10 Foods that belong in the bin 11:16 - Feb 11 with 4645 viewsChurchman

On the back of Benter’s Jam Roly Poly nightmare:

1. All steam puddings bar Christmas Pudding
2. Tapioca, semolina and associated slurry
3. Spam, luncheon meat, corned beef, Ye Olde Oak horror in a tin
4. Organs and offal - tripe, liver, kidney
5. Black Pudding
6. Wagonwheels
7. Prawns and all crustaceans
8. Tofu (why, just why?), quorn and any meat substitute. Eat the real thing!
9. Macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese (cauliflower, cheese or pasta - great but not as a combo)
10. Scrambled egg

Ban this little lot and the world is a better place.

I don’t know, I put up a perfectly rational topic for discussion with a justifiable bin fodder list and for obvious agreement and the downvotes roll in.

Oh well, I’ll try and live with the disappointment 😀

I should be more specific. American fast food fries - which are often cold, pappy and lacking in evidence of potato.

Fresh, Northern European fries with proper mayo are tremendous

That's fair. Give me a nice portion of hot fries and mayo with a Belgian beer in Bruges and I'm as happy as a pig in shit.

I must be more tolerant, I only have three items

1. Carcasses.
2. Embryos
3. Baby food taken from mothering animals for their young.

Waaaaaiiitttt a minute. It's taken me half an hour to work out but wouldn't number 3 equal a ban on cheese?

Wagon Wheels with Jaffa Cakes
Prawns with Dark Chocolate
Scramble eggs with jacket potato

I'm confused, are you saying YES as in to keep, they're great, or YES as in agreeing to bin?

If the latter: call yourself Irish and you're binning black pudding? Think you need to hand back your passport!

What???

Ban spam?

Spam fritters kept this country sensible. As soon as schools stopped serving spam fritters it spiraled out of control. All these problems with school kids, bring back spam fritters and behaviour would improve again.

Tofu is great. It's delicious when cooked by people who know how to cook it, it's high in protein, healthy. and animals don't need to be slaughtered for humans to enjoy it. It's a win/win/win/win. Also, Christmas pudding is the worst of the steamed puddings. That's like getting a tub of Quality Street and chucking everything away except the Toffee Penny. 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 are fair enough.

If you've not dined on spam fritters you've not lived. With a pineapple on top in the Lagos kitchen when I was a sprog.

And black pudding is as delicious as it comes.

Celery to be added to the list please.

You need celery for a soffrito base but it is really the only time I use it, so I'd rather it wasn't banned.

Spotted dick doesn't actually contain any d....

In a similar vein, peanuts aren't actually nuts, they're legumes.

I genuinely find it hilarious when people get irate about meat-free alternatives containing the name of the thing they're trying to replicate. Weirdly it feels like a very anti-woke thing, perhaps we should have stayed in the EU after all so those people can get their way

I like the idea of chilli in my scrambled eggs, can't think why I haven't tried it. I like scrambled eggs on toast and love putting some marmite on the toast.

In a similar vein:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

'Plant-based drink maker Oatly has lost a long-running legal battle over its use of the word "milk" in its marketing.

The Swedish company tried to trademark the slogan "post-milk generation" in the UK in 2021 but Dairy UK, the representative body for British dairy farmers, objected.

Following rulings in several courts, the UK Supreme Court on Wednesday said Oatly could neither trademark nor use the phrase "post-milk generation".

The long-running dispute has centred on Dairy UK's argument that, under trademark law, the term "milk" can only be used to refer to products that come from an animal.'

And I won't lose any sleep over Oatly's troubles:

'Oatly loses trademark infringement court case against Glebe Farm
The plant-based giant’s case that Glebe had sought to gain an ‘unfair advantage’ by passing off its goods as Oatly’s was rejected'

I've always had you down as one of the posters who could be relied on to be knowledgeable, sensible and rational and then you do this? I feel betrayed.

I'm with you up to number 3 but then you include corned beef? It won the war! Corned beef and horseradish in a toastie has to be eaten to be believed.

A full English without black pudding is a crime worthy of a visit to The Hague.

Prawns and crustaceans cooked well are luxury foods.

Tofu isn't a meat substitute and cooked properly is a joy.

The last of the cauliflower cheese is the perfect thickener for the remainder of the gravy at the end of a roast. Delicious

A well done scrambled egg cooked in butter and in a pan, not rubberised in the microwave is fabulous.

You neglected to mention any form of chocolate with orange and fast food 'fries' which are just dismal.
