| Friday: McKenna says Smodz won’t go unless £££ fee is met on 21:43 - Feb 2 with 2184 views | JakeITFC | Maybe it’s a loan with an obligation and they didn’t have time to do the paperwork. | | | |

| Friday: McKenna says Smodz won’t go unless £££ fee is met on 21:46 - Feb 2 with 2079 views | le2blue | Obvious that the club wanted to get rid of him; clearly couldn't get the fee they wanted (Friday's comment part of the negotiation stance). Loaning a player who is unhappy and not wanted is the best for all parties. Not difficult to see what has gone on, really, and also somewhat of a predictable outcome given his wages, fee demand and age/injury record. | | | |
| Friday: McKenna says Smodz won’t go unless £££ fee is met on 21:46 - Feb 2 with 2081 views | megnuts | It’s been very apparent for quite a while he’s not wanted to be here. And for one reason or another, it’s not worked out for him here. If a player wants out, then why would we stop him? Just makes KMc look a little silly. In isolation, getting a player off the books who has no interest being here, who has spent this season injured, ill and not around the squad and when he has been fit still can’t get in the team, isn’t a bad thing. He’s not a key player who we’re drastically going to miss. All the best to him. | | | |

No obligation, from what I gather. Loan was as a fee couldn't be agreed. Believe Sammie wanted to make the move once it was on the table, I assume to play more regularly ahead of a potential World Cup squad place.

Whats the point of a loan fee with the window shut and an an empy place in the quad. Just made ou squad weaker and a rivals stronger Utterly bizarre I've very rarealy have been angry with my football club in the last 3 years but i'm angry today. Not signing a striker I can live with. But making your squad weaker when not necreesary to do so is just dumb. Even if he is not in the plans there is nothing to gain with this loan. God forbid Nunez, Mehmeti and Akpom don't all get injured.

Can sell him in the summer, still got two years on his deal. If he stays fit and scores goals would probably get a better fee for him than after a year when he's been injured for the most part.

Smodzic wasnt even in the squad on Saturday and weve got Philogene & Nunez & Young injured right now, its like even if you kept him where does he fit now ?

Not being in one squad doen't mean anything. He came off the bench and scored in the previous game. Plenty of players getting minutes now haven't been named in squads previoulsy. Even if Mckenna didn't think he;d play another minute what is the point of loaning to a rival and leaving ourselves with a gap in the squad that can't now be filled. Its just pointless. We may lose 5 or 6 players to injury, no one knows, it can happen and we now only have a 24 man squad so effectively made our squad weaker and our rivals stronger. Just dumb.

Hmm, looks a very good deal for Derby. Turn his head and get it wrapped up in the last hour. For balance, I’m not sure he’ll be worth any more in the summer, especially if he does little this next few months. If we go up, he’s on premier league money and will be nowhere near our squad.

It made total sense in the Premier League, where we knew we were going to be playing a relatively low block and counter-attacking football, where he would be able to play on the shoulder and break as he did in his successful season at Rovers (See Man City, Spurs...). It makes less sense in the Championship, where we were going to be dominant and need players to break a low block and create in a condensed space (See Jaden and Clarke). His time has gone, he no longer fits our system, time to move on.

Once again we seem to have had our pants pulled down when it comes to offloading a player deemed surplus to requirements. I'm pretty sure that was one of the accusations leveled at Ashton by Bristol fans after his arrival here - loading the squad with expensive players on high wages, who then proved impossible to shift. Ben Johnson, anyone?

| Friday: McKenna says Smodz won’t go unless £££ fee is met on 23:41 - Feb 2 with 1043 views | positivity | it's fairly simple. we bring in an upgrade no.10 , then we loan out the player he's pushed down the pecking order i'd rather loan him than sell him cheap (guaranteed to get a hat-trick if he'd have played against us!) | |

The classic, well trodden move to Derby so you can make the world cup squad.

I totally agree but why then are we loaning him out with an hour to go of a January window? Surely we sell him in the summer, or early this window.

We did the same thing last season, we were relegated with one empty spot in the squad. For whatever reason we seem unable to sign a gun centre forward and it’s been that way for 3 seasons now.

I think there's probably some weight to your last sentence. It would have looked awful if he'd scored against us while we're short on goals ourselves - something I doubt was lost on MA. Ultimately, hard to see what role he would play here - he is hopeless in our system at 10. WC in the summer, decent thing to let him go. Otherwise you just have an unhappy player around the camp who can't really contribute anything much in our current setup.

Is it because Szmodic is capable of playing as a 9 if we get an injury?
