| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement 08:02 - Mar 25 with 7156 views | AlpineBlue | So people saying we are all being dramatic. If I wear my Town shirt somewhere in the UK today, it feels like I am advertising myself as a Reform supporter. I hope the club and sponsors understand that I and my family will not be buying and Ipswich Town replica shirts next season. I'd be surprised we are alone in this. | | | | |

If you're going about your business in an Ipswich shirt you are not associated with a horrifically racist organisation and anyone who says you are is winding you up (quite successfully, it seems).

Think you're being a bit naive there Sitters, many football-focused people probably don't realise how non-football people already look upon us as being slightly deranged, so any more excuse for them to look down on us even more is not welcome, IMHO...

| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement on 11:08 - Mar 25 by NewcyBlue | Ah, you think it was some sort of clever stunt they pulled, filming a political party broadcast without the clubs permission. Carry on Dollers… |
The club clearly gave permission when they turned up, but has stated they didn't know it was Reform when it was booked. So why didn't Reform ask well in advance? Because they know it's easier to create something if they just turn up. And then if they get refused entry they use that to create publicity, saying once again the establishment is trying to bar them etc. Either way they win. Farage didn't just turn up for a tour because he's interested in the history of ITFC. He turned up with his social media team and pre-bought shirts with his name on. Of course it was a stunt!

| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement on 11:02 - Mar 25 by The_Flashing_Smile | I would explain that Reform are very good at stunts and using them to divide people - and this is actually what they've done. The club have been very naive - but that doesn't then follow that they support racism. You could show your kids all the positive influences and initiatives the club have already been involved in. I don't think this one mistake should outweight all them. |
The club have been either hopelessly naive or disgracefully complicit, not sure yet because of weak non-statements from the club and worrying suggestions in other publications. I think you are being hopelessly naive though. The club have fostered an association with Farage, possibly by naivety or sheer incompetence, they've not distanced themselves from it at all. It's all good saying "I don't think this one mistake should outweight all them", but the club have not even acknowledged a mistake was made. I think it's a shame. They've tarnished and shamed all the good work and initiatives. We held football sessions for Asylum seekers, that's entirely outweighed by this. It spots in the face of everyone involved in that initiative. They've done the same to Rainbow Tractors too.

It is now becoming evident that this was not just a club tour booking but those higher up the club rolled out the red carpet for them. Reform run on a ticket of racism, xenophobia, bigotry, islamaphobia and there's some homophobia thrown in as well, not to mention some of the other scummy policies they promote such as removing us from the ECHR and dismantling the NHS. Regardless of if it is directly or indirectly, the club now has association with these scumbags. I don't find racism or an association with it a laughing matter. If you are able to just laugh it off as a "wind up" then perhaps that says more about you than you would like it to.

| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement on 11:05 - Mar 25 by The_Flashing_Smile | Equally I don't think people determin what music I like when I walk around with Ed Sheeran's tour written on the front of my Ipswich shirt. It would be barmy for anyone, whether they knew me or not, to assume that meant I liked his music. |
I'm usually in agreement with a lot of your posts and sympathetic when there's a bit of a pile-on, but can't help but feel you're so wide of the mark with this For me, it's not about people thinking that I would be a Reform supporter, it's that it will invite the comments around Reform, which is quite simply something I don't want to entertain. Before today, wearing a town shirt invited a lot of positive comments about our past and how nice it is to see us doing well again. Maybe a little bit of "bants" about Ed Sheeran. But for the immediate future the conversation is obviously going to be about Reform, and that's something I simply can't be arsed with | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement on 11:08 - Mar 25 by Ewan_Oozami | You said somewhere else that you didn't care about politics, that's why you can't see that what Farage did on Monday has tainted the ITFC brand to the point where: 1. People who don't support Farage are really torn as to whether they wear/buy ITFC merch 2. People who do support Farage will be even prouder to wear/buy ITFC merch 3. People (like you) who say they don't care and will wear ITFC merch anyway will be lumped in with 2. by non-football people who see you wearing it - whether you like it or not. |
This is the thing. Whether or not you think we're stupid for it, a whole lot of fans are not wanting to wear or buy ITFC merch at the moment. Just from a pragmatic point, that's damaging for our club. Whatever you think of Farage that should bother you as an ITFC fan. Which is why the club should never have even slightly put themselves in the position where they appeared to be supporting ANY political party, and why a politically neutral (in actions, not just words) stance is so important.

I would be very surprised if people start to walk up and start to talk reform just because of the shirt, majority of the posts I have seen have been football supporters of other clubs using the opportunity to wind up Town supporters. I doubt anyone with with significant intelligence genuinely thinks this is anything more than a really badly thought through PR stunt.

Wearing a football shirt has always been a tribal statement and does not have a political background. Fabio Wardly and Ed Sheeran both wear our colours and don't state they support Reform. We need to move on from this Farage fiasco.

I don't think I've been naive, I've just tried to stick to the actual facts we know. And no, I don't think this one negative outweighs all the positives. Why do negatives weigh more than positives, let alone ONE negative versus very many positives? We haven't hosted a rally for Reform, we've stupidly allowed Farage to have a tour with his social media team. Which he paid for (and even paid for the photo-op shirts).

| The crux of the problem? To wear a Town shirt is now a political statement on 09:49 - Mar 25 by Ryorry | You really don’t understand, particularly how it is for those of us living far away from E Anglia. Round here in rural North Yorkshire where 99.9% of the population know nothing about ITFC except that I’m a big fan who won’t stop for the usual chat on a match day when we’re about to k/o and I need to hurry back from walking the mutt - my club, and myself by association, are now linked with a racist, xenophobic, intolerant, inflammatory, despicable man, who only a tiny minority round here have any time for (from chats at polling stations and elsewhere). Embarrassing, and very sad - I’ve previously always been proud to be a supporter of a club known for its family values. The only positive to be taken is that Ashton will eventually move on, while I’ll still be a supporter & then feel able to wear a Town shirt in public again round here. |
I live in Yorkshire, the office here has probably ten of us who are football fans. The hot topic this morning is York City's defeat last night. Not one mention of ITFC and the visit.

The only facts we know are the pictures taken by Farage's media team. That they paid under a different name and the club was unaware is not an established fact. It's part of the information they drop fed out early on, but then walked away from when they actually made an official statement. I also didn't say they outweighed every positive, but I gave a clear example where the hypocrisy of hosting Reform/Farage does, the football for Asylum Seekers campaign they did previously. You can't claim to support that group while hosting Farage and act like nothing happened.
