Its NOT POSSIBLE to to win , draw or lose when you are physically not in the same division.
Town and narwich have been in the same division over the past 16 years on just FIVE occasions!
eg :
Ipswich Town and Norwich City were in the same division during the 2023-24 season, and the period from the 2019-20 season to the 2022-23 season, inclusive, making them
2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023: These were the seasons Ipswich Town and Norwich City were in the same division...
We therefore did not beat them in those 5 years ... they I think, only beat us twice in that period , and we drew the remaining games. So it would be more accurate of them to claim weve not beaten them in a five years period between 2019-2024....

I’m afraid I don’t follow any of this at all.
We last beat them in April 2009. One of the Gio dos Santos games. 3-2.
Since then, we’ve played them 14 times without winning. That includes 4 games in 2014/15, when they beat us in the playoff semi-finals.
The years when we’ve been in the same division were the following:
2010/11
2014/15
2016/17
2017/18
2018/19
2023/24
[plus this season: 2025/26]
So in the infamous 16 year period, we’ve completed 6 seasons against them, one of which contained 2 additional games against them in the playoffs. 14 games: 8 losses, 6 draws.
I don’t follow what you say about 2019/20 to 2022/23, as we weren’t in the same division at that time, whereas you seem to say we were. Why would it be more accurate to claim we’ve not beaten them in a 5 year period between 2019-2024 when we played them in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and didn’t win on any of those occasions?
I’m pretty sure we’d be crowing just like them if the roles were reversed. 14 failures in a row is a lot. But let's beat them this weekend and shut them up. |

They’re too stupid to realise that 14 matches unbeaten in the derby is far more irrefutable and damning than 16 years is. There’s plenty to criticise the Ipswich Town of the 2010s and early 2020s for, but failing to win matches that weren’t played is a bit excessive.
14 matches - and who knows, that could rise to 15 on Sunday - is a record that will possibly never be beaten. What’s worse is that with the exception of the brief window of opportunity that we couldn’t grasp in February 2018 and the hatful of missed chances that cost us in December 2023, we’ve not looked like beating them in the majority of those 14 matches.
It's been enough to make you lose your belief in the unpredictability of football - Norwich were better than us in the 2010s, and if they were on it they won, and if they weren’t it was generally because they missed too many chances, barring the one that gained them a point. The 2010s are the only decade of the fixture (so far) in which Town didn’t manage a derby win, and without going full Mach, that’s something I really resent those Town sides for. February 2018 summed up the decade perfectly - see out 5 minutes of football and you’ll have something you’ll be cherished forever for.
“What? You want us to achieve something? Nope, can’t do that I’m afraid.” It felt like their desire not to lose it trumped our desire to win it. It was certainly a moment where the Marcus Evans ethos of You Cannot Have Nice Things slapped us squarely in the face to go alongside all the bumps and bruises we’d had to take in cup games and other derbies.
I hope we do it on Sunday, just to get the final vestige of the Banter Era off our backs, and also to see whether defeat to us really does tip Norwich into the crisis their fans and media fear it will. That’s a key difference to bear in mind. If we fail to win or lose, I expect our squad and club to offer their regrets, but bounce back as they keep trying to build their identity. I think it's a bit tinpot to put all sorts of asterisks around the 16 years, it is after all a fact and includes a good number of games. Ipswich and Norwich have been largely in similar divisions, mainly the 2nd one with a smattering of 1st and 3rd divisions for both sides. It's hardly like Tranmere claiming Liverpool haven't beaten then for 20 years is it.

Although, to be fair, the first and last of those 16 years saw us a division above them as well.
It is rubbish that we haven't beaten them for 16 years and something we really do need to put right. However, it would also be about right if they drew both games with us this season, got relegated, we got promoted and they kept on counting the years of their record. |  |

Let's be honest, if we were 16 years unbeaten against them, we'd be mentioning it as much as they are. It's a rivalry, it doesn't matter what league either team is in, what happens between the 2 teams in each game matters.
McKenna mentioned the fact their fans were celebrating a draw last time we played them at PR, but if that was us, we'd be doing the same thing, purely based on the run continuing. That's all they have over us at the moment. | |
