It’s understandable to a degree as the balance he brings and his dependable and unflashy nature means that those without a keen eye are not going to appreciate what he brings to the side- however he has been very solid and dependable and a solid replacement in that auxiliary right back/right centre back role vacated by Tuanzebe.
Reality is, people are looking for someone to blame and they care not if their criticism is based in fact/reality, they’re led by feelings- and we’ve a lot of ‘supporters’ who appear week-by-week to be really struggling to manage their feelings. [Post edited 13 Dec 18:09]

What he lacks for me is a proper right sided winger.
Furlongs game is not about overlapping. So for me it never really works with egeli or even Clarke today who still tried to come inside.
Im intrigued to see how furlong does with wes tbh.
Id like more balls over the top from furlong which I think hed enjoy. But thats pointless with egeli etc. It has to be a flying winger. |  |

Have you actually seen him play? I have, albeit not today - yet.
I watched him quite close up on Weds and he was excellent. Up against a Stoke team that was more than decent, he dealt with his opponents just as well as Tuanzebe could with the added addition of playing week in week out.
One thing he is not great on is his final ball. But then neithers was Tuanzebe. H Clarke was ok at that but got pulled all over the place.
He’s a good player. £3m for a player? Is that expensive in these days of inflated transfer fees? Who would you have brought in that’s better?

Unfortunately for us, probably not of the quality to be playing week in week out in a team with top 2 ambitions.

I have no idea why we have 4 right backs and only one left back. However, I think Furlong has been solid and reliable enough. When you consider the money we've spent down that right hand side, Furlong is the least of our worries. Egeli I've always had a soft spot for, and he's started to really come good. But McAteer and Ogbene have, let's say, not been excellent value for money. |  | | |
