| Milwall hit with two separate FA charges this week 16:59 - Mar 12 with 3210 views | Illinoisblue | For chanting “South London sp*****s, we know what you are.” at Palace and Charlton fans this season. Talk of a possible ground closure. Seems like a 6 point deduction would be a more appropriate punishment. | |

Bit of a strange one, as although both the Old Den and New Den are south of the river, the area or district of Millwall is on the Isle of Dogs, which is north of the river.

Millwall as an area is on the isle of dogs, which is north of the river. Millwall as a club is south east in Surrey Quays

That's because it was/is a medical term that got turned into an insult. This goes for most of these terms (idiot, moron etc.) But that particular word hasn't been OK to say for decades so you're a bit behind the times here.

Yes, I think idiot and moron were both from fairly generic ancient greek adjectives relating to stupidity. These were adopted in a medical way quite some time ago, but again I think just relating to low intelligence, and hence not specifically relating to one particular condition. I think the fact that these words were so generic in origin and in application means that they have never been considered especially cruel, and certainly not discriminatory against a specific group with a specific condition. On the other hand, the 's' word being referred to here was formerly used in good faith in relation to a particular condition, before it was adopted by those with less positive intent. As many of us know, it was sadly commonplace several decades ago to mock people with this condition in a way that to any reasonable adult seems incomprehensibly cruel. Doubtless there are some who are a bit behind the times, and still might use the term in an unthinking way that maybe does not /intend/ any harm without realising how offensive it is, but it really does belong well and truly in the past. The mere fact that the general population have used and abused a medical term for malign reasons to such an extent that the very charity which supports people with the condition has had to change its name probably tells us all we need to know about (a) the acceptability of the term in the 21st century, and (b) the meanness of which most of us are capable if we unthinkingly go along with the crowd, be that a football crowd, some blokes in a pub, or kids in a playground. Sometimes we're asked to dance on the head of a pin linguistically and hyper-correct in order not to offend anybody. This is not one of those times. It's just a really nasty term.

It's deemed " not politically correct ". Originally it was a perfectly acceptable term. As per usual the original meaning got debased. Rather in the way the N****R word has. Though curiously a lot of Rap and Hip Hop artists use it about 20/30 times on some of their tracks!

Not sure about this. You need to show some workings as to how you've come to this conclusion.

Agree, I doubt there will be any ground closure. However, putting out a statement condemning anything and saying they will ban fans is easy done. They can't exactly say nothing, or risk attracting a harsher punishment. £35,000 fine and a warning would be my bet.

And now, as an adult, can you imagine how being called a "Joey" all the time and having people pull faces and flail their arms about at them felt to people with Cerebral Palsy, pretty much any visibility at the time? If people with CP don't want us to use the "S" word, which is part of the medical diagnosis of some of them, as a catch-all insult, why not just say "OK", learn from it, and move on?

You have a pair of blokes discussing the political correctness of not being able to use the S word, then throwing in the N word for good measure, and this being strange times they live in as a result of these restrictions on their vocabulary. They’re not behind the times as has been suggested earlier in the thread. It’s wilful. Everyone is free to do what they want but I fail to understand why these people are engaged with on here any longer given this behaviour has been evident for many many years now.

Even at the time it was widely condemned by adults. Unfortunately it went viral around schools all over the country. It got even worse when his friend Ernie also appeared on Blue Peter and the ridicules became more commonplace. Ashamed to say I used to do it at school too. I'm really not surprised people with CP don't want us to use the 'S' word, it's always been used as a substitute for calling someone a tw*t.

That particular word has been used as a racial slur since the middle of the 18th century so I'm not sure your argument really stacks up, now does it?
