VAR denying as clear cut a penalty as I've ever seen.

No doubt Pope got a touch but I don’t really understand why that means it’s not a foul. Can’t it be true that he touched the ball and also wiper out Gyokeres?

After one view, I'd have agreed, but after a replay you can see Pope did touch it, so I've got sympathy with the ref on that one to be honest. Damned either way he decided, really.

Pope didn't play the ball though it deflected off him after the attackers touch.

The ref has basically said it the ball bobbled up and went over popes foot then that would have been a Pen.

It's this kind of granular analysis that is ruining football in my opinion. Any other league that's a penalty 99 times out of 100.

Gyokores played it onto pope, the keeper still took him out. I though the check was going to be about whether if there was the suggestion of a touch by pope that meant it would save him from a sending off, which I would agree wasn’t merited.

If outfield players can do that with a tackle and it be deemed fair, i.e the classic 'man and ball' then why can't a keeper?

I'm on the fence. The striker plays it against Pope, rather than Pope actively tackling the ball, he goes running after the ball and then Pope collides with him, so in that sense it's two separate things. But I can see why someone might view it differently.

Overall the fewer penalties the better in my opinion, so I'm glad it wasn't given. It will be debated to death sadly but there isn't a right or wrong answer every time.

Surely there's a reasonable likelihood that a challenge from an opposition player (in this case Pope) will result in a touch from them on the ball after it's played onto them by the attacking player. In which case, does that touch never mean it's a successful challenge then? Does it have to be a conscious touch? Could a defender go into a challenge with a reasonable expectation that they're going to get something onto it without knowing exactly what that is (hope that makes sense)? I'm not saying you're wrong by the way. It's just not clear cut in my opinion.

Take your point but I don’t think they can tbh, anywhere else on the pitch and that’s a foul.

Another VAR farce though, clear and obvious my hoop. He watched it 30 times and still didn’t look like he was any the wiser.

If its ball first and not excessive force, its generally fine. Though one might draw a distinction between incidents where the player falls over a tackler after the ball has been won, and one where the tackler gets the ball and then clobbers the man as well.

Seen it now. Not a foul. Gets a toe on the ball before contact with the man which comes as a natural consequence of that touch (rather than taking him out intnetionally afterwards). Not sure what the argument is really.

Baffling it wasn’t given. Getting a touch on it doesn’t seem to prevent it being a foul either these days so it’s completely subjective. Given King got booked in the Villa game and was in less control of the ball etc it seems odd.

Not a penalty for me, keeper allowed to go for the ball, gets the ball, barely much contact made with the player as hes trying not to, and that's Arsenal players rolling around theatrically again, quelle surprise.

The way people were talking about it sounded like the goalie had just run out body checked their player and got just a toe on the ball to save him

Pope has been an utter tool for Newcastle..standsby to watch 1st goal go in ...gives away the ball for the corner for second.and comes out amongst a group of of bigger players to try and fist away the ball instead of staying on his line..a complete tool !!

That's a bit harsh, made a couple of excellent saves from Eze, I'm guessing you had a couple of quid on Newcastle!

His knee took him out, yes he made a meal of it but very clear contact. Pope touching the ball is irrelevant, striker would have got to it for a chance on goal.

Very clear pen for me, an atrocious decision

Clear and obvious is a myth, it doesn't work. A referee should not be having to judge whether something is 'clear and obvious' enough to overturn a decision he has already made in real time. He will generally judge it on merit, and rightly so. We're asking officials to referee the game and then be their own evaluator all in one go. It's nonsense, just like the whole idea of VAR itself. Always has been, was always going to be and always will be.

For the amount he was diving around trying to win fouls it's the right thing he didn't get that penalty, whether Pope touched the ball or not.

Since when is it a foul when you get the ball?

Arsenal’s winner should never have stood! Pope was impeded as he took a kick out, from which Arsenal won the corner they scored from. Pope was protesting to the ref when it happened - cannot understand why VAR did not review it?

The handball that wasn't given looked identical to the one given against Leif in the Derby game to me.

But nothing about any of this makes sense to me any more.

100%. Handball has become a nonsense with VAR, ridiculous reasoning for decisions. If that went against us, I’d be fuming.

Pope touched the ball (luckily or not) before he touched the player. Someone earlier said he didn't play the ball... course he did, he touched it.

On first viewing looked a certain penalty but getting a touch before the player is a great tackle and is exactly why VAR is brought in.
