Been thinking about this 70 yard’er 20:06 - Dec 14 with 1593 viewsITFC_84

Would any of our lot have the nouse, mettle or even the daring to take it on?

The only one that springs to mind is Chappers. None of our current squad would take it on - they’re all far too ‘programmed’. I mean, they don’t even want to take a shot on from 12 yards out…

The back-to-back squad didn't seem to have this mental block.

As for the current team, they move around like robots with zero initiative, flexibility all tied up in the own individual fixed patterns of play,

I wonder why, has McK or MA turned into some totalitarian dictator overnight?

Considering rocket jack taylor gets near to 0 attempts at goal i dont know who I'd see have it in their locker. Maybe philly.

Im quite astonished really that we have never tried the make the most of taylors shooting. I imagine hed be keen but we dont really tend to get him into that position it tends to be nunez and recently azon.

BTW just realised people may think rocket is taking the pss. Its not. Its a positive nickname based on his powerful shot ability

Philogene has scored most of his goals outside of the box from range, Nunez keeps trying it even on his wrong foot, our centre backs have tried a few from range...
The issue is that the patterns of play don't allow openings for better long-range opportunities for the rest of the squad to try it.

Im impressed that there is a new thread having a go at our current squad, at 8pm on a Sunday evening.

And Frimmers is adding his 52p worth

Probably, yeah.

There are enough genuine issues to be concerned about without people trying to ridiculously and pointlessly squeeze negative thoughts out of nothing.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

So much this. It's like there is a rush to see who can get the most original negative take whenever we have a bad result.

Yesterday was rubbish, in so many ways, there really is no need to create speculative angles to be negative with.

Nunez is exactly the type of player that would try that, so I think you're trying to find faults that don't exist.

I think Taylor would probably try it, maybe Philogene. Part of it is having the vision to do it, but that's a different argument.

You mean like the long range effort from Leif against Stoke?
That sort of thing?

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

The one that left Azon with an open goal ... that he missed you mean!

How often do opposition keepers play so far out of goal that we could try it. The fact a few have tried it against Walton this season suggests he has been pushing his luck a bit. Clearly only Fatawu had the skill to execute it effectively. I recall Adam Reach doing it against us a few seasons ago but they are not common goals and require a combination of circumstances to work out.

I don't criticise our players for not scoring from 70 yards. But I do despair when time and time and time again we have a lame first half in particular with more touches in the box than our opponents, a just about reasonable number of shots, and yet a bafflingly low number of shots on target. Let's not run before we can walk. Our strikers and other attackers need to up their game in this respect. The number 10s and Azon in particular.

I wanted to post on a positive that "someone" scored for Ipswich from the half way line (or almost half way) way back in the 1990's, possibly around the same time as Beckham did it.

I can't find any reference to it, but it you hooked me up to a lie detector, the needle would stay steadfastly on "zero" if I was to say Frank Yallop scored from that distance in a real Those Were The Day(dreams?) moment!

Can any fellow old codgers confirm or refute this?!

Jason Cundy did.

Although his goal was against us, when he was a Spurs player.
It was at Portman Road, though.

Kevin Beattie scored from his own half. Cant remember which game though.
Peter (Diesel) Morris put in a shot from the halfway line via the underside of the bar that I swear was still rising as it went in.

Now remind me what I had for tea yesterday ?

I don’t know tbh.

Don’t remember anyone scoring like that, closest I can think of is when Reuser hit the bar trying one from near halfway at Soton the year we finished 5th in the Prem?

Jaden Philogene had an equally good chance to fo it once in the 2nd half but I doubt it even crossed his mind and he was in the centre of the centre circle....and for that matter there was one opportunity for Taylor to let fly the same as their first.. what do they say about winning raffles?

Not as far out but Philogene ripped one into the top corner from 30 yards on his wrong foot at 1-1 in the derby. I think any complaints that we're not seeing good goals from this squad is really odd tbh, I'd argue we're not seeing enough of the less sexy ones tbh.

McKenna doesnt allow fir the impromptu, so no, this Town side is very unlikely to do a 60-70 yard speculative shot....we build from the back, slowly, whatever.....

I remember Magic trying to Lob Barthez from near the halfway line that same season and Barthez just about made it back to his goalline to stop the shot

Think Nunez would give it a go. I can't recall even seeing an opportunity to do it, since Chaplin.
