Walle-Egeli offers more than McAteer 14:57 - Oct 5 with 3956 viewscbower

Not a criticism of McAteer. Maybe away from home, Kasey might offer a more solid defensive contribution. There will be plenty of minutes for both with Wes in that equation post Christmas too.

Stand by my thoughts the other day. For egeli to develop he's simply got to play. He has the tools but he needs games to grow confidence to make the most of that talent. Some of his quick over the top balls were chapperesque and something we've missed.

Agreed. I thought he looked good today and will get better and better.

Word. There was a round the corner, over the top ball from the half way line for Szmodics, which was a Conor Chaplin pass. Th elad has really good vision and composure and I couldn't care less if he has a lot of blocked shots if he keeps playing like that and growing into the league.

He was quiet and the occasion was understandably a big one for him really have the freedom to excel. But again there were moments of absolute quality from him. Ball over and around the corner to Szmodics was effortless and class. His weight of pass is outstanding. First half cross when two men on him as well. And if course the little flick.

He is very much all about finding a chance to shoot and picks the wrong option sometimes but you have to love his confidence and desire to make things happen.

There is a real player there. A lot to work on but great ingredients.

I have no idea why we've bought McAteer in the first place. AND paid , what? £12m for him? Ludicrous.

I think McAteer was a bit of a panic buy in all honesty. Ogbene hadn't looked up to speed, Burns still out, Clarke looking ok but not great on the right, and the Egeli transfer looked to have stalled. We needed someone who was fit and ready to go, and we overpaid for it.

Came here to say just this. His physical presence is a bonus and he has a raw confidence and skill which McKenna will surely coach into something special. His positivity is in stark contrast to McAteer for me. He does struggle with decision making though, a sign of inexperience.

MacAteer will be fine when we start getting some patterns together that gets him behind his full back. He's got pace, work rate and bit of bite. Not to criticize Egeli but those are three traits I wouldn't give him yet. The two of them could be a lovely little double act to interchange as needed, with Buns to join in when fit too.

Well, yes. That would make more sense, because i honestly dont see him featuring much as a first choice.

On a different players, can anyone see Town bringing Morsy back in January, and selling Taylor?

Yes, Walle is a player of big potential. Some of his decision making is poor & he's sometimes on a different wavelength from the rest of the attack, but this will come with time & right for him to keep starting.
Is Kipre now in our first XI instead of Greaves? I thought O'Shea didn't have a great game today, especially in the first half.

McAteer is more defensive, and recycles the ball well. Town concede more down the right so guess he will be used more away from home to try and plug that.

O'Shea was fine defensively but struggled to put us on the front foot, and gave them chances where there should have been none. He did settle more when playing it long.

I agree with Walle - the potentail and talent is there; he just needs to sharpen his decision making.

That would be true if Egeli had been through the door but he wasnt at that point. It would have been worse if we ended the window with neither of them

No.

Why would we do that and why would Morsy agree to the tax hit?

They’ll both play plenty of football this season. Wouldn’t surprise me come the end of the season if they’ve started a similar amount of games as each other, with plenty of appearances off the bench as well.

Can you really see no reason why we signed him? Honestly the second part clouds the first part. main issue is just that we have paid about £7-8 million too much. We should not let that mean he gets unfair rap from us fans but it really is a strange and crazy fee.

The good thing with Mcateer is his age and if he can progress and narrow the gap to that fee then great.

On the face of it I would have preferred to keep ogbene but seems clear and I'm sure with all the data that ogbene Was well off it.

I agree with that. Basically, his potential is far higher and I’d play Egeli as much as possible. He’s an exciting prospect for one so young.

But I still think McAteer will have a role to play and will be an asset to us.

This is it. People need to forget the price tag, we bought off a promotion rival in a red hot market. We probably paid £5m too much which I thought since day 1, but it doesn’t make him a bad player. He’s workmanlike, experienced at this level and the one above, international, 23/24 years old, good physical player and fit as a butchers dog who will run all day. He isn’t the sexy winger that’s capable of what Philogene can do or much of a ball carrier, he’s more a water carrier and will play a role especially while Egeli is so raw. He’s just a £6m player we paid too much money for IMO.

Should both play a key role in this seasons promotion, Egeli will definitely be the better player, confidence wise In the 2nd half was much better taking long range shots, just needs the confidence to run at players now

That is true but we hadn't bought Egeli when we signed McAteer. If we had, we wouldn't have signed McAteer and Ogbene would likely still be on our books.

Agreed. We’d have been very short without another body if Egeli had not come in. Even with Egeli we need the numbers to be able to provide the depth. We’re paying over the odds but it gets deals the done.

I'm glad we have both. Egeli has only recently turned 19 and is playing in one of the most physically demanding leagues in the world for the first time. McAteer's energy and effort so far can't be faulted and at the very least he provides a good quality alternative option or backup. He's young enough that he may well improve under McKenna. And if his transfer fee turns out to have been too high (IMO it's too early to properly judge that), that wouldn't be his fault.

Yep McAteer actually does a brilliant job of stopping attacks down our left hand side. Defensively he is good and he reads the game well
