Great game but quite annoying glitch where you could pull back on the joystick left and right to curl it top bins from the halfway line.
If you practiced enough you could do it with surprising regularity, much to my brothers disgust. |  |

Sensible Soccer is the obvious choice.
From early 3D days, then International Superstar Soccer 2000 on the N64 is hard to beat (The N64 version being far superior to the Playstation version is a hill I will die on).
I have always thought that Jack Taylor looks like the referees from that game, but it is such a niche reference, I have never bothered to mention it. Thanks for the opportunity! |  |

You would earn credits and be able to buy goalscoring cards or something like that? If you ran out of credits, you wouldn't get an opportunity in the next game to score.

Football Director and The Boss are proper old 'management' games. FD being somewhat brutal to play. |
Football Director was definitely brutal. The levels would range between easy, medium, hard but it would automatically go up a level if you won too many games and you'd end up playing opponents that had double the skill ratings of your side. You'd inevitably go on a 7 or 8 match losing run and it was only then, you had the option or opportunity to scale the difficulty level back down again. [Post edited 5 Apr 11:02]

Kick Off 2 was an early favourite for me, but was quickly overtaken by Sensible Soccer. On the management side, Premier Manager 2 took up a lot of my time before the inevitable Championship Manager 2 came along.
More randomly, I remember Striker, Manchester United Europe and Emlyn Hughes International Soccer.
There was also a game on the Spectrum called Super Soccer where you could bundle the opposing goalkeeper into the net and score lots of goals. [Post edited 5 Apr 11:12]

Until recently I remembered the first FIFA game on the Megadrive as being amazing, a huge step up on what came before it, but I recently played it on a modded console I have, and it is pretty underwhelming.
