Yes was the pools. You would pick 10 games looking to get 8 score draws.

This was very popular prior to the launch of the lottery.

From memory 3 points for a score draws, 2 points for a non score draw, 1.5 points for an away win and 1 point for a home win. Think the jackpot was 24 points, 8 games with 3 points. But if there wasn’t 8 score draws, money was paid to the highest points tally?

That’s my recollection, might be slightly wrong?

I think you're about right there.

I recall that Grandstand would issue a 'Pools Forecast' at the end of the classified results, often alongside a minimum points threshold for participants to submit their claims.

Halcyon days.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

The Grandstand classified results allowed you to check off your pools coupon at the same time.

I remember "the pools panel" would decide what the result would've been for abandoned/postponed games... and it would annoy me if Town were involved and not given a favourable decision! I can't remember if I genuinely thought it counted as a result, but I was very young at the time.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

The pools and Spot the Ball coupons. Massively popular at the time, reaching millions of households. I am convinced Spot the Ball was a scam, though and the money from that was used to cover Pools winners.

The BBC seemed obsessed with the number of score draws and the pools coupon in those days. Maybe that's what many people who tuned into Grandstand for, but I thought it distracted from the excitement of the football results, which was never quite the same after the teleprinter was replaced by the videoprinter.

It was a scam. For some copyright reason or other they weren’t allowed to just put the ball back from where it was erased, it had to be predicted by a panel of experts.

I remember us getting two wins on the same day once...

We had a game postponed because of snow on the pitch. Which The Pools Forecast gave as an Ipswich win.
But we travelled to Coventry I think, to play them instead. And we won that one.
Around 1982'ish... Proper Winters back then.

The Pools, a very, very, popular form of football betting in the 60s/70s especially with 'Grannies'. Nothing wrong with football betting.

My grandad used to do the pools religiously. Which is a bid weird as he wasn’t much of a football man (I don’t think he had a team and if he did he never mentioned it) and he wasn’t a betting man either. Plus they were skint. It just seemed like something to do that was very popular.

They gave some strange verdicts. Someone did a study of the actual results when the game was played and the panel verdict was about 25 perc accurate. Worse than the random control they compared it with.

Depends on your view point - maybe Towen would have won a few more trophies in the Robson years if Liverpool hadn't been funded by Pools' money ?

I remember the "pools man" knocking on the door weekly. My dad did the pools and STB religiously but oddly he had no interest in football whatsoever.
When I worked in a factory in the early 90s we had a "pools man" too.
I thought the pools had long since finished, so it's great to hear it's still a thing.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

The pools?

I used to do it, was run by 'Vernons' IIRC?
My old man did it before me, used to have all the numbers cut out on cardboard squares that he had hand written and kept them in a 'Cafe Creme' tin, which were tiny cigars.

Would do two lines, one which he tried to deduce and one for us kids, that we would randomly pick ten numbers from the cardboard squares.
