Yes, she's pretty dreadful, but some of the criticism crosses a line into misogyny and racism. From that point, it's probably very easy for someone to discount any legitimate criticism on the basis that it's only being said because she's a black woman. | |

She could still be a really good commentator and pundit and not be likeable - likeability is irrelevant here. Viewers are happy to watch a commentator/ pundit they dislike if what they are saying is credible, insightful etc.

I certainly think he's been bold. But have a look at the context in order to understand the point he's trying to make.
I'd like to think most football fans these days are actively anti-racist, and supportive of the women's game (on a spectrum of somewhat to very). Yet I think the majority think that Eni has misjudged this debate somewhat. Especially in repeated and unprovoked digs at Ian Wright, who is (a) black, (b) a supporter of the women's game and women pundits, (c) entertaining, (d) a decent bloke, and (e) very experienced at a high level of football (and indeed through lower levels too!)
I make no comment on Eni's playing, punditry or experience. I just think she's come out swinging in the wrong direction, has misjudged the mood in the room, and need not be attacking an ally.
I have no idea the extent to which DEI initiatives have advanced her career, whether on account of her being black or female. I suspect possibly not terribly much actually. After all, on paper she presents as being well-qualified and intelligent. That probably got her a reasonable amount of respect at the start of her punditry career but I think she may be squandering that respect now and not coming across as terribly likeable. Not on the grounds of race, and not on the grounds of gender.
Other than the DEI point I think that Jordan makes some points that will rightly garner some support.
I want so much to be on the side of someone who was unnecessarily attacked by Joey Barton, whose views on females generally appear to be pretty offensive, and possibly even deliberately so. But I think in the current debate she's taken a misstep. |  | | |

The fundamental crux of it is that she is moaning about male pundits on women's football as a person who benefitted from being parachuted into TV positions in the male game that her talent (as either a footballer or a pundit) didn't justify. Good points. It does seem a strange fight for her to pick.
I’ve always assumed she ended up commentating and punditing because she was at the top of the game for so long. If TV companies can continually employ the likes of Merton and Shearer, things like ability are obviously lesser considerations. | |

Having just watched the full 40+ minute programme, it looks like she called up Talk Sport in the hope that she could set the record straight about various comments she had made.
She got onto the show and it became evident that everyone had understood what she had said the first time around.
Simon Jordan, who despite being annoyingly smug, articulately delivered some painful home truths about Eni not being particularly likeable.
The interview closed with Eni intimating that she would take her attributes as a pundit elsewhere if they were not appreciated in the UK, but that it would have been better for everyone if they saw the world through her eyes rather than focus on the things she had said in the past.
Simply put, poor Eni doesn't really get the fact that going around with a face that says "I've got a massive chip on my shoulder" is not what the punters tune into football for. |  | | |

She’s no oil painting that’s for sure. She is just digging herself a deeper hole. Don’t think she was a particularly brilliant player either. We have women commentators in the men’s game, but men aren’t allowed to comment on women’s football. Not exactly equality is it. You don’t attack an Arsenal legend, England legend and a man who I understand has done lots of work promoting the woman’s game. I think the Merson is clueless line is pretty lazy criticism. He can’t pronounce names (dyslexic) and sticks his neck on the line a lot more than other pundits do by committing to an opinion, but he’s very knowledgeable about the game | | | |
