So, Farage admitting to being a ‘fun’ racist on 19:19 - Nov 24 by Cheltenham_Blue
Trouble is many of those who support him support this precise position on racial abuse. "It's just Banter"
Love the way he keeps saying "It was 49 years ago", Hitler was 80 years ago and we've quite rightly not let him off yet.
In fairness, there are probably very few people who never heard, told or laughed at a racist joke etc when a child back in the 70s and 80s.
The intelligent and honest answer for most would be- they were different times, I probably did, but I was young and ignorant and know much much better now.

Were he to gain power, he wouldn't dismantle the NHS in a hurtful or insulting way either. It would simply be privatised for the benefit of those paying the most tax and those owning most private healthcare companies.

How many of them were in the running to be Prime Minister though, when just over 18% of the electorate are a minority?

That’s probably broadly true, but that’s still a long way from the racist and extremist far right views Farage displayed during that time. He’s so slimy trying to wheedle his way out of it with guarded and caveated excuses. Typical Farage. He’ll stay just on the right side of the line that’s seen broadly acceptable. Or in other words, he’ll go as far as he can get away with. The more people pander to him and other parties ape his views, the further he’ll go. He’s a cancer.

Classic Farage. Doesn't answer the interviewer's question but asks himself one then gives the answer that fits. There are people who seriously want this man to be Prime Minister.

Mind boggling isn’t it? If nothing else, look at how bad his pet project Brexit has been for the UK and how badly Reform-led councils are doing. Even if someone has similar racist views, Reform’s incompetence should be enough to put them off (the current Labour Party has all the anti-foreigner bases covered anyway).

And he told the interviewer he wouldn't understand. Contemptuous, condescending @hole.

wow If that's your "on the other hand" take on the racist little worm then you might need a life rethink.

He’s not wrong. There were racists in plain view on prime time TV back then. Jim Davidson had a gag about a mum sticking her black kids to the window of supermarkets by their lips so they wouldn’t run off and cause trouble, for example. It was mainstream, people laughed.
This is what Farage is trying to tap into to excuse his own racism. Understanding his approach isn’t the same as endorsing it.

Momentum is building. There could be something in this.

True story.. When I was about 6 years old our family dog had puppies, one of which was all black. My father named it Sambo and I still remember him proudly explaining the reason. Obviously I didn't understand back then but I cringe with embarrassment and shame, just thinking about it today, 53 years later. I also remember him drowning some of the puppies in the bathtub. This all seemed to be quite acceptable in the early 70s.

I would like to point out that the stories relayed there go beyond what was simply accepted for the time. That is downright unpleasant and at the extreme end of what tended to go on. I just wanted to clarify that after having agreed with comments earlier that they were different times. Anthony Butler's comment is nearer the mark. Many of us could (and should) have stepped in with some of the things that went on and didn't and owe those on the end of abuse an apology.
I am not convinced that highlighting views that Farage had 50 years ago does anything more than confirm the views of people that oppose him that he is a wrong'un, whilst at the same having no impact on those who might vote for him.
What should be taking place is a rebuttal of the narrative that Farage is currently peddling.
Instead, we have both the Tories and Labour feeding into his narrative and thus doing Farage's job for him.
For what it is worth, I am not convinced that Farage wants to be PM, partly because of the effort it would involve and partly because he surely knows that the MPs elected for Reform would be a bit of a shower.
Therefore, I could see him entering into some sort of pact with the Tories as he did in 2019, and either settling for a Cabinet post, or even walking away completely, having achieved what he set out to do with the hardening of policies in relation to migration.

This is a news story from the Guardian, nothing to do with the Tories or Labour.
I thought the thing Farage was trying to achieve was to line the pockets of Nigel Farage.

This.
The Guardian telling their readership that a bloke most of us detest and believe is a racist, held racist views is hardly moving the dial or the narrative...
