| Going veggie 20:51 - Mar 16 with 3156 views | bluelagos | At home, no meat in the kitchen so see how it goes. Suspect I might crack the first time I smell bacon...but if you don't try. Top recipes veggie people please. Got a load of quorn to try and make into something tasty... | |
| | |
| Going veggie on 13:06 - Mar 17 with 630 views | FBI | Oh yeah, the Quorn pieces take a marinade really well. Soak them in Dark Soy Sauce, Balsamic Vinegar, powdered ginger and a sprinkling of chili flakes. Stir fry with spring onions, garlic, julienne carrots, mushrooms and red pepper on a bed of noodles and dress with sweet chili sauce. Phwoar. Side note: As a vegetarian since 1988 I sometimes hear people asking why I eat Quorn if I don't want to eat meat and that it's nothing like the real thing. I answer that 1. I don't want to eat the reheated bits of a corpse (sorry, TMI) and that it doesn't really replicate meat; rather I see it as replacing it. And the fake bacon is nothing like but blooming lovely. all the same even if it does make your burps smell of Frazzles! | |

| Going veggie on 21:24 - Mar 16 by GlasgowBlue | Good luck. I went veggie three years ago after my Mrs took me to a vegetarian restaurant against my wishes. She was already one year meat free. I thought I would crack, but I haven't been tempted once. I'm practically vegan in my diet now but vegan cheese is minging and the sinless eggs are awful otherwise I'd be on a completely plant based diet.. |
I make you right about vegan cheese. There was a period where I was trying loads through work as brands were looking for investment. While some are better than others, I've tried so many and never tasted anything above a 5/10. For me its the 1 major compromise when I only ate a vegan diet, but I guess that depends on how much you like cheese (and I love it). I'm pretty much veggie now, I probably eat meat once or twice a week on average. My motivations are purely selfish and for health reasons, although the environmental impact and moral side of it is a factor. Certain foods make me feel dreadful, and I've never felt better that I do since cutting down meat (and some other things). Way more energy and mental clarity. Eating red meat and other fatty foods ruins me completely, I feel hungover afterwards now. Appreciate not everyone is like that but its just not worth it for me.

Ahhh, but how can you resist a really good steak? Medium rare, hanging over the plate, blood and gravy oozing out of it, fried onions and a mound of chips, maybe a few mushrooms? Makes the world a better place, albeit not for the cow! Now correct me if I’m wrong, biology not being my greatest strength, but are not human beings along with bears and pigs designed to eat meat and veg? Omnivores with multi purpose teeth? Ditch the fake bacon and go for the real thing. Fresh crusty bread (not that poverty pap with trill in it), a slather of good quality proper butter with a proud mound of bacon (fat removed - hate that). Food of the gods. You’ll be much happier than your hair shirt, imitation, chemicalised stuff and you’ll thank me for it. [Post edited 17 Mar 14:45]

| Going veggie on 05:48 - Mar 17 by Hong_Kong_Bluey | Something I've wondered out loud and not sure why I'm airing it here......... but here goes....... In the same way a steak restaurant will put on a vegetarian dish or two to be fair to the people who choose to live that way. Should a vegetarian restaurant not put a meat dish or two on the menu for the people who choose to live their life that way? |
It's such a strange argument.

Bit odd isn't it? The clue is in the name. Its like expecting your local curry house to do you a ham, egg & chips.

Didn’t feel right to keep eating meat - not because of the taste, but because of ethical and environmental reasons. As above, BBC Good Food and Meera Sodha are your best friends. Decent burger stand in the Fan Zone before games too!

It makes the world a far worse place, and not just for the cow. Meat and dairy production account for a significant chunk of greenhouse emissions and much of the deforestation of the Amazon is a result of grazing or clearing space to grow crops to feed cattle. The level of meat and dairy consumption in modern society just isn't sustainable, it's not compatible at all with preventing the worst of the climate crisis. It's also a bit barbaric if we're honest. Mass rearing animals in quite unpleasant conditions just so we can slaughter them and eat their flesh. And although we're omnivores, we can survive very healthily on a plant based diet. Meat used to account for a small proportion of the human diet but modern mass farming and the explosion of meat eating has shown we aren't that well adapted for eating lots of meat. High levels of meat consumption cause all sorts of health problems (bowel cancer, increased risk of other cancers, heart disease). So there's lots of reasons to not eat meat at all or to at least drastically reduce meat consumption, but really only one reason to eat meat, which is that people like the taste of it.

“ but really only one reason to eat meat, which is that people like the taste of it” Been here many times before, and I realise I’m in a minority, but to reiterate - for those of us living with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease, an auto-immune illness, ie Crohns or Ulcerative Colitis) in flare up, there is every good reason - ie lean meat, fish, eggs (+ for me, gluten free tapioca, oat & corn starch + a bit of basil & a small stalkless spinach leaf) are the only things that your body will retain for more than 10 minutes max … Tho when in remission I was down to meat or fish only twice a week. There are half a million people in the UK living with these conditions (nb - net to be confused with IBS - irritable bowel syndrome, tho they may have some similar symptoms). https://www.bsg.org.uk/news/ib

I respect that's your experience and the advice you've been given but both the NHS and Crohn's UK say that you can follow a vegetarian or vegan diet with Crohn's, even during a flare up. That might not be the case for everyone but likewise your experience is probably not identical to the other 500k experiencing those conditions.

I agree with what you mentioned in your post - adding to your post recent studies have found that the average pig have the intelligence of a 3 year old human child. Taking that into account, it seems complete logical that a pig processes the emotional intelligence to be realise what will happen to it at a slaughter house - its final minutes must be complete hell. Saying that, I still eat pork - does that make me a hypocrite or lacking in morality? Very probably, yes. Going further I don’t think anyone can describe themselves as an animal lover if they eat meat. A dog lover, yes. A cat lover, yes - but not an animal lover.

I eat meat, albeit not very often and mostly seafood, but I never found steak all that. Had steak in some amazing restaurants here and overseas but still it just never wowed me. Now fresh prawns and bay bugs off the coast of Cairns...

Depends how bad the flare is. Can be anywhere along the range from just a few pinheads of blood a few times a week to cupfuls of mucous & haemorrhaging daily. Yes can be mostly vegan at the lower end (sorry!) tho dietitans always advise variety is better as you’re not absorbing everything you need anyway, but definitely not at the severe end. Not just me, there’ve been many really interesting discussions on Reddit which tho I’m not a member, have found surprisingly good. Yes, every body is different, many have these conditions worse than me & have arrived at the same conclusion re how to help control their flares, along with new or increased meds, surgery etc. Anyone else with same condition may not be aware that spray or drops in the mouth vits & mins that bypass the digestive tract are now available (recommended by dietitian & another qualified health professional) - incredibly useful. Feel free to PM me for sources if interested.

Strange - I’m not a huge fan of prawns and I never tend to feel brilliant afterwards if I eat them so I avoid. We are all different. Back to steak, finding good steak in this country is difficult so it’s a rare treat. France, Germany - better.

Bit harsh to want to starve the South Americans by denying them a living. Anyway, how do you know plants don’t have feelings too? Last year I grew some potatoes. The ones I greeted each morning grew better than the ones I ignored. Proof! Just because carrots don’t scream when you rip them out of the ground doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings or in their own subterranean world they aren’t silently shouting ‘freedom!!’

That would be tricky given their lack of a central nervous system. Science is quite advanced these days, I would imagine we'd know if carrots were sentient at this point.

But you don’t actually know. You need to open your mind to the possibilities and give the little guys a break. Otherwise you might find one day if they rebel, you will battered to death by a vengeful army of sprouts, swedes, sweet corn, green stuff and carrots. They’re stalking you…….
