Losing 6-3 at home with a bent ref! Hahaha! (n/t) on 17:18 - Feb 20 by StokieBlue
I've been told today on here today that you can't call them lies.
Just a difference of opinion.
State of the world.
SB
you were told that being able to tell the difference between a lie and a different opinion is a very important intellectual skill that people tend to lose when they think their own views are unchallengeable.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

That's a Trumpesque rewriting of what happened.
Well done.

Yep, but they don't. Normally though there isn't a President trying to be a Dictator.
The constitution wasn't built for a Trump style leader and it shows.
The import word in your first sentence being "trying". This, plus the climbdown over Greenland reinforces the belief that the USA is still a functioning democracy. As much as Tump wishes it wasn't.

There is though something wrong with a system which has meant that it has taken so long for this judgment to be reached.
In a properly functioning constitution, this verdict should have been reached before the tariffs came into force.
In the meantime, Trump has reeked havoc on the rest of world, although I have a feeling there may be some tariffs he has imposed which are not affected by this judgment.

Building on my last paragraph.
Stephan Becker – leading international trade attorney at Pillsbury in Washington DC – underscores that while today’s decision invalidates many of the tariffs under IEEPA, other levies have been imposed under other legal authorities that expressly grant Donald Trump the ability to do so. He notes that these include Section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act and Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act.
The former authorizes the imposition of tariffs for national security reasons, while the latter allows duties to compel other countries to change policies unfair to US exports.
“Those existing tariffs will not be affected by the Court’s decision. To put it simply, tariffs will remain a central element of the administration’s foreign policy even after today’s judgment,” Becker said.
Basil Woodd-Walker, disputes and investigations partner at global law firm Simmons & Simmon said he can just switch focus from the blanket “liberation day” reciprocal tariffs he opposed on dozens of countries to sectoral tariffs.
“Most commentators had expected the supreme court to strike down Trump’s IEEPA tariffs. But President Trump has made it clear that he is not going to abandon his international trade policy, and will find other ways to implement it,” he said. “The US administration may pivot to other tariff regimes or trade barriers to replace the lost income.”

It’s on life support i’d say.
And entirely corrupt if this is true

In layman’s language - how does the Supreme Court work over there? I’ve read about conservative judges being appointed etc etc. is that the same over here?
How on earth in a country where they think of themselves the land of the free can one person have the power to appoint who they please? Or is that the same here?
Its not the same here. We have an independent commission which seeks to appoint on merit, with a largely transparent process, and proper separation of powers.

He might pay someone else to though.
On a serious, less bleak note, could this be the Yanks waking up to how close they've tilted towards fascism?
Maybe Andrew's arrest and Starmer standing up to Trump has emboldened a few?
Tho it's worth noting the SC hasn't said tariffs are wrong per se, just that Trump was exceeding the limits of the law he used to impose them. It's a technical denial, not one on principle.

Not quite “enemies of the people”, but he has accused the judges who ruled against him as “a disgrace to the nation”
“They’re just being fools and lapdogs for the Rinos [Republicans in name only] and the radical left Democrats, and not that they should have anything at all to do with it,” Trump said. “They’re very unpatriotic and disloyal to our constitution.”
Referring to Barrett and Gorsuch, he described them as “an embarrassment to their families” and said they were “barely” invited to the State of the Union address next week.
And he praised those 3 judges who supported him. Good judges, remember who put you here..
Finally saying he’ll impose even more tariffs than he already had. A petulant child.
