Apparently CR7 hit O'Shea during an international in 2021 but didn't get sent off - looked like a worse offence than last night. Does O'Shea have history here and maybe thought "i'll get you sent off this time"?

Anyone know what happened previously?

Down arrow for being part of his media machine and calling him that instead of Ronaldo.
No idea what happened previously, but there was no “I’ll get you sent off this time”, he swung an elbow, that’s violent conduct and a red.

Yes i understand, it was laziness on my part - i dislike 'Ronaldo' because that is a great Brazilian forward

Yes he was. But everyone understands that he didn’t get sent off for elbowing O’Shea whilst playing for Portugal

Yes that's exactly what happened. O'Shea planned it all. The fact he was facing away from him and got an elbow in the back is completely irrelevant...

Can we please stop buying into his obnoxious "brand" by saying CR7?

It’s a helpful identity to distinguish him from the original, and vastly superior, Ronaldo.

Ronaldo - the Portugal international- is one of the greatest footballers ever. The Brazilian one, through still great, is no where near as good.

I might be wrong but I think Cristiano Ronaldo is his "surname" similar (but via a different convention) to Walle Egeli.

So Ronaldo doesn't need differentiating from Cristiano Ronaldo

It's a bit mean, but I always refer to him as fat Ronaldo and this one as T**t Ronaldo.

Matt in London makes a fair point, but I’ll not have anyone persuade me that peak CR7 was a better player than peak (OG) Ronaldo, who was one of the most unstoppable forces I’ve seen on a football pitch.

Peak for peak, Ronaldo was a better player, imo. But he was hampered by injuries and didn't sustain his peak for all that long. Shit Ronaldo did well to transform himself from a hilariously wasteful show pony winger to Ian Rush on steroids and he deserves credit for that and for his longevity I guess but he's a bellend so that credit is given grudgingly. I still greatly enjoy that you know shit Ronaldo was desperate to be seen as the greatest player of his generation and yet was consistently overshadowed by a dwarf.

Not quite. ‘Cristiano’ is his first name, and ‘Ronaldo’ is his second name (named after Ronald Reagan, apparently). His surnames are ‘dos Santos Aveiro’.

In Brazil OG Ronaldo is known as ‘Ronaldo Fenomeno’, which is how they distinguish the two in Portuguese.

Yes i put "surname" in quotes because i meant the name he is known as, or called by commentators, rather than the family name.

What i mean is, he's not Barry Bannon. Cristiano is just as much a part of the name commentators should use as Ronaldo, it's not first name Cristiano, surname Ronaldo. Whereas R9 (lol) is just Ronaldo.

Gotcha - yeah that makes sense and understand your use of quotation marks now! I was thrown off by the comparison to Sindre (though I must admit I’m completely ignorant on how Norwegian naming conventions work).

A lot of people love him though, because I noticed that the lunchbox area of said statue is a lot shinier than the rest of it!
