I’m trying to listen to that clown’s speech but, thinking I couldn’t be shocked any more, I am completely done in.

“If it wasn’t for us you’d be speaking German now.”

“In the Second World War we defended Greenland and shouldn’t have given it back.”

“Canada should be grateful to us. Canada lives because of the United States. You should remember that Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

And on and on…….

I would have liked someone to have replied with something along these lines:

"Well, Donald, that's quite a take on world history. Let me correct you on a few points. Denmark has owned Greenland since the 10th Century. That is roughly 800 years longer than the United States of America has existed. During World War 2, Denmark retained ownership of Greenland but allowed the US to place a base there. Very similar to the situation in the United Kingdom. Those bases in both territories still exist and remain available for the US to use. You never claimed ownership of the UK. Indeed, between 1075 and 1754 European nations including Norway, Denmark and the UK owned what is now the United States.

"If you wish to argue rights of ownership of Greenland, Europe has far greater rights to own the USA. That is before we talk about the trillions of dollars of debt the US owes European nations. I am not proposing we march into Washington, abduct Donald and his wife and stick them in the Tower of London, but can he see where we are going with this?

"Now, Mr Trump, stop running on about wanting Greenland. It isn't yours, it never will be yours and your Putinesque empire building isn't going to wash with us."

The truth is he has stated he won't use force which is progress and means he is well down the road of recognising he isn't going to get his way. He will move on to some other rhetoric and sabre-rattling very soon. However, he will also claim that his decision not to invade reinforces his claim to be the President of Peace and deserving of the Nobel Prize for it.

He's backed down on tariffs.

From Truth Social.

"Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Still, I am sure he will end up getting more out a deal with Denmark/Greenland than would have been the case if he had not kicked up a stink.

That has to be a satirical reply.

It’s definitely a back down.

The USA and NATO have had unfettered access to Greenland for military purposes for decades. They are basically reconfirming this

The USA wound down it’s presence from 10k troops to less than 200 over the last two decades.

He's on the World stage and I imagine it plays well back home.

As it is, we know what he's like. so best just to ignore him, save for what he says about Greenland.

Interesting and rather sinister analysis of the Trump speech which concludes with the following.

"Trump’s far-right allies have been worrying of late that he has become distracted by global conquest – Iran, Venezuela, Greenland – and losing sight of his creed of “America first”. On Wednesday he may have been addressing the wealthy elites in Davos but, as ever, his true target audience was the one back home. The message: I am still the great white hope."

Going back to mental capacity, I posted the following a couple of weeks ago, and in my view it is the people who believe all Trump says who lack mental acuity.

"Trump has lied and been polarising since he first put himself forward as the Republican nominee in 2015. And his supporters have lapped it up.

Within six months of Trump's announcement of his presidential campaign, FactCheck.org declared Trump the "King of Whoppers", stating, "In the 12 years of FactCheck.org's existence, we've never seen his match. He stands out not only for the sheer number of his factually false claims, but also for his brazen refusals to admit error when proven wrong."

Rutte appears to have convinced Trump he can secure an agreement which in reality is more or less the same as has existed for ages.

They are speculating a Cyprus type deal where the existing bases disused or still in use would be transferred to US sovereignty, though whether Rutte would have been authorized to make a deal of that nature would sound unlikely without direct Danish representation. Life will be dull without Trump in a few years, unless an even bigger nutjob replaces him and that person is unlikely to have the personality to carry it off like dear Donald does. Remarkable really.
