My son asked me if the club wants people like him 11:43 - Mar 28 with 7343 viewsBostonManorBlue

I've supported this club for nearly 50 years. My son is 13 and he's just getting to the age where following Town means something to him — not just the football, but belonging to something bigger. He's mixed race.

I'm not here to tell anyone how to vote or what to think about any politician. That's your business.

What I will say is that when my boy saw those photos this week, he asked me whether the club wanted people like him there. I didn't have a good answer.

I don't think most of us — on either side of this argument — want a single kid to feel that way about our club. That's not what Ipswich Town is. That's not what Portman Road is.

I don't care about Ashton's job. I don't care about the politics. I care that my son feels welcome at the ground, and right now he doesn't.

If you think this has all been an overreaction, I'd just ask you to hold that thought for a moment and consider that for some families it wasn't abstract — it was personal.

We've got a promotion to fight for. Let's do that together. But "together" has to mean everyone, including my boy.

Rules of TWTD Left edition.

Ask a question to a poster suggesting he's rascist

Receive answer from said poster, who couldn't be more clearer that he isnt.

Still call him racist anyway.

Rinse and repeat till boredom ensues.

I do wonder what the legal position is, with people constantly throwing these kind of acquisitions around whilst having ZERO proof apart from assumptions.

Im sure somebody can tell me.

You started a thread yesterday that I and others partook in politely and genuinely. Why not share the same courtesy and stop trying to play the victim in an imaginary witch hunt? It’s just rude.

Back to the OP rather than one poster's ego.....

I'm really sorry to see how your son is feeling. That's awful and shows the real impact that this week's events have had on a number of fans. The politics of the far right are abhorrent, they do not see people of colour, the LGBTQ+ community, or even women as being equals. Anyone downplaying this needs to put themselves in the shoes of fans like your son and try to understand how it feels for them to see Farage and Reform using Town as a promotional tool and Ashton being complicit in it.

Where has anyone called you a racist? And why are you desperate to derail this thread and make it all about you? Have a day off, you're embarrassing yourself.

Yeah it shouldn't be on here, I agree.

Ive been accused of everything these last few days, clearly not going to make it up.

Happy for Phil to remove me from this thread.

No one has said you shouldn't be on here, as far as I can see no one has reported you for abuse (although I do feel that you are abusing the OP by pursuing a personal agenda) and if anything I can see that on balance there is a reason to keep your posts visible on this thread. They emphasise to some extent the intolerant views some supporters feel and sober up the rest of us when it comes to realising the extent we need to combat divisive and prejudicial behaviour.

I didnt say that, I agreed that this thread shouldn't be overtaken by my comments, so I asked for them to be removed, not me to be removed.

And yes, I haven't been reported for abuse (as far as I believe, but its been a crazy time) as Ive never been specifically abusive to anyone.

I watched the second part of the BBC documentary series 'Rage Against The Regime' earlier in the week (on the grounds that if I didn't clear it from my watchlist soon it might no longer be relevant.) The first part was harrowing but this part starts with the story of Zeinab, a girl who just wants to watch her local team, Persopolis. Quite extraordinary the lengths she goes to and sad that they do not work. Rights don't come easily and can be lost all too quickly.

As the lads Dad I’d like to think you have the greatest influence over him compared to some pictures he may of seen.
Confirm and reassure him that the club made an error of judgement but since then there has been a huge overreaction. If you feel the need - show him the apology from the club. I’m confident he’ll be fine with your guidance.

Firstly I’m so sorry that you’ve been faced with that conversation, it’s an absolute disgrace that we’ve ended up here. I’d urge you so strongly to share this story with people at the club, it represents everything that this situation has caused and shows why so many people are so angry.

Also, anyone replying to this thread with anything other than sympathy for the situation, or by trying to make it about themselves, have a seriously hard look at yourself

How long has your son been attending games at Portman Road? Has he been made to feel welcome during this time?

I am sure your comment is well meaning but can you imagine feeling welcome somewhere for years and then one day the manager of the place says or does something that makes it very clear you are not welcome?

Until Mark Ashton makes a very clear statement that he is appalled by Reform's policies and that it was a massive personal mistake to foster a relationship with Farage, it should be Ashton who should be unwelcome. Unless he publically apologies for his "mistruths" about the incident afterwards as well, he should resign or be sacked as well.

EDIT: I meant to say, as far as I am concerned and as much as that matters, your boy is very welcome at my club and anyone who makes him feel unwelcome due to the colour of his skin is not.

I'm sure he'll reassure his lad that the majority of Town fans want him there, and that the hatred invited into our club was from an arrogant liar who used and abused his position and who will be out of the job before too long.

Hope you don't mind me chipping in. I will try and paint a perhaps slightly different perspective on things to some who have and will reply. " The Club " isn't just Mark Ashton, it isn't just the owners, in fact it isn't just any particular person or group of people, it's each and every supporter too. I think you will find 99% of these people will welcome him with open arms. Don't let the perceived misjudgement of the few, ruin his enjoyment. And I hope he has many years of enjoyment following the town!

Of course he is welcome in the ground. By the supporters and by the people on the pitch.

It’s his and your club. Not Ashton’s, Farage’s or any employee unless they are actually supporters or have a vested interest like Matt Holland.

What happened this week doesn’t change that one iota and nor should it. I think if or when you take him to Portman Road he will realise and know that.

Inclusivity and together are not throwaway words of the kind beloved by politicians. They are real thoughts and actions so your last paragraph is spot on.

The majority? You’re making out that there is people who will not welcome him there which is not true.

Can you understand why someone who advocates for xenophobic policies such as those of Reform would make anyone who feels at all different feel unwelcome? Of course, Ashton might not actually agree with Reform's xenophobic policies. However, he currently is making it look like he is a keen fan of them.

It’s incredibly sad reading that.

This is what makes me think Ashton has to go. Your son isn’t alone. The LGBT community, foreign born, mixed race and those married to/ loved ones of those groups are all affronted by this and affected.

Let alone any town fan with an ounce of integrity or conscience. All this talk of a laughable “silent majority” suggests that even if those upset are a minority, it’s not all a small one who can or should be ignored.

It also suggest the majority of our fanbase are not only silent, but appalling people too. The club should not be theirs alone. Bigots, racists and scum should be afraid to be themselves at football, not the rest of us.

We’ve had our differences Mullet but that’s the nail on the head for me. Completely agree.

Rainbow Tractors feeling like they have to put their Twitter account onto private because of the actions of our football club is nothing short of a f**king disgrace.

Yeah, I run the Rainbow Tractors and had to do that for my own mental wellbeing. The comments, and quote retweets I was getting was just too much. FB post also had to have comments limited to those who were long time followers too.

Am hoping I can go public again in time for Easter Mondays game, but we will see.

Has Ashton reached out to you, or otherwise reacted to your statement?

He certainly should, or this community thing is just lip service.
