Hirst injury 11:28 - Dec 21 with 1413 viewscbower

I really hope it's minor and the substitution was mainly precautionary but it does make the recruitment of a quality No9 ASAP even more pressing. Starting a run of games with either Azon or Akpom up there does not enthuse me and talk of playing Szmodics there on his own is equally unappealing.
The consensus view on the signing of a striker is, like with Keiffer Moore, we'll have to wait for the dominoes to fall. Unfortunately, I think that wait could be really damaging to our chances.

May be talking out my backside, but I got the impression Hirst wanted to try and carry on. He looked like he was at the sideline, waiting to get back on, and was then bitterly disappointed when he realised he was being subbed. Was the right decision to take him off, with a busy Xmas period ahead.

We had this issue around the same time of the year in our promotion season. And it coincided with a run of poor results and performances which saw us drop from 2nd to 5th..

The issue we have this time is that we are already in the chasing pack so we don't have any margin for error.

Looked like a hip or groin injury to me.

Trouble is, there are very few players who fit Hirsts profile, hence why we were in for Broja despite his injury. Possible is Osula at Newcastle, been out injured but due back, could be a fitness loan.

Emil Riis at Bristol City another possible, but there really isn't any depth in that profile.

One curveball, as we've been actively scouting France, is Kader Meite from Stade Rennais, Holds an Irish Passport, so would add to the pile.

2 years ago against Leicester he did the same thing. Played on for a tiny bit and missed half a season!

True but two years ago our options were an uninterested Freddie Ladapo and Kayden Jackson. Azon and Akpom are more than capable cover at this level. I think a new striker would be useful though, nobody (including Hirst) has been playing well consistently in that role for us this season.

Yes they should be at this level,
Azon should probably be on 6 by now,

I don't see us signing a new No9 to just get us out of the division, it will be someone who can compete in the Prem, which is going to be expensive and difficult in January. Maybe a high quality loan but we already have 2 loan forwards.
Hopefully we've identified such player already🤞

Akpom could go to allow room for a more Hirst/Moore type of striker. So long as we don't just muddle on and bring Al Hamadi in if Hirst is out long-term.

Can we send him back?

He’s far from perfect but I thought Azon held the ball up and linked play better than Hirst has done in ages.

I like Azon but it would be hard to argue he's not better coming off the bench - albeit he played nearly the full game yesterday.

Whenever he starts the game seems to just pass him by.

Also note we were playing theoretically our easiest game of the season yesterday.

I don't know why but for whatever reason KM is reluctant to use Akpom in the 9, despite it being apparent he's not suited to playing 10 for us.

Never a good time to get injured, but just before the January window opens , really is bad luck for George….

With the obligation to buy Akpom if we get promoted, I can't see Ajax allowing us to terminate the loan. That is unless it's done in such a way that the buy clause remains in place, or we pay them a handsome sum to send him back.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Not sure we will be able to get that sort of permanent signing over the line in January. Very, very, difficult to achieve as you say.

I think we will have to go the loan route personally but time will tell!

yeah, tried to heal a hamstring by running for a while before breaking down. Not the best club decision.

We needed one new striker before GH got injured yesterday, so do we now need two?

Assuming GH is out for a while, hopefully not.

Hirst seems to always be hurt by Xmas last season he wasn’t getting a look in mind you anyway.

So maybe at this level, they’re not consistent and capable enough.
Don’t get me wrong, they are both clearly good players. For a team that is challenging for an immediate return to the Premier League however, just good isn’t really going to cut it.
