Hypothetically… Kalvin Phillips in Jan? 07:54 - Dec 22 with 1943 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Clearly available, so if it worked out would you take him back for the rest of the season? More likely to end up at a bottom 6 PL side, but not impossible he drops down (Wage contribution depending).

Flattered to deceive last year, but the championship may be slightly more suited for him and he could be a nice link between Matusiwa in the 6 and Nunez in the 10… a proper number 8?

Absolutely no chance.

He looked like a player who'd lost his love for the game when he was here, played with almost no urgency or aggression at all.

No idea whether he's fit or not, but there would be a big 'anti' contingent against him from the start here now unfortunately, so he'd have to hit the ground running, which might be unrealistic. Surely he has the mental strength to cope with that, but it would be detrimental to connection building.

I think a young, exuberant creator with a lot of energy is what we need in there alongside Matusiwa, and Taylor/Cajuste will do as backup. I still want the Mexican Marcel Ruiz. Get the crowd on their feet and stompin'. Bring us back some swagger.

A very loud no from me. He was a gamble that utterly failed last season and was a major reason why we got less competitive the longer the season went.

Even when he was fit enough to play, he was half a yard off it, a shadow of the player he once was. I’m not sure whether he even flattered to deceive.

I wish him well, but not here.

I’ve thought about this. He went to the same school as Chappers, he was a couple of years above.

A couple of feet above too, would be ideal.

I'd rather have Ted Phillip. A person who I'm not a fan of but could have been s good acquisition was Jamie Vardie. Apparently doing well at Cremonese Serei A.

Good lord. Id rather have Magilton back in the midfield than him. What part of Phillips being an expensive disaster here,on top of contributing nothing to any side in a football sense in the last 3 years, are some people missing?

Can't agree with that. His unfair sending off against Leicester is just one example which contradicts your view.

His wages would be too much of an obstacle in the Championship but if you were looking for somebody top cover Matusiwa when injured or suspended then he would be the ideal player.

i agree with "absolutely no chance", but not with his "lack of heart" for the game.

he was desperate to do well for us, but his body wasn't up to it after 2-3 years of injuries and minimal playing time.

i can't see how 6 months without football will have helped this situation, so no chance we will bring him in.

It’s almost as if the whole point of a football forum is for people to debate things….!

Agree that he’s done very little in the last few years. At Man City he was a big money transfer with the pressure of a high fee, at West Ham he was trying to prove to people he wasn’t a one club wonder at Leeds (safe to say he didn’t manage that in the slightest), then here last year he was the “glamour” signing from the PL champions to help try and keep us in the premier league… again, didn’t go too well.

What if the Championship would take all that pressure away? And he could play with a bit more freedom in a league where he’d get a bit more time on the ball.

In your own words that red card was unjustified, so it's not really a great example of him showing aggression or passion.

I just don't understand why anyone would want to go back for a player who has already failed here once. Same in the summer when people were suggesting Brandon Williams, and thankfully the club weren't daft enough to give him another chance.

Hard no. Kelvin Phillips is a project player, and January is not the time for that, especially with the associated cost.

The championship certainly doesn't give you more time on the ball. If this was the case then Cajuste would be the confident world beater we were all hoping for (he is improving though).

Not against him seemed a down to earth bloke. But wages wise a definite No as we can get 3 or 4 in for the money.

Going against the flow a bit.
As it's hypothetical I would say yes to a pay as you play arrangement.
We only saw the briefest of flashes of his ability while he was here.
He was starting to become a starter in a few games in the run up to his ridiculous sending off IIRC.
He didn't rock the boat and seemed pretty egoless throughout his time with us.
It was sad to witness the demise of such a great player to be honest.
The fact he hasn't signed for anyone since he left us probably tells it's own tale, but it's a hypothetical question and I've given my hypothetical response.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Who does he replace in the squad, and where does he improve it.

If we were talking about the KP who left Leeds to join City then it would be a no brainer, but he's not that player. Injuries, lack of form and I would suggest some internal mental battles have taken their toll on him.

I was and still am one of his biggest fans and was disappointed it did not work out last season, but I don't think we have the luxury of gambling on him this season as I do not think he offers a better option than Cajuste / Taylor based on what we saw from here last year.

Not sure what the questions is, but Kalvin probably isn't the answer.

I don't blame KM for taking a shot on him last year, was worth a try, but it didn't pay off.

In his current form (not peak KP of a few seasons ago), is he better than Cajuste, Taylor or, as a stand-in, Young? Not to mention Nunez can also play the position, with Humphreys additionally in reserve. Not convinced he'd be top of that list, especially with his injury record.

That's without considering likely wage expectations.

I think there are higher priorities if we're going to lash the cash - striker and cover for Matusiwa, plus making Kipre's deal permanent.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

if he hadn't got sent off and then injured immediately after I think it might have been a different story as he was just starting to find his feet again.

As it was he did nothing after that and sadly was a big fat waste of money. No blame on the club, it was worth a gamble - but sadly it didn't pay off!

In terms of squad places, an unpopular view but someone may as well replace Humphreys if he’s not going to get a single look in. I think he’ll be out on loan in Jan which will free up a space. For what it’s worth, I absolutely think CH should’ve had some game time by now.
