Every day, another step lower, down into the pit of fascism.

That the fabric of the most powerful democracy on Earth was unable to stand up to this kind of destruction from within is pretty depressing to say the least.

They had the knowledge, the position and the ability to steer the world towards a socially and environmentally secure future, and they went down this road.

No it’s not. The phrase that was used to send millions to their death was “Arbeit macht frei” which translates to "Work will set you free". I really wish people would stop invoking the Holocaust. It trivialises the unique, systematic, state sponsored genocide of six million Jews.

At a push you could say the slogan bears comparison to the Nazi Germany slogan “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer,” which translates to “One People, One Realm, One Leader,” but even then, if they were going to echo that surely they would shoehorn “one President” at the end.

Not much of a push required, is there?

If you think whoever came up with "One Homeland, One People, One Heritage" wasn't aware of the parallel with “One People, One Realm, One Leader”, you're barking mad.

My instinctive context when I read that was the millions who were sent to their death in the war in general, triggered by a fascist ideology, but I do understand why you were thinking of the Holocaust.

If I’ve seen the Holocaust invoked once, I’ve seen it invoked a million times. It’s sinething I recognise. And that’s what I saw in the tweet EG linked (btw I thought anyone using X was complicit). The phrase used to send six million Jews to their deaths was "Arbeit macht frei,"/ "Work will set you free" and I find it incredibly insulting to the victims that she has invoked the Holocaust by using a completely different phrase.

I completely agree with your second last sentence.

Well, there are elements of truth both the original tweet and yours. I don't think the intention is ever to trivialise but to highlight the similarity in language being used between those across social media today and language used by those who have committed atrocities in the past, including the holocaust. I don't find the references in any way trivializing.

You cannot deny that the wording has a striking similarity to a very well known peice of Nazi propaganda, which considering prior recent references from republiucans around Hitler etc should raise concerns, the term Reich is ambiguous in translation, Realm, Empire, Nation etc can be used.

Either way, the fact these terms are being used today should raise alarm bells, and the references to past regimes cannot be ignored.

Just my opinion, but those who have more direct connections with past atrocities may feel different.

“Arbeit macht frei” was not some universal Nazi slogan that defined the Holocaust. It is documented on the gates of only around 6–7 camps out of roughly 44,000 Nazi camps, sub-camps, ghettos and detention sites that existed across Europe. Treating that phrase as the defining symbol of the Holocaust flattens a far more complex and brutal reality.

It’s also worth remembering that around three million Jews were murdered outside the camp system entirely; through mass shootings, starvation, forced marches and village-by-village extermination, particularly in Eastern Europe. No gates. No slogans. No irony-laced signage at all.

So being “insulted” because someone used a different phrase misunderstands where the harm of the Holocaust actually lies. The horror was not the words on gates, but the systematic dehumanisation, coercion and industrialised murder of people, often without camps, slogans or symbolism of any kind.

Finally, telling someone to “visit Auschwitz-Birkenau” as a rhetorical weapon is uncomfortable in itself. Auschwitz should deepen understanding, not be used to police language in a way that narrows history down to a single phrase and treats emotional offence as the ultimate moral test.

EDIT: I am glad you removed your reference to visiting Auschwitz, but my last sentence still stands.

yes, that's right. because with trump there's only black and white, right and wrong, with us or against us, you either think the same as him or you're bad, don't think the same and you're not decent. he shouts slogans, uses simplistic labels, spreads hate, constantly manufactures enemies and fosters division. he wallows in divisiveness and never seeks common ground. political disagreements define how he treats people and whose views he values. he reads narrowly, exclusively relies on a small set of very dated ideas, and uses a very small set of historical and political analogies to shape the political slogans that he shouts.

we must all reject his approach to politics.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
