I remember when they upgraded churchmans. The old one my ST was just left of the goal towards the back. We moved higher up when it was rebuilt. I liked the view but altho churchmans was never a singng stand... it felt even quieter once it got bigger. [Post edited 27 Dec 16:33]

I used to stand in the old one tier North Stand. The noise and atmosphere seemed incredible then.
In comparison, the 'new' Upper and Lower stands don't re-create the same
feel as there doesn't seem to be any unity (hard to hear each other).

I used to watch in awe at those in the lower north. My dad wasn't one for noise tho and i think also when I was younger you had to be 18 to sit in the lower north or thats what he used to tell me anyway lol.
I remember sir Alex commenting when we hosted utd that we were one of the loudest grounds hed played at... most of that 100% came from lower north that day | |

Lower tier of Churchmans now is pretty much the same footprint of the old stand.
Remove the seats, put the roof back and crush barriers in and job done. Oh, and a massive black post in the middle.
The back is the concourse now, but with no cover and some shed toilets in the middle and the far right hand side. |  |

When the lower North actually sings it’s absolutely fine for atmosphere and gets going around the ground inc SAR UPPER where I now sit.
Used to stand then sit in lower north near corner flag ( west stand) and we would sing so don’t why so many don’t sing anymore . |  | | |

Teenage years and early 20s spent in the North pens then moved to Churchmans terrace and had standing season ticket. When we went all seater in 1992 I selected my seat six rows from the back and been there ever since though only 2 rows in front of the hospitality seats installed from that post 2001 period. Imo when everyone is excited by the game Portman Rd is as good as anywhere and even Churchmans can be bouncing and loud. Overall I think the ground development has been good apart from the split teir issue in te North which was unavoidable with the space /planning restrictions that caused that. In hindsight the land now acquired at the Churchmans end would have been really useful to move the stand further south and create room at the north end for a single teir top.
Conclusion... I love Portman Road but I don't mind development BUT we must never move! |  | | |

The atmosphere suffered when they moved the away supporters out of the west side of the old North Stand. A shame. It gave everybody there a boost and much pleasure.

Really good, consistent singing and energy. I remember going in that open air between the west stand and north, and looking across and it was really loud.
I think the north (which is effectively the Lower Sir Bobby) then had a good age demographic and everyone was very invested in those burley promotion push seasons

I first enjoyed the delights of Churchmans in the 70s when I was tall enough to stand and see. Behind the goal, half way up in line with the right hand goal post as you looked down on the pitch.
Warm in winter, fun and the best option, provided you could get in 1.30 to 2pm. War of the Worlds cherry picker plus loads of cables = MOTD: even better. We usually won. Then there was the brick shthouse. Sort of upturned half pipe always sodden. Stench beyond description summer or winter. Paddle in, breath held, wazz, dash out. Army assault course completed. Loved it.
We’d stood and sat all over the ground by the start of the 80s, including NS. My dad disliked NS - I didn’t and did 2000/01 there with an ST. Lucky me. It was brilliant.
Now, as a fossil, I sit with the other fossils in the section next to the great and the good in the West Stand. Full circle nearly as my first ever game was from the Directors Box. Great view, easy access in and out, happy memories of times with my dad towards the end of his time. Perfect.
But it cannot replace the fun we had standing in Churchmans and as I grew up the terrace in front of the East Stand where the boxes are now. I saw the ground record broken there. 38,010. I was there! And saw s0d all. |  | | |

I was at that game too, but in the North Stand.
Incredible game to be at. I remember having to keep my hands up near my face so I could clap. We were packed together like sardines and there was no room to move your arms or anything else.

I only had an handful of games in the North, standing, I was lucky was that 1991-92 so saw us win the league. I have been in same seat in Lower North, since 1992-93 when we became seated. Being a bit of late comer to football I never used to like it tbh.I was working on a building site with a chap who had season tickets for him and his wife,he somehow got a couple of freebies for me and my niece.I think it was against Tranmere Rovers.
Anyhow I digress,we sat in the Cobbold stand and both me and my niece kept looking at the old North Stand thinking we wouldn’t mind some of that.
So off to the old North Stand we went and I believe the first game we went to was against Blackburn Rovers and Shearer was playing,we both loved it,the crowd were giving Shearer so much stick it was unreal.
I never had a season ticket for the old stand but I did for the new built stand,both upper and lower,but there is no comparison,everything is so different,some good some not so good,I think football has just changed now.
It’s not only town that has quiet crowd periods during the games it’s every club,even in the top league it can be very quiet now. |  |
