Hirst having an absolute mare here. NOTHING sticking (n/t) on 22:29 - Sep 27 by MVBlue

Not for me. One thing I really appreciated was Hirsts hold up play today. Really shone a n that keeping the ball as an outlet, very strong on that aspect today. I would pair him with an out an out goal scorer. But in the flesh today, I was impressed. Azon different, and didn't take his chance, just wide. Not a hold up player..

Funny how footy opinions differ I felt azon held the ball up better than hirst. The ball was bouncing off Hirst all afternoon. But Hirst was solid at pressing, passing well when he did have the ball.

Thought Azon looked quite sharp when he came on.. He looks like a right scrapper, which I like in a player. Albeit he came on against tiring defenders...
Hirst gets a bit of stick for ball control, sometimes.... Way I see it, he receives the ball, quite often with his back to goal , and a 6foot 4, hairy arsed CB nudging him about.. (Sometimes 2 of them )...
He put a lovely flicked header through, I think it was the Szmodics chance..

Pleased that we've got Azon here as well, now, though. As AAH was a definite drop off in class.. Azon looks like he can play on the shoulder of defenders more so than Hirst, imo.

For all the armchair managers on here knocking Hirst. I bet you any money, the CB's he plays against will be telling them that Hirst is a real handful to play against.
Not to mention, he has 3 goals in 6 games. A good return for any Champ' striker.

I think Hirst is under appreciated by some. I do agree that his touch looks very heavy, but you cannot deny the work rate is probably the highest in the team in terms of speed pressing and distance covered. If you work that hard, you’re going to have heavy legs for that first touch.

I thought he did really well. He’s a great outlet.

Szmodics too was everywhere, perhaps a little too much, but those two in particular work very hard.

Thought he was awful apart from the tap in. Worked hard but didn't do anything (apart from the winning goal)

While it was a simple finish he timed his run really well to get ahead of the defenders - he left his little burst of speed to meet Leif's cross to the last second and the CBs didn't go with him.

We'll see plenty of similar crosses in games at all levels this season where the striker either goes too early and the CBs go with him or leaves it too late and the ball flashes right the way across the box.

Hirst was closely and heavily marked and he initially had a touch of the Teflon’s about him. But his movement was good and I thought he grew into the game. Yes, he got a tap in, but you have to be there to get those and a nifty bit of footwork saw to that.

He’s a good, clever player. He’s not in the best of form at the moment but he’s fine and Portsmouth defenders knew they’d been in a game.

Szmodics had a right little war going on with his markers. I’m not sure whether he’s making the best choices at times or is the right partner for Hirst (or visa versa), but he’s fine and works hard. If he can stay free of injury, there’s a lot more to come from him.

Tbh he had a solid game

The issue was again tho he had a chance a quality striker scores and he fluffed it.

Thankfully davis put one on a plate for him to make up for it. But it's those misses that we really can't have from him when it comes to tighter games.

But his overall game was fine.

Not really anything to understand with that flash. Balls through the davis hirst moves into the one place a striker should move into in that situation. Davis plays the ball across and hirst taps it home. We saw al hamadi do similar when he first joined. I think its reaching tbh to say it's a quality timed run. It's the least you'd expect tbh. Imo of course

Disagree - if you watch it back. He times his burst of pace just right - go to early and the CB reacts and covers. Go to late and it flashes across the box. There will be plenty of chances for lot of teams this season where the attacker doesn't get it right. It's a real skill in itself.

Will be one to agree to disagree one for me. If your playing as the striker in this side then thats a bare minimum requirement in that situation.

BTW. I don't want it to come across as saying hirst had a bad game BTW. He didn't. It's just in each game so far he's missed golden opportunities that we really need him to convert. That earlier opportunity from Sammy was on a plate too

"He worked hard but didn't do anything"..?

His hard work is underrated, imo..

So many people dont seem to understand his role in the team do they. Its a different fireard line, but Hirst is the one thst gayest it altogether. He dies literally work his self into the ground. Whilst his ability to keep hold of the ball under pressure ( usually occupying teo defenders), has been up to his usual standards, his ability to bring others into the attacking moment shouldn't be underestimated. I dont think we have another striker at the club that can play that role. But yes, I hope he can more goals for himself. If there's one criticism of him, its that he doesnt look for that goal first and foremost, (unlike Philogene ) as an example, but always looks to lay the ball off or knock it on.

Getting into the right vicinity is one thing, the small movements to lose the marker is another. It’s very much a skill that some strikers do better than others. You look at Haaland. Monster bloke, awesome player, but a lot of his goals come from those small, clever movements. .

The trick is of course the delivery which Davis did perfectly on that occasion, but on the other occasions we got in that position, Hirst was in the vicinity.

No I'm demonstrating that I have a different opinion than you, I could say you don't understand that it's just a basic run any striker should do but I accept you have your own opinion on it. Its one to agree to disagree on.

There are 3 or 4 others in this thread talking about the quality, speed and timing of his run, and that it it's NOT "just a basic run any striker should do". But yes, we will have to agree to disagree that it wasn't just "on a plate".

I feel with Sammy he just needs that 1 goal to kick-start his season.

He worked his bullox off today and got in some great positions too. He could and should have had an assist with hirst and a goal to his name today.

I don't think he had a poor performance far from it. He just isn't hitting his Blackburn heights.

absolutely agree…not a lot came of for him but he put a shift in..almost Kuqi esk …as far as aggression and effort goes…

He had a couple of poor moments first half where the ball went up to him and he tried to do too much and lost possession, one of those moments led to the one on one where Palmer got us out of jail. After that though he was very good, think the goal settled him down and his link up play second half was really good. Even first half, his workrate was a big part of our play, leading the press and making room for others through his running and movement. He'll carry on leading the line for now but Azon looks sharp and is providing some very handy competition for the starting striker slot.

He was fantastic today, anyone who thinks he had a bad game really doesn’t understand football…it’s not all about flashy skills and dribbles!!!!

Why when we’ve had a good performance, good win, do we have to find somebody to criticise?

The CBs for Pompey would certainly tell they’d been in a match….plus 3 goals in 6 matches (however the come) is a good start for him! McKenna will be more than happy!
