Those saying that it doesn’t matter we went out like that 23:48 - Feb 13 with 3778 viewsBlueStreak

Are deluded. Two of our three biggest club achievements (ever) were in knock out competitions.

That was pathetic and disrespectful to our 1978 and 1981 teams.

Focus on the league?! For what? Finish 19th and get battered each week? I can’t believe the whole see next week is being accepted. This shows how weak our mentality continues to be. We should be ten points clear at the top, we aren’t. Bromley in the cup, out. Tonight, out. It’s pathetic.

All our silverware has come as a top flight club.

Winnng the FA Cup is a realistic aim once we are established there, but not now.

Getting to the semis of the League Cup under the Evans regime hardly made up for the years of Championship and L1 dross.

Proper ambition is believing we can stay in the Premier League when we return, just like Brighton or Brentford.

That will be the foundation from which more trophy lifting seasons are built.

But you just said given the choice between winning the FA Cup or promotion that you’d choose promotion - so clearly you would turn it down

I suppose if we go up we could maybe eventually become someone like Palace…I wonder what their highlight of the last 15 years is?

It’s not a question of turning anything down. It doesn’t work that way. You try and win every game. But youhave to manage your resources and if you think you can improve your chances of promotion by making 10 changes in a competition you cannot win you do it, don’t you?

The right decision was made last night, even if the performance was poor.

We know what Palace’s highlight of the last fifteen years is. But they couldn’t have done it without being in the Premier League with the team they had - which was light years better than ours was then and now.

Ironically they played the final much the same way as we played most of last season. A 1-10 formation. But they did it much better and had a few real top quality players to make the difference and a few things go their way.

I lived through both of those, and treasure both.

However, 1981 is what we need to learn from. 60 games that season, and at the end of March on track for the treble. We then went on a run of losing 80% of our games due to a congested schedule, injuries and overstretched players. Yes, it was a smaller squad, but also it was a far less athletic/demanding game.

We walked away with a single trophy, albeit the UEFA cup, which will always live in my heart - being there to see Mick lift that massive trophy. But in all honesty we almost came away with nothing that season.

The big prize this season is promotion back to the PL, and whereas of course I'm disappointed with our exit from the FA cup, I'd rather that happen and it helped us navigate our way to promotion.

What the hell does that even mean? Seeing Ipswich win the FA cup would mean the absolute world to me. You saying that wouldn’t mean as much as finishing 16th in the PL?!

We weren't going to win the FA Cup this year though. However, we do have a good chance of promotion and not having a fixture pile up is important in that regard.

We would then have a more realistic chance of winning the FA Cup next year.

It's really not hard to see that not being in the draw is a good thing for the club long term.

I don’t think that suggesting somebody who is clearly unhappy that he might wish to consider alternative entertainment, including Mrs Cs favourite tv programme, is quite the same as calling somebody an ‘absolute clown’.

He would not have said that to my face. And I’m waiting for his apology.

Two quick points

1 - I would call you a clown to your face
2 - no apology is forthcoming

Although annoyed and emotion about it last night, I still can’t believe the lack of ambition to progress in this comp. As I said yesterday, Cov were a minute away from making the FA cup final and they were / are a champ side. No game for 8 days, just play your strongest team and try to win the game.

Gather round, kids, and let me tell you about the time we went to a stadium that used to be far more symbolic to watch us get monstered 7-0 by Man City playing at half-speed.

I dunno man, I know where you're coming from, but these just aren't the days for those sorts of stories. Maybe at some stage if football somehow turns back into a more level playing field then those sorts of things could happen again, but in the meantime, there's clearly a strategic approach to our season and it shouldn't involve stacking our chips on the chance that we catch superteams on off-days in the final stages of the cup, when there's other aims to play for. Maybe it's because I wasn't around for the years where we won stuff, but it feels to me like there's been plenty of "moments" over the last couple of years without pipe dreams about the way the cup used to be.

And yet Coventry didn't make the final and their league season imploded and they missed out on the play offs. Given we're chasing automatic promotion, would you take us falling away and scrapping for 6th for a glorious semi-final defeat? I don't think I would. And that's assuming we get a kind enough draw to get to the semis.

Coventry's cup run was the best thing that happened to us in the run in. They had a fixture overload and looked a tired team towards the end of our 2-1 win.

You're missing the point.

It's not about not having a game for 8 days, it's about not having 4 vital league games in 10 or less days given another league match (Leicester) would have to be moved and we would have 3 games in hand on the top two.

The double cancellation of the Pompey game is the cause of the issues.

They were running on fumes for about 5 or 6 games at the end of that season. The cup run killed them.

Something which is totally out of our control so not really relevant to what I said. It would be pretty bad for us though.

I find it incredible that you seem to be prioritising a cup run with an absolutely miniscule chance of success with promotion to the PL.

Promotion to the PL where our only aim is to finish 17th and hope not to get slapped every week, wow what a prospect. Guess what we won’t give a toss about the cups then because we are prioritising trying to stay in the league, great. So we are really only ever entering one competition that we want to do well in but have zero % chance of winning. Fantastic.

We just have different ideas of priorities. As a fan of Ipswich I want us to try our hardest in the league and the FA cup, as both are very important in my eyes. That’s it.
