Returning UK nationals from UAE 12:51 - Mar 2 with 3783 viewsle2blue

See that limited flights have restarted from Abu Dhabi, and mass repatriation is being planned for UK nationals returning from the Middle East. For those tax exiles, I trust that we're deploying HMRC to recover funds. They should also be asked to make social media posts about how grateful they are to be home!

It's not any kind of legal basis, more a moral one. The basis being that they're not paying taxes to the UK and have moved somewhere volatile, with the tax dodge a big part of it. Now that volatility has come to pass and they need help from the country where they're no longer paying taxes.

Doesn't work like that, and it shouldn't necessarily, but it's quite annoying considering the reasoning a lot of people go out there in the first place.

State of this honestly.

Genuinely pathetic and stinks of the politics of envy.

Did it give you a thrill? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper: “This is deeply stressful obviously for people because we’re talking about a lot of people who are holidaymakers, who were transit passengers just passing through or people on business visits to the region and who we want to make sure can get safely home.”

One of my daughter's is cabin crew and often flies these routes. Thankfully not this week.

Well said.

The point scoring state of this thread and glee because some citizens that are working or living abroad might potentially be in harms way. Just because every single person that makes a career or country choice either temporarily or permanently is one of those types that they have in their head. Not that surprised though.

That mask is slipping quite regularly again now.

Always a useful reminder for those who haven’t been party to this individual’s behaviour over the last fifteen years or so.

Alternatively, people are employing humour.

Yes it maybe based on some people that are stuck happen to also be people that voted so that it made it much more difficult for poorer working class types to make a career and country choice.

A Great British tradition, enjoying schadenfreude based humour.*

*Yes I know, that was meant to be humorous as well.

You believe it’s a moral arguement, to leave British people stranded in the Middle East as war is breaking out?

You have then mentioned tax being the basis in which the decision should be made. So would a wealthy person who pays substantial tax in the UK and is visiting the Middle East for a business meeting be allowed assistance to return back to the UK, but a person who works as cabin crew for emirates and is based out of Dubai and not paying tax not be entitled to assistance?

There is no logic in what you have said.

There is far less, possibly zero, logic in your reply.

At no point is leaving people behind mentioned.
At no point is deciding who to return based on their tax status.

Complete nonsense as per...

As soon as they land on UK soil will they be liable to UK taxes? Or is there some loophole where it won’t count if they have to return home?

You have to spend at least 183 days in the UK per tax year to be liable to pay tax

I have absolutely no time for people that talk trash about the UK once they’ve left - particularly like horse face Oakshott who use their public platform to do so.

99% of the expats I’ve come across though in the UAE are there because they wanted to make a better life for themselves or more often, were sent there by their company. Ordinary people like you and I mostly.

And while I wouldn’t describe anybody else’s life as crappy, each to their own, some of the comments don’t paint a very “happy” picture either. Having a laugh at holiday makers and families getting caught in drone attacks is pretty disgusting in anybody’s book.

Nah, it just reflects the ‘tribe’ people are in. The op is referencing people like Tice and Oakenshot who have bailed to Dubai at least partly for tax reasons. The media post mention is because these people have been making social media posts (and writing in the media) from Dubai talking down the UK. That seem fairly obvious to me.

I don’t believe it’s got anything to do with people on here wanting people passing through the region to suffer and it seems disingenuous to suggest that’s what people are doing. The humour is around the irony of sh*tstirrers now finding the boot is on the other foot.

And expecting tax exiles to contribute is hardly novel or outrageous either. Ed Davey called for that yesterday in parliament (edit - ah, as shown already above).

No need for people to get the hump over some of us laughing about the irony of the situation in some cases. ☺️

I have it on good authority that, given the state of the public finances, Rachel Reeves is planning to follow the US model and tax British citizens wherever they live in the World.
