Midfield for Boro 06:25 - Oct 14 with 2749 viewsLen_Brennan

I wonder if McKenna might consider starting Nunez alongside Matusiwa for the Boro game on Friday. Hackney & Morris have been getting plenty of plaudits for how good a partnership they are, so maybe the extra bite of Nunez in there from the start may be worth considering for this one.
The other advantage of that call would be to free up Cajuste as a possible starter in the central #10 role, where he could drop deep when required. With Szmodics reportedly in a boot this week (Blue Monday), having missed 2 World Cup qualifiers for Ireland, he certainly won't be available to start, & Akpom yet to establish himself as a starter in that role, it may be a good chance to look at Cajuste, who has touch, ball carrying ability & vision to be very effective as the link between midfield & the centre forward. Akpom can come on after 60/65 minutes, while Taylor, fresh from signing his new contract, will be looking for some match time he's unlikely to get otherwise.

Cajuste isn't a 10 so that definitely won't happen IMO.

I expect he will keep Cajuste in and rotate Nunez as the starter for midweek games now they will be coming thick and fast. Also probably more sense to have Nunez start in the home game.

I can see what you mean with Cajuste's ball-carrying ability being a serious threat further forward, but I don't think he could high press in the way we need our 10 to, not for 60 minutes anyway.

When Hirst is closing down a centre back with the ball I can't see Cajuste doing the longest chase repeatedly closing down the other centre back like Szmodics does, whilst Billy and Sandra are closing down the fullbacks.

Nunez isn't anymore likely to tackle than Cajuste. Nunez is a ball playing CM, like Cajuste.

If you want more 'bite', Taylor is the better option.

I strongly disagree. Cajuste has the ability to bring others in to play with his vision. He does not just have to run around and chase down balls when IN possession.

Plus he played #'10 for Napoli which is a good start.

In saying this there are so many good players for each position it is a win win for most of the parts.

I can see similar changes like to Bristol City away game.

Palmer
Furlong O’Shea Greaves Davis
Matusiwa Nunez
McAteer Akpom Clarke

When was the last time McKenna played a player in an unexpected position?

He often changes the way we play, the specific players, or their responsibilities.

But playing a player out-of-position (other than covering for injury)?

I can’t think of a single example, although there are probably some/several.

If Szmodics isn't available, I'd be more interested in putting Humphreys in that position (probably as the sub, with Akpom starting). He has played an advanced attacking midfielder role before - and scored.

Keep the Cajuste/Nunez setup as it is.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I hope not.

Boro away will be one of our toughest games of the season. Play the same team as last game unless there are injuries. Rotate vs Charlton.

Interesting isn’t it?

Many of the great managers of yesteryear were famous for looking at a striker and thinking they’d make good full backs (or whatever). Seems to happen less and less these days and with McKenna - as far as I can recall - basically never.

Generally done at a younger age. It's actually part of player development now (much more than it used to be), as youngsters, players don't have 'positions' as such, as they move through the age groups, they typically have two positions but eventually settle on one main one.

Take Ashley Cole - was a striker/ winger initially, up until teens and then moved to full back during his youth phase.

Don't agree with the idea of Cajuste at 10. His biggest strength is carrying the ball from deep

But that tended to be at a time when squads weren’t as big. And so out of necessity a midfielder had to play up front etc. In the lower leagues, it probably still happens all of the time.

Agree, it's going to be tough. They've only conceded 1 goal at home, but then have only scored 4.

And we have only scored 2 away.

Can't see it being a high scoring game!

Makes sense.

Hence why I generally dismiss “play player A in position B” suggestions these days.

Hutchinson as a 10 when he'd always been an inverted forward
Sammy s on the left
Johnson as a winger
Akpom as a 10
Harry C as a cm. ( was unexpected lol)
Wolfy as a rb
Greaves as a lb

Obv reasons behind them all but they're the ones i can think of

a niche perspective

Cajuste and Azor for me....

Nunez done a bit of travelling and been away from his Town team mates for most of the break..

Think a lot of KM's Bristol selection, had the Nodge game, at home, in mind. And it definitely paid off...

This time though. I think we'll go strong at Boro'... Beat them and we sit 3rd in the league.
So square pegs in square holes for me. No tinkering with our midfield.

I'm not reading much into Szmodivs protective boot either... Might just be on show to satisfy FAI. After he dropped out of their squad..?

I'm really hoping for 3pts.. Before the "not winning away", becomes a thing.

We haven't gone flat out yet.. Lots of players srtill to peak... But we are improving week on week. We are looking good... If current form players can keep it going. And the likes of Nunez, Hirst, Azon, Akpom , Egelli, can step up a notch. It's going to be beautiful...

We bought Taylor as an attacking midfielder and sometimes use him as a 10. Just because he lacks the silky skills of Nunez and Cajuste doesn't make him a better tackler.

Nunez has more bite than Cajuste? I think you're the first person I've seen suggest that.

Matusiwa and Cajuste are our powerhouse pairing. The only way we win the midfield battle up there is if these two walk all over Hackney and Morris.

Of allll the games this season, this is probably one I'd say least suits Nunez!
