| I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we don’t go up this season. 16:48 - Nov 5 with 3530 views | Matt_Netherlands | Anyone else? Obviously I want us to play at the highest level possible, but having tasted a bit of the PL last season I really do think what people said about “the journey is better than the destination” is so very true. Plus, if we go up we’ll need a massive squad overhaul and w know how that turned out last time…. | | | | |

If we go up this season it will because we have started to get the best out of the current squad who should then be ready for the Premier League. If we could sign 2-3 very good players to add quality that should be better than starting again. Of course, identifying and getting over the line those players would be the challenge.

| I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we don’t go up this season. on 18:42 - Nov 5 by MattinLondon | Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton have probably only spent a small fraction of their existence in the top flight but the eyes are established there now. History like that means nothing. |
It was more of a philosophical post, really. Who are we? Why are we here?

26 years in the top flight in 90 years. 29%. I was curious myself.
| I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we don’t go up this season. on 21:08 - Nov 5 with 612 views | TripSwitch | Can understand your reasoning but there are hard business truths that come into it. As others have said, we've been given a huge advantage by the double promotions and instead of banking it ambitiously spent loads of money last season and this with the clear aim of becoming established as a PL club or at very least a yo yo club. With increased ambition comes increased risk and there are expectations of return on investment from our owners. Spending that money with nothing to show for it - IE back into the shuffle in the championship, spells a world of pain for the club in the seasons ahead - potential problems with PSR, investors walking away, needing to asset strip etc, for the long term good of Town it's important we get promoted this season. The pressure is very much on McKenna and Ashton to perform and meet the expectation. [Post edited 5 Nov 2025 21:11]

| I wouldn’t be too disappointed if we don’t go up this season. on 18:55 - Nov 5 by ITFCSG | Transfermarkt Total squad value Ipswich 198.35 million EUR Southampton 188.5 million EUR Leicester 168.75 million EUR We signed a LOT more than both Leicester and Saints both perm and loans over the summer so I am not surprised |
that's not the most expensive squad, it's the highest value. for instance leif davis' "market value" is 22m, but he wasn't that expensive at 1m. best squad is arguable, but i don't see that as showing that it's the most expensive!

we haven't spent that much though have we? don't remember us dropping 22m on davis or 8m on johnson

My goodness we would need more than 3 players. It would be another significant turnover and rightly so. We would be looking at 2 new centre halves, 2 new central midfielders, 2 new strikers, new goalkeeper, new right back, 2 new wingers. That Is taking in to account these players improving to a level to get us up. The jump is absolutely huge we saw that. What this current squad would give you is a better bench and more chance to be competitive late on in games.

The championship is an amazing league in terms of how competitive it is, but I fail to believe anyone actually enjoys watching this. Teams coming to PR whacking 10 men behind the ball with no intent to play. Ball in play for about 50 minutes. It is a grim watch.

I get the point around journey and destination but this is our time. It is our time to take advantage or the unexpected windfall and maximise the benefits. If we could look forwards and in 5 years we are established but it took 2-3 yoyo seasons so what. Its a problem when it doesnt happen this season because money pressure builds from there.

You'd hope the turnover wouldn't be so wild and you'd have a good core to build on But who really knows

Huh.... no-one is saying we don't go for promotion. We all want to get in top six, top 2.... but many are saying we don't enjoy the reward. And if we don't get promoted... then i guess we'll have a decent next prize of the Championship ( Albeit with the uncertainty that will go with it). The world will still turn.

Cajuste, Kipre, Akpon all had clauses to buy them dependent on promotion, didn't they? Not sure about Azon. Young presumably won't do another season. Would Leif want to stick around for another year in the championship? Plus Burns, Townsend, H Clarke, Humphreys all in last year of contract and I can't imagine too many of those staying edit - Walton and Button also in last year of contracts [Post edited 5 Nov 2025 17:01]

All that sounds like staying down would be an excellent opportunity to offload loan players who aren't quite EPL standard before being committed to buying them.

But from a fan point of view, I prefer the hustle and bustle of the Championship. Watching Halland et al turn up at PR and smash 6 past us doesn't really whet the appetite.
