| 10 Foods that belong in the bin on 20:41 - Feb 11 by Ryorry | Has someone spiked your stew with shrooms of a particular kind for you to so take leave of your usual senses?! 1. When I was a nipper, jam roly poly was food of the gods - why deny others such pleasure? 2. Don’t like those myself, but they’re cheap and filling. 3. The only one I agree with you on. 4. Probably saved myself & my bro from malnutrition when we were kids & parents were on their uppers - cheap & nutritionally rich. 5. Meh, but as 4. above 6. What’s wrong with em?! (in moderation, obvs). 7. Another magnificently nutritionally rich food group containing essentials that aren’t often appreciated, eg .selenium, zinc, iodine, DHA 8. Useful source of low fibre protein for those who need if able to tolerate soy. 9. Not a fan, but why deny to those who are? 10. They’re just poached or fried eggs stirred for 10+ seconds - what’s the problem?! |
When you were a nipper we used to school our kids in asbestos prefabs and the Simca was considered a reasonable car for the UK!

How true! My sister’s friend’s old man had a blue Simca estate. It was always fun with doss about opportunities such as unseen rude gestures to following cars to sit in the boot with feet against the rear door. Rubbish car, mind. But not as pitiful as the neighbour’s Skoda that spewed more smoke than HMS Suffolk running away from Bismarck. You are right about the prefabs too. Damn cold in winter, inherently unhealthy but presumably cheap and easy to build given knowledge gained in WW2 building prefab houses.

What people like, what they don’t. Need, health conditions what one has had to do in the past or the present was not the intention of it. |

I always liked beetroot, but Mrs C detests it so it never makes an appearance in our house. Well the bacon might improve it but as a basic, cauliflower cheese is a no from me. Don’t know why. It’s a bit like adoring twiglets but not being a fan of marmite. The best veggie meal I know of is proper Italian mushroom risotto. Beans or other stuff (mushrooms or cheese etc) on toast of course. Oh and in Malaysia some of the breakfast curries (vegetarian) were lovely too. [Post edited 12 Feb 7:45]

I think with beetroot you have to differentiate the vinegar soaked slices that come in jars from an actual whole beetroot as it is dug out of the ground. A proper beetroot peeled and thickly sliced before twenty minutes or so in the oven with a little bit of oil drizzled over (don't forget to turn the slices after twelve minutes) is a great addition to a roast.

I think the foods in question aren't the problem, more that a lot of you don't know how to cook! Olives, for example (as quite a few have menioned them) give a great 'tang' to many dishes, but especially crushed with sun dried tomatoes and olive oil in a frying pan, making a sauce to pour over tuna steaks.

It's so very much down to personal tastes, isn't it ? I prefer olives whole and barely cooked, for example if I'm making pasta I throw a dozen olives into the wok a couple of minutes before the pesto, mushrooms and tofu (or whatever) are done. Be careful if you're using the Kalamon ones with the stones still in them though, don't go biting down hard on those.

I like them whole as well, just making the point that there's more to them than meets the eye! I get excited if they're part of a dish I'm about to cook - especially if they're in something a bit boring like rice or couscous (see also raisins).

You were doing so well then fell at the last with the abominable black pudding addition. Had it been a little smoked bacon you’d have been in food heaven territory.

I’ve tried it plenty of times. Delicious it ain’t. I’d describe it as various levels of unpleasantness. Unless you are hungry and there’s no alternative, lots of far better things to chomp on. Fortunately, we are all different and even more fortunately have the luxury of choice.

It’s lovely on a fresh baguette with hot English mustard. It’s also great in a dish of rice, peas and fresh hot chilli with a fried egg on top. My mum got this recipe from a family she worked for in Ipswich in the 1960s who had previously lived in Indonesia. [Post edited 12 Feb 15:06]

Well, in its favour CB has proper texture which the other mashed connecting tissue and gonads in a can doesn’t. That recipe sounds interesting and something I’d try with that chilli angle to it. The problem is I can think of a number of better things a lovely fresh baguette can be adorned with. Corned beef hash if seasoned right is a good thing too. Ever tried these? I have. Well, when in Colorado n all that. Had to be tried - just the once. I did draw the line at the fried ducks feet in some interesting restaurant in Soho though. https://roadfood.com/dishes/ro

Good point. I grew up hating, eggs, semolina, rice pudding, liver and kidneys. As soon as you learn how to cook/prepare all of these things well, they taste great once you get over the psychological barrier you've created in your head since the age of six or seven.

| 10 Foods that belong in the bin on 11:33 - Feb 11 by NedPlimpton | A few points of order 1. Spam fritters are delicious 2. How can you have a full English without black pudding??? 3. What's wrong with wagon wheels 4. No prawns or any crustaceans? I'm genuinely starting to feel sorry for you and your childlike palette 5. Tofu isn't a meat substitute, it's its own thing and is very tasty when cooked well 6. Mac and cheese/cheese pasta/scrambled egg - now makes me think you're on a wind-up and this is pure rage-bait! |
The only thing wrong with wagon wheels can apply to most things these days and that's half the size and twice the price. I love chocolate. But bars of Cadbury which you used to get for a quid are now about £4. They have messed about with wine gums and they don't taste as nice as they used to. Mars bars are about 2/3rds the size they used to be and those big ones you could get were stopped to prevent people getting fat. What's stopping those that want more from buying two or a packet of four. As a kid we had a little shop in the village that doubled up as a store and post office. I could get 8 chews for a penny, Things like gob stoppers, jamborie bags, flying saucers, imps, cola chunks, pineapple chunks, imps, sherbet dips, liquorice pipes, sweet cigarettes with a football card. They did a square of gum with a football card as well. All the sweets were in huge jars and you got a 1/4 lb. in a paper bag. Sometimes you ended up with a small bit of paper in your mouth when you got to the bottom of the bag as with things like sherbet lemons they became sticky and stuck to the bag. You couldn't beat fish and chips out of a newspaper with salt and vinegar either. Now you need a mortgage to get them.
