Just back in Cheltenham. Some observations from the SAR 20:27 - Dec 6 with 3910 viewsCheltenham_Blue

People around me were on Hirst, Walton and bizarrely Philogene from the word go, I'm also surrounded by idiots. I'll give you some examples.

"Hirst, you're f**king Sh1t" (After 5 minutes)
"What's Hirst doing? Just wandering around?"
"dear o dear, there's no point giving it to Philogene, all he does is fall over"
"dear o dear, he's not very good is he?" (Matusiwa)
"They really need to take Hirst off" (after 20 minutes)
"Philogene isn't going to do anything, with his matchstick legs"
"Oh no, here we go" (Every time Walton had control of the ball)
Coventry keeper catches the ball then drops it and puts his foot on it (REF!! 8 Seconds ref, 8 seconds!!"
"I don't know why they keep giving it to Philogene, not with his spindly legs"
"They need to take Nunez off at half time, he looks shot"
"That Wall-E doesn't look strong enough to me"

Atmosphere around me was awful in the first half, no wonder the players can't respond to that.

General Thoughts

Thought we were great in the 2nd half, Kipre was immense, and I'm worried Simms might still be in his pocket.

Assistant running the line in front of the Cobbold was awful, maybe 3 times the ball clearly went out of play and he missed everyone of them

As a crowd we were poor until 2 nil up, you could still feel a lot of nerves at 1-0.

This is basically defending anti-social behaviour. Allowing oneself to lose control due to over indulgence of alcohol in no excuse.

If you think some muttering at a football is anti-social behaviour then I can only imagine the world is a very scary place for you!

Not to defend some of those comments but isn’t there a danger of overblowing some of this stuff and creating a narrative that’s not really there. Football’s an emotional game of highs and lows, people have had a few drinks and say stuff. This has always happened at football.

Agreed, half the issue is everyone can hear the div comments because it’s so quiet until we score.

Top tier of SAR.

The grief given to Hirst from some was disappointing (although it was clear his low confidence led to him miscontrolling and then failing to take the one-on-ones). I preferred to see it as at least he was getting into those positions and getting away from the defence. I was delighted he finally put one away.

I didn't hear grief for Philogene (I guess some fans pick on different players). I thought he had a good game tracking back well as well as beating his man and creating things.

Equally didn't hear anything directed at Matusiwa but he again had a quiet game. I felt for him when he got flattened by their player.

Walton caused concern but those fans always do react to the fact we play put from the back. I did think it was poor when he handled it as he had time to step back into his area before picking it up.

That Coventry keeper one I found very odd. Someone shouted "ref" and I just thought the ball's in play what do you want the ref to do?

Nunez was great wasn't he? Anyone who said that either wasn't watching or doesn't understand football. Similarly Egeli. He has always looked strong to me. Had one poor clearance at one point when he should have held on to the ball but he is looking a class player.

I didn't see the ball going out missed by the assistant at all (and I was high up in line with that line). I did think he wrongly called Hirst and/or Philogene (once too) offside but (being in SAR) I wasn't anything like in line to see so he probably did get them right.

I can understand the crowd nerves. I was still nervous at 2-0 until about 85 min.

This narrative about how bad pr is.. it was the same when I had my season ticket for years i genuinely dont know what its brought up now like its a new thing. My dad had a barnie with a fella in front of us when I was younger because he kept shouting the c word at one of the players.

Some things I just don't understand. The op. Just back from a 3 0 win and one line about the football the rest about the crowd.

How many games have you attended at Portman Road recently? The abuse from some fans at times is visceral.

It’s not right to defend such behaviour because it’s at a football match and ‘people are a little drunk’.

If you started yelling people were c*#ts in the high street, or around the suburbs, you’re likely to get hauled up for anti-social behaviour. Next people defend racial slurs because it’s at a football match.

Those Neanderthal attitudes are the reserve of the terraces in the 70s and 80s, and should remain there. No, the world isn’t a scary place for me, but people with the attitude that some of what’s being shouted out at our games is ok make me very sad for that part of humanity (if it can really be considered humanity).

Palace and Bournemouth games last year. In SAR. Some similarly mild murmurings of discontent could be heard but didn’t think them worthy of comment. It’s the sort of stuff you could hear every week at every ground in the country. And to go from “I think

I really don’t get why some at a go at Walton as he has been superb in all aspects .

I find it very hard to keep calm (and I don’t)with some negativity towards the players from some of the idiots the ground and abuse just for the sake of it.

Sit in SAR upper near away fans and to be fair most fans pretty good in that section and get behind the team.

I appreciate it's a long old way to Ipswich from Cheltenham but this does properly read like a day tripper report. Football fans especially a few pints in the tank aren't gong to exclusively say nice and supportive things all game. How can you remember individual comments anyway, were you taking notes?

Abusing players and delivering the treatment as so many of our ‘fans’ do is not support and neither is it passion.

It’s aggression, hate, a desire to fill up inadequate lives with vitriol. To fill a gap by thinking they can make a difference. If they can get a manager or a player’s father to say leave a player(s) alone that’s a victory. Thats a certain percentage of ITFC support and it’s sad.

Good to see you on here after my team won. A rare thing. Leicester did well. Good weekend for you with the closest thing to rivals they have with Coventry losing.

Agreed. You only have to read the comments on the home page when the team selection is posted to realised that there are some really sad and frustrated people out there. This is pre match well before they get into “Bantz” and booze!

I gave both barrels to a 'fan' sat near us today who was giving loud verbals to Hirst all game. We all know Hirst has been struggling, and of course we all have a grumble when players make mistakes, but if you're loudly screaming "f#ck off Hirst, you're so sh1t" you can very much f#ck off yourself.

Deary me. Old Frimmers is almost back fully isn’t he?
He’s been creeping back slowly for a while, almost complete now. Shame.

It was observations from my seat Frimmers. It was bad enough around me today that it made me want to sit somewhere else. The match had been discussed on here for 3 hours before I got home, I doubt my view on it wouldn’t have added to it.

As someone at the game of course your view on the football itself would be welcome thats why we are all on here after all. Esp after a day's worth of travel. Id have thought you'd be more keen to talk about the win over a post about crowds.

What is is that makes crowds different today than it was 20 odd years a go. Or are we saying its not different its just not pleasant now as it wasn't pleasant then.

I dont know what this old frimmers stuff you keep running with. But notice you dont say it when I agree with something you post. But as ive said to others if I say something you dont like please raise with phil and the guys can let me know if im creeping back into old habits.

Abuse dished out in the 70/80s was towards the opposition supporters and the clubs’ directors, owners and sometimes the manager. Rarely the players. There was a lot of hate about but of the grounds I went to (midlands and south mainly) Portman Road had one of the best, most supportive environments, if a bit quiet, of any.

Not now - those days have gone. I doubt it’s purely pills and booze. There are far too many people out there who are utterly inadequate.

The only time I saw it to a player in the mid/early 70s was the hate Spurs supporters dished up at WHL on John Pratt from the first minute. He well and truly got it. The laugh was that late in the game he scored Tottenham’s equaliser.

The idiotic thing about those tools that engage in abuse is that as individuals they’d not dare do that to a player’s face. Nor would they do it too often to anyone without regular visits to A&E.

Was also in SAR today - a lot of miserable old blokes about, that's for sure! Happy to moan, but not to sing.

Last time we were in the SBR whenever the opposition brought on a sub the large bloke behind me shouted out "They are bringing another f.....g bast..d on!"

Well said. And the other irony is of course that those same morons will be the first to throw themselves into any celebration of success at the end of the season and claim they supported the team!

Loads of tracking, closing and pressing.

Teams are not allowing him inside now, and teams have worked on stopping him in general

But he is still helping us stretch teams. And he was crucial in the move for the first goal.

As a fan of the club I think we can assume that like all(?) Town fans the OP was delighted with the outcome of the game. Obviously 'fans' shouting abuse at their own players at the top of their voices probably warrants a comment. It not for you to decide what others comment on. Some of your own contributions leave a lot to be desired.
