I once went to see Worcestershire play in the limited overs cup competition (cricket, obvs) against Bedfordshire (sic) at Bedford, in the early 1990s. Proper David v Goliath. It had rained and didn't look like there would be any play.
Worcester sent a helicopter up to Bedford to hover over the pitch and dry it out. Didn't get much play, but they bowled Beds out for 66, Neal Radford taking 7 for 16 or thereabouts, and knocked those 66 runs off in no time. Tom Moody put a six through my dad's windscreen!
A helicopter seemed quite futuristic. The pitch-drying tech hasn't really moved on in those 30 plus years... |  | | |
