They'll block him (Andy Burnham) 09:27 - Jan 25 with 8667 viewsgtsb1966

You just know they will. It will then lead to infighting and the party tearing itself apart. Starmer is so unpopular he is toast so just let him stand. If they block him that's one vote they've lost whatever happens in the future.

Utter fools.

May as well just make Farage PM now.

Labour seem intent on helping Reform as much as they can.

As someone in the comments has suggested, it would be interesting to see what happens if another safe seat MP resigns for Burnham, and the NEC has to block his nomination again (and again, and again...).

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

As I’ve said daily I really can’t stand Starmer but Jeez look at who would take over it could go from bad to worse.

I agree... it could be Farage taking over, and that will be a thousand times worse.

Things like this were inevitable once they got full control of the party and the NEC. It was this that enabled them to handpick appropriate candidates for the General Election, a major factor in my resigning from the party, because what's the point of being a member of the party if you don't have any say.

In this sense, they are much more Stalinist than Corbyn ever was.

As it has turned out, those they handpicked haven't been as malleable as they hoped not least because their seats are at stake. And I could see a scenario in which the position for Labour becomes so bad, that politically the NEC cannot ignore the views of MPs and members. But whether a seat for Burnham is available is another matter, and I don't see Streeting, Rayner or Mahmood as the answer.

As it is, I still get an account of NEC meetings from a constituency member of the NEC, so will be interested to see her account of today's meeting, assuming it isn't embargoed.

This sums up my feelings well.

MP for Poole, Neil Duncan-Jordan, also said: “The strength of the labour movement lies in its pluralist broad church. The authoritarian factionalism of the labour right is tearing us apart. This must be reversed. Our members expect us to come together to beat Reform. This stitch-up puts control before country."

"Those who have orchestrated this outcome are happy to destroy the Labour Party because of their deep seated factionalism. We’ve seen this before when some individuals were actively working against us winning. We’re rapidly losing all sense of reason.”

Starmer voted against Burnham. For that reason I'll never vote Labour again whilst he is prime minister. He's a coward.

That’s how I see it. They’re absolute idiots. Do you think it’s a case of political strategy genius McSweeney calling the shots again or is this more likely to be driven by Starmer over fears of a challenge?

Whoever is coming up with their strategy couldn’t be getting things more wrong. I don’t think polls are showing any gains in support from Reform voters, yet they’re haemorrhaging support to the Greens, LDs, and Plaid here in Wales.

This looks like another nail in the coffin for Labour. It’s crossing over here into Welsh politics too, which is quite rare. English Labour are likely to
Kill off all their devolved parties too at this rate.

It's amazing how they've managed to so closely mirror the most recent version of the Tory government even down to being pulled apart by functionalism while boasting a huge majority. Add in the u-turns, the general lack of competence, the over reliance on being mean to immigrants, and it's easy to see why people feel there's no point voting for the two major parties anymore. If Labour don't offer an alternative, there's very little point to them.

McSweeney has been the driving force throughout (along with people like Reed), and I sense part of the problem is that Starmer, unlike Blair, doesn't have much in the way of political nous himself.

But the Ming vase strategy didn't even work in its own terms because at a time when the Tories were so unpopular, Labour only got 33% of the vote, not good foundations for when the going got tough, as it inevitably did.

In my view, their sole purpose was to destroy the left and get elected, and they clearly had no real strategy for government which after 14 years in opposition is inexcusable.

And when things went wrong they blamed Sue Gray when the real problem was with them. And now they are desperately trying to maintain their factional control, not really aware of the damage they are doing to the Labour Party.

As I've said of McSweeney before, He's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy.

But not surprisingly, I don't think this recently published book got much publicity.

Thanks for your reply. It seems like such a wasted opportunity both for Labour and the country. I can’t understand why they would think their approach works. From the public’s point of view, I agree with Herbs; what’s the point of Labour if they’re too similar to the outgoing, hated Tories? As he says, no wonder people are disillusioned.

I voted for them last time to get the Tories out. I’ve no regrets, as despite how poor Labour have been they are better in some areas. They were the only alternative, so I think we had to go through this stage. But they’ve been a disappointment and could have been so much better. I will be switching my vote to the least looney out of whoever stands who isn’t Reform/Tory/Labour. The only way I’d consider voting Labour is if they change the leadership and have a complete reset. Even then they’d have to do a lot to win back some trust.

Well they will change the leadership. It'll be to Streeting after May.

All of this was predictable from around 2020 when it became apparent what the Starmer project really was.

Net result Reform.

I think it's more than likely that the NEC will ignore those views. We've already seen that the right would rather burn the party to the ground and lose elections than have a left-wing leader.

Feels vs reals is the problem.

As Benter’s constantly reminds us, he hates things. As do many reform voters.

They will vote for any loudmouth that hates the same things, and validates their hates.

Plenty will support Tice.

The Tories put party before country and blew themselves up.
Labour are following suit.

When people who don't think very hard are claiming all politicians are the same and voting for any gobsh1te who lines up behind that, it's not a very bright idea to prove it to them.

Unless one or more of the major media outlets turns on Farage, we're doomed.
