Unsure of Dan Neil signing 14:55 - Jan 26 with 4664 viewsMartus

I'm just unsure where he fits in? We are well stocked with CM's - Cajuste, Taylor, Nunez can all play alongside Matusiwa. I don't see him as a Matusiwa replacement - so, if he does arrive, are we too stocked on CM's? I like the settled side we have and don't see another CM as the priority.

I wouldn't say I'm convinced with Nunez as a CAM - sure he has the assists, but would prefer him as a partner to Matusiwa. And would love to see Cajuste more - but feel he is too laid back for the ferocity of the Championship. And I love Taylor's fight and guile aswell - defo not good enough for Prem - but has earned his spot in the side.

So I just dont see the need for Dan Neil - where does he fit in?

For away games I would play three in midfield in any case. Ball retention on Saturday was woefully poor in the middle...even Matusiwa had a poor game. Playing a number ten away doesn't seem to work very well.

If we don’t get Neil done, it feels like we have a squad made for 3 midfields Matusiwa at the base with two in front Taylor and Cajuste/Nunez would suit all parties strengths

The only Muff in Town.

We will have 5 in a day or two,

4.5 with cajuste. Wouldn't want him to be, but wouldn't also be surprised if we ended his loan.

Probably the personnel rather than the system.

There's an argument that maybe we should have gone with 3 in midfield rather than play with a 10 who's been pretty ineffective when played there this season.

He is going to play alongside Azor because Taylor and Cajuste are not that good.

We can NOT finish the season with Azor plus Jack plus Jens.
Nunez is clearly a 10.
Try and imagine a world without Azor.

Really? I think this was an obvious area of the team to try and upgrade. Taylor has done an admirable job but isn't top of the Championship level. Cajuste has very occasional moments of sublime class but has been largely ineffective in my opinion - I am unconvinced by him. Nunez is currently our main number 10 - I don't think that's ideal either but he'll play there until someone else does a better job.

Neil goes almost straight in next to Matusiwa once fit and bedded in.

Not that I’ve been a regular viewer of Sunderland games over the years but when I have watched him, he’s looked quite similar to Hackney.

Will likely play the number 8 next to Azor.

"Its weird regarding Dan Neil - He was very much the Ying to Jobe's Yang. But every now and again he would come up with a Yang of his own. However, he strengthens Ipswich's squad for the run in. Sunderland have proved beyond all doubt that when you go up its virtually a new team these days. So doubt Neil will stay at Ipswich long term but lets hope he can make a positive contribution."

Just provided this thought around Neil to a Sunderland supporting friend. I think Dan Neil can prove to be versatile. He comes with fresh legs having warmed the bench all season. From what I have seen of him at Sunderland (which is a fair bit tbh) his contribution is more holding and defensive than attacking but can occasionally get forward and impact the game. One thing for certain is we cant deny his experience at 200+ games in the championship.

In place of Taylor who should have been sold last summer of 2025. Nice guy, Mid champ midfielder, could be sold for a fair bit of money, but not one to rely on weekly for top level performances.

I totally agree. i don't like criticising players, but in Taylors case he's a player that hasn't been good enough for two seasons and now get's to play fairley regularly.
Whilst I am aware that a team capable of getting into the Premier League and staying there is not easy we currently have far too many passenger.
A forward line that has two outstanding players, but both in the same position. No real No.10 although Nunez has done well. Three players vying for one position in the shape of Egeli,McAteer and Burns. One of whom can't get a regular game, one who is inexperienced and is struggling a bit and one back from a bad injury.
Then you have three others in Akpom, Azon and Hirst. One injured, one totally out of form and one who looks the best of the three but doesn't score anywhere near enough.
I think that Cairney would have been my choice, but I fully understand his position. Neil on the other hand is on his way out of Sunderland anyway and a loan is probably right as that doesn't mean we have to buy or even try to buy if promoted.

Dan Neil is no Premier League player. If we stay down he will be fine.

I think people need to get some of this out of their heads, he was only good enough for 13 minutes for Sunderland in the PL this year.

The only thinking should be quite short term at the moment to get back to the promise land, we need to get promoted this year and Taylor isn't a top level performer in the Championship.

He will start.

We need at least one in CM. Not sure where this "well stocked" has come from.

Sunderland fan says of Neil

‘Solid holding mid / b2b with high energy and reliable passing ability. Not too exciting player but a hard worker and a proper grafter. Sad to see him go.‘

Sounds like he is just what we need.

Taylor and Cajuste are ok as back up this season, but will need replacing next season, regardless of the division we are in.

Because Sunderland can't use him, doesn't mean we can't. I think he can easily play for a lower PL club. The fact that a few were looking at him would also suggest that. I like him and think he is exactly what we need.

Sounds good to me. We need more solid, reliable consistent 7/10 performers now at this stage of the season, rather than the sublime to ridiculous types like Cajuste.

We have 3 midfielders one who struggles to play more than 60 minutes as much as I like him and no cover for our holding midfielder who has been walking the tightrope of a ban for a while now and also looks like he needs a rest.

Yes we have Nunez but he’s not played in midfield for most of the season.

I don’t know much about Neil but if he’s an upgrade on Jack Taylor that’s also a good move. Matusiwa gets injured and we’re in trouble. We 100% need another player in midfield.

As much as Taylor has done well this year Neil is a significant upgrade.

Cajuste - much like last year in the Prem - does some sublime things in a game but is too easily bypassed by the opposition in midfield.

Nunez has been a revelation as a 10, but his 2-3 performances as part of the double pivot were bang average and he was bypassed by the opposition even more easily than Cajuste.

I'm hoping that if we go up McKenna has a Plan B, especially for away games that sees us less overrun in midfield and I'm assuming Azor, plus Neil plus a deeper lying 10 (possibly Nunez because he has played Centre Mid) will give us more of a chance of grinding out some points on our travels.
