A decent win made harder 16:54 - Sep 27 with 2615 viewsMullet

Thought we played really well at times, but that late goal was a reminder how sloppy and complacent we can get. Some of the times we have the ball away in the first half, combined with giving them a free header in stoppage time take a little shine off it for me.

Was hoping we’d really put them to the sword when we scored early as some of our play was superb. Maybe I’m nitpicking, maybe I’m entitled but I’d hope we shit teams out all season and not risk dropping points in future weeks.

Shut obviously….

Good win but again felt like we didn’t have control for periods, also conceded which if it was 10 mins earlier could have been painful.

Matusiwa, Leif, Jayden, all excellent

The only Muff in Town.

We won't control all games for 90 minutes.

Today I'd say pompy had 10 minutes there they had the the ball. 80 minutes of ipswich is perfectly fine.

I thought we were sloppy for the whole game Mullet. They were poor first half and when Matusiwa, Philogene, Davis and Cajuste picked up the pace, we looked OK. Szmodics is lost as a 10. Not enough guile. We won, looked decent in patches but the better teams will punish us for sloppy work in possession. A win is what matters but there is much work to be done.

I think that's very harsh.

We controlled the first half, CM looked great as did the left side. Kipre and O'Shea were good.

It's definite progress towards a more McKennaball team, don't think the negativity is that warranted given it's clearly a work in progress.

I'm quite surprised by some of the thoughts SB

Guess the sheff utd game makes any normal win look bad in comparison.

Finished article no but that was a solid performance imo.

We were excellent and dominant until the quad substitutions. Important to not believe the smell of our own farts until we actually doing well.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Not sure I agree it was that bad, but there were times where we put passes short, missed obvious chances to score or put someone through. Against someone not as terrible it might have cost us a win I guess.

I don’t think you’re nitpicking that’s exactly how we can lose points. Kind of game after we go 2 up I’d expect us to completely roll them but there we are with the ball bouncing around in injury time. Teams much better than us last year were doing that to us and we haven’t found it yet.

Win is a win though and we were destroying them down the left first half. Would like to see us be more clinical and less sloppy

Odd, because I thought we were looking shaky before the subs and regained the advantage after them. The late goal was awful defending.

Bit harsh. Thought very good first half.

Did think we got sloppy and lost control for a period in tbe second half. Pompey not good enough to punish us. Was Kieran too slow to bring on the subs?

Cajuste was fantastic in tbe first 20 mins. Outstanding. But he goes missing, too often. Not sure hes got the engine. Matusiwa is a true 90 minute player,

I thought Szmodics was lively, but where's the goalscorer?

Good win. Great. But I think we treated like a training match. Not wanting to be too critical becuase we have got the 3 points, but at times far too casual today, ending g in their goal when they should really have been nowhere near us.

On to Bristol Tues now and frankly another 3 points are needed.

We were fine imo until the 60th minute again. That's where I always feel cajuste needs to come off. We started to lose the midfield a bit.

Nunez I think KM is gonna have to manage he can't come in thinking it's a show each game. Got to be sensible with it.

Seems we took our foot off the gas in the second half a bit but still had chances we should’ve scored but I wonder if it was tactical not to push ourselves so much with 3 games in a week.

I thought we were mostly in control, but sloppy in a few situations. Which is fine, whilst we get used to each others game the wins are 100% the most important thing.

Like McK said pregame, our home record in the promotion season was not all 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 but coming out on top by the odd goal.

For a single goal win, this was as comfortable as it gets really.

Yes, I agree with you on that. I wish McKenna had make the subs slightly earlier. Nunez was slightly frustrating with the showboating but others suffered from not even being able to do the basics at times. We were casual and sloppy at times; the key for us now seems to be retaining focus.

I agree, we controlled and won the first half but Mousinho looked to have reset Pompey for the second half and they edged it to win that forty five.

By the time the substitutions were made you could see Hirst and Cajuste were running out of steam and Pompey's half time reset had blunted Philogene a little. Wasse Egeli was looking more threatening but the booking made him a bit of a liability. The later substitutions may have upset our rhythm too.

Cajuste on the ball looks majestic, all we hoped for, off the ball we look average, often large gaps found by opposition and slow movement giving us limited options to play out.

I think some of the 2nd half is due to the mindset of scoring just before the break, and probably thinking the game is as good as won and the half time talk changing last minute etc.

So we were content to coast through the 2nd half. 1st half is as good as we've played all season Inc Sheff Utd for me, signs that McKenna ball is taking shape and understandings are starting to be formed.

5.5/10 for me but still good enough to control the game against a mid table team.
Will definitely need to up our game against better opposition or away from home but we're slowly getting there

Why not

Because it doesn't really happen. They'll be times where we regroup, catch our breath and retreat. As we did at times today.

We pressed high at times. And some times allowed them time with the ball too.

We have a squad worth £150m with multiple players over £10m we absolutely should be in control at home against Portsmouth for 95% of the match not 60%
