| Country/IP blocking on TWTD 10:42 - Mar 27 with 4482 views | GavTWTD | Our sister site FansNetwork has been hit by a large number of bots from abroad. At the moment it's specifically China, Singapore, Russia and Vietnam. All using tens of thousands of different IP addresses generating hundreds of thousands of page views. On TWTD we've always blocked Russia but it make sense to block the others too. India and Pakistan are likely to be included too, maybe Brazil. Just checked Vietnam have used over 200,000 IP addresses in the last 24hrs. If you're affected by this then we can override this for specific IP addresses but won't be able to if you're IP is dynamic. We'll start to do this next week. Get in touch please if this affects you or are in any of the countries listed. Added to football category for wider readership. | |

| Country/IP blocking on TWTD on 10:47 - Mar 27 with 3876 views | TheMoralMajority | I'm sure you are aware, but just in case. I also run a website and get regularly bot-attacked. Unfortunately it turns into whack-a-mole as you block one territory, then a few days later they just spin up servers in a different territory. CloudFlare has a free-tier and allows you to enable "under-attack" mode. It is not ideal, as it puts a capture challenge (not one of the puzzle solving ones, just a 'please wait...' then click the box one), and I think it messes with SEO, but I have found that enabling it and disabling it when I am/am not under attack has been a far less frustrating experience than whacking moles, and has kept my SEO fairly solid. They also let you set rules for specific territories to show the challenge to, if you don't want to blanket challenge the whole site, but I've just found the "attack mode" switch a lot less labour intensive. I should ban all foreigners really... ... ... Thanks. I'd rather not go that far but I have been surprised by the spread of IPs over territories. Another 1000 Vietnamese IPs since I wrote the OP. This is a first step though and I'll see how it develops. | |

You've slightly conflated two different things Cloudflare does there but the point remains, using a smart WAF is much more efficient than geoblocking IPs, which will only block bot and other bad actors who can't afford a VPN

Brazil might be blocked yes. We can unblock a single IP but if you get around it another way that would0 be good.

Definitely look into smart WAF. Cloudflare is a must to block this kind of traffic.

Have you seen a significant increase in bots since Ashton-gate? It's obvious there's bot-swarms that follow anything Farage touches on X. Just wondering whether this place was catching some overspill?
