Might be wishful thinking but seemed ambiguous from Kmac that “if” he goes will be wished well, but also has other options on the table. Then proceeded to big him up, and said he spoke to him yesterday.

Could we be one of those offers ? Didn’t seem out of the question by any means

Ahh. Well hopefully we will sign another top CM who can step up if we get promoted and he can remain a high point in our history.

He's not coming back, we don't want him, he doesn't want us, he won't benefit us in any way, let's all move on, like the club have done.

I don’t see how you come to that conclusion, better than Taylor, more effective defensively than Cajuste and on on present form attacking wise as well. Better than Cam.

So better than all the midfielders we have bar Matusiwa.

We do need a midfielder and great if we can get one better than Sam, but that far from a given.

He's 34 and not played for two months, he's not going to be anything like match fit and given his age he's already not the player we all remember.

Really need to move on from looking at the old guard. They did magnificently but times change.

Different, not better. He’d be coming in to play in place of Matusiwa, not alongside him. He’s not needed for that role.

He could easily play along side him, and we are 1 injury from disaster with Matusiwa, Morsy would be ideal for that.

He could. That doesn’t mean it would be good, and we wouldn’t loose too much balance. They are too similar, except Matusiwa is now better in most areas. You want complimentary CMs in our system, not clones.

I love Morsy, but don’t get the blind nostalgia. He was dropping off the pace last season, and more time has now passed.

Would happily have him back. Him and Matusiwa would be a hell of a pairing.
I know we should move on, but he was so, so good for us before, I just want him back.

I don't think he and Matusiwa together would be a good pairing. Two players more on the defensive side, without the more progressive element of Cajuste or Taylor. Taking a link between midfield and forwards out of the equation.

It's not like we're leaking masses of goals and the backline needs more protection.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Quite. Similar to the "can we just keep politics out of this" argument.

Not really no, it effects literally everything.

I think it'd be awful for Morsy to come back here and be second fiddle to Matusiwa.

He doesn't want that, he's a winner, he'll want to play.

IF he could come and be our Matusiwa back up for suspensions and such like, then absolutely, but for a short contract? Not likely.

If we don't get promoted, it won't be because we didn't sign an ageing midfielder who was already losing his legs last season.

He's gone. He's not coming back. Get over it.

Why?

Because, as has been outlined in other threads, and I have had confirmed to me by one of the board's more-reliable sources, the club don't want him back. His beliefs, attitudes, and outspokenness rubbed the wrong people up the wrong way.

There was a reason the club let a seven-figure asset walk out the door for nothing.

Yep. Not convinced McKenna has been fully on board with all the transfer decisions or agreed with the club on this one. From what he said about the plan being for Morsy to compete with Matusiwa, wouldn’t be surprised if he was spun a line too.

Might be cynical but it’s not that far fetched to think that it could’ve had an influence on a situation involving a player on high wages, coming towards the end of his contract/career, with decreasing market value etc. Especially when the club needed to try to upgrade the midfield and wanted to invest in younger players generally anyway.

The laces/armband thing could have been dealt with differently at the time if the club felt that strongly about the morality of it (although may not have wanted to bring more attention with an immediate response). I’m sure they’re not keen on anything that detracts from the inclusive community image that they’ve worked hard to build (and potentially alienates customers).

Perhaps more significantly though, the US owners were trying to attract investment (most likely from the US) at a time when the captain was outspoken on views which clashed with the stance taken by the US.

Age has caught up with Morsy, he was poor last year. He just couldn't cover the ground. He could have been use to us settling Matusiwa, but that is no longer needed. We need to find a younger, fitter and more mobile option.

‘Spun a line’ by who? Transfers are subject to his approval according to the CEO - something expressed in front of McKenna and something he’s never disagreed with. If you know different, I’m happy to be corrected.

If he wanted Morsy and key to this Sam wanted to be here and the terms were right, he’d never have left in the first place, let alone not return.

He’s 34, was noticeably slowing last year and even at the end of 2023/24 was getting caught with the ball from the keeper play outs on more than one occasion. It’s just that in that season, we were more free scoring and however many we conceded had the capacity to score more.

There is no way you can have two players if the same type in the same midfield and Morsy and Matusiwa are just that. Given the latter is a better player as of now, Sam could only be a squad player and if, god willing, we were promoted this season, he’d be gone in the summer. There’s not much in it for him.

Morsy is a professional. He has no loyalty whatsoever to any club including this one. When it comes to it only supporters have that. He wants to enjoy what’s left of his playing career and BCFC are the best club for him to do that. Nice areas to live around there too.

Let him go.

If Bristol City are promoted at our expense thanks to Sam, well done him and them. You make the best decisions you can at the time and not trying to turn back the clock on SM is the right one for all parties. I’d have been more than happy for him to stay in the summer if he’d wanted to, but that’s then not now.

The club will always put out their narrative, especially when it involves popular players. Just meant if what McKenna said is true about the plan being to integrate Mutusiwa more gradually with Morsy still in the squad (which makes sense given we’re short there), then I don’t believe there was complete transparency from above, as seemed obvious that Morsy would be allowed to move on. As McKenna says he’s still in regular contact with Morsy etc, I don’t get the impression that Sam thinks it was down to him either.

I understood the club decision at the time though and haven’t commented on whether I think we should have let him go or not. Can see both sides.
