Morsy's Plans 11:06 - Nov 11 with 5967 viewsLA_Tractor_Boy

Has anyone heard any whispers about Sam Morsy's plans for the future.

As he's been released by Kuwait SC, I assume he must be training somewhere if he plans to join a club in January. Or maybe he's got his feet up somewhere and has semi-retired.

Obviously most would love to see him back here in January, but surely it can't/won't happen if he's not trained or been on the hobnobs for 4 months.

Gav has been on the Hobnobs for 20 years and he hasn't retired.

I’ve no idea what he’s up to but I find it really strange that he seemingly hasn’t been to any of our games. I would have thought he’d have been back and on the pitch at half time for a ‘proper send off’ at some point if there was no chance of him returning.

I would suggest that the lack of a send off hints more towards the fact that there's no chance of a return.

Apart from a sentimental attachment to a good player and top Captain from the past, I'm not sure why people are so desperate to see Morsy return to Ipswich.

Things are now coming together in the new-look midfield, with younger players (notably Matusiwa, Taylor and Nunez) growing into their roles. Where does he fit, except as a reserve in case of injury crisis? What of O'Shea's development as Captain?

I know John Wark kept coming back, even into his late 30s, but he was among the greatest of all time, at the very top level. Much as I loved Morsy, he isn't that. Plus Wark was able to play in a number of positions, so had that useful flexibility to fill in.

Yes, McKenna has said he'd love Morsy to have stayed. But it didn't happen, so the club has been forced to move on. Players have been hired, structures rearranged, turning the clock back requires a complicated reset. And what of next season? Morsy will turn 35, won't have become more mobile, be even more vulnerable to the issues in the Prem (should we get there) which fans were grumbling about last time. Should we freeze out the future for a hopeful attempt to rerun the past?

Yeah, totally agree.

I’d also imagine Morsy would have similar feelings too.

I think you're probably right, and that's no slight on The Egyptian King, who is one of my all time favourite players.

I'd love to see him back for a proper send off at some point though.

If Kieran did decide it would be good on balance to have him back it would be a really fantastic homecoming, but I guess you're right overall.

Would be amazed if he's back in UK before April.

If he is, his advisors need stringing up!

I *think* he could become resident again late in January, and avoid being considered a UK resident for overseas earnings during 25/26. As I understand it he was resident in the UK for about 100 days at the beginning of the tax year, and he needs to keep that below 183 days so as to not be considered as a UK resident for HMRC overseas taxation purposes.

I'm pretty certain he'll be taking advice on this - if anyone got it wrong, it could be at huge personal cost to Morsy.

I worked for HMRC!!! Ok, ok I was a project dude that had nothing to do with the tax inspector people. But I know plenty of them so I am open to silence money, bribes, a Christmas Box, a little ……consideration. Only fair…..

I’m sure our former Captain and terrific player is being well advised.

Bit more nuanced than that because for the split year treatment I think he has restrictions on how many days he can work once he returns (probably max 30). And the number of UK "ties" also means he may not qualify for the full 183 days if he owns a house here etc etc.

So, potentially, he could come back but don't think he could play again until after April 6th (and arguably couldn't even train in the UK before that either).

The above just goes to show what a ludicrously complicated system we have. We should just move to flat tax arrangement like Italy where people can pay 250k-500k pa and then just come and go as they want.

Much simpler and probably more lucrative.

His wife posted on Instagram that she was back and based in Wolverhampton, whether that means he’s back as well remains to be seen though.

Perhaps he’s just going to take the hit?

I did!

Well, a lot of the time I as working on cross Govt stuff and they just did my pay and rations. Most of the rest was to do with implementing measures (budget related projects), some security and Business continuity stuff and health and safety along with a few other things. That is my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

In any case, I am more than happy to dob in people to my chums that do work on tax, because that’s the kind of swine I am. Booooooo!

Not sure if you have any "moles" still there so to speak but what we keep hearing from PwC and the like is that HMRC are investing massively into AI at the moment with the view to monitoring people who push the envelope with regards to day counts etc?

Nope, irrelevant, to qualify for non-residency you still have to have a 'full time contract of employment abroad' the full time 35 hours a week during his time is not going to cut it, plus spend less than 91 days in the UK.

Unless he's got something else out there and no significant break, then his foreign earnings will likely be taxed in the UK if he's returned.

Speculating obviously, but seems highly unlikely he'll have qualified.

Have you taken your devout Muslim client's zakat into account? Or the fact that there are many reasons (family, friends, that sort of thing) why someone would take a financial hit to return home?

People care about more than money. Shocking, I know.

Nothing would surprise me. They were heavily into automation 10 years ago.

One of the big projects was called MTD (Making Tax Digital). Real time online tax, basically. It was a massive but got hideously delayed thanks to Brexit (Project resources were all switched to that). Where it is now I’ve no idea.

I’m not sure AI can ever replace people expertise and judgement though, especially when it comes to agreeing settlements. I’m seeing a former Tax Inspector mate tomorrow - I’ll ask him.

“People care about more than just money”

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL - brilliant.

Mate, you’re talking about a bloke who gave up being captain of one of the top 20-30 clubs in the country, playing in front of 30k people who adore him every week to go and play in front of one man and his dog and live in a desert.

I think you’d be hard pressed to make an argument he did this for any reasons other than a massive tax free wedge.

And good on him! I’d have done the same.
