Depressing. Not just the individual case (Shame on Waitrose) but the general tolerance of low level crime like we just have to accept it. Feels like managed decline.

It’s all so stupid. With any luck, someone will start a gofundme for him. Stores should taser all shoplifters anyway.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the feral youth wrecking havoc in Clapham yet?

As for old matey this country has gone bonkers.

Shoplift anything up to £199 you carry on mate,£200 you might get a visit from the police to the store.

Like I said it’s bonkers!

I could be wide of the mark here, but didn't the exact same thing that happened in Clapham happen a couple of years ago? Again in London, IIRC it was all organised over Tik-Tok then?

Are we skirting over the fact he'd specifically been warned not to do it before?

I can understand why the store doesn't want to encourage their staff getting injured (or worse) tackling petty theft. Still a damning statement on the state of crime in our country, but I don't think Waitrose could win here

The ‘big Tescos’ I use their security guards are often chasing people for pinching alcohol, one couple of young girls had over £700 in value on them, and their coats had specialised pockets stitched into the inside of their puffa coats,so they could swipe the bottles.

That's just a big advert for our feral yoof to ransack every Waitrose of its remaining overpriced Easter eggs now. The country's gone.

No. The country hasn't "gone".

There is a current issue, born of reduction in police funding, an unhelpful change to the law by the preivous government, and it being topic of the day.

60 years ago it was "mods and rockers fighting on brighton beach in broad daylight. Country's gone." What a load of to55.

At the risk of inflating this kind of non-story into something bigger.

and also not to belittle it. Such crowd shoplifting is not new - i saw an interesting interview with some locals who said that while it's horrid, kids of their (two different) generations did similar and had different names for it.

That said, to be a bystander, shopkeeper, or caught up in it, it can obviously be very scary.

I think it is partly a product of defunding youth projects, youth clubs, community facilities, sport groups etc, so a whole generation are growing up in a defunded state with little hope or trajectory.

I feel sorry for the shopkeeper. He had been warned. And, frankly, if I was working for a soulless multinational on near-minimum wage, I would in no way stop somebody shoplifting, it's more than my job or health is worth.

Anyway, most importantly from it all, the Clapham Waitrose is a short cycle from me and from the article I now know that the best days for me to go and shoplift are Mondays and Tuesdays when they have no security. Thank for the tipoff!

Agreed it’s a UK firm, and unlike most retailers they give their employees a share of profits. Should be more companies like that.

I remember being in London with my Uncle as a kid. At that time "steaming" was a thing. Small gangs of lads piling through the carriages (including the connecting doors) grabbing bags etc and then jumping off at the next stop.

A few weeks back on Friday evening, some guy did a "trick" on the self service machine.

He put all his items down (maybe even scanned them?), then told the employee he'd forgot something, went back in the shop, presumably waited until this young guy was sorting another customer out or had gone and then came back, picked the items up and walked out.

I know there was a couple of big red bull cans and a couple of other things so nothing too expensive. However, instead of just going away, I saw him, parked in a disabled spot, drinking one of the red bulls before he drove off.

I stupidly (as my wife has pointed out) shouted at him through the window and said, "you know that's so obvious". He basically said "so what?" and drove off.

I did inform the shop but I don't think they really cared.

I'm told the police won't even investigate moped thefts, talk about not nipping things in the bud

A lot of support for Reform over immigration, is really just disillusionment with the police letting a lot of crime fester historically and finding a scapegoat to blame.

You'll hear people say they don't 'feel safe' etc, people don't trust the police any more

The austerity programme has caused a big part of that

Supermarkets are enjoying record profits during a cost of living crisis and putting in a wealth of new "loss prevention" measures - if you see someone stealing food, no you didn't.

On balance of probabilities, and some anecdotal/online evidence, I suspect only a very small proportion of shoplifting is in the "I need it to survive" category carried out by otherwise honest and upstanding citizens. Certainly not when it's overpriced easter eggs or bottles of alcohol being swiped, often by organised gangs.

When I do see a scrawny single mother pocketing some nappies or a small carton of milk, sure, I can see myself looking the other way. Tescos can take that hit. But I don't think that's what we're talking about here.

Your idea of the worthy poor is irrelevant - especially when you lean into tropes about alcohol and 'organised gangs' and 'scrawny single monthers' (weird)

Ultimately, I don't care about the companies, they're making record profits during a cost of living crisis and are actively exploiting people.
If anyone has sympathy with the company and their needs over that of individual people, that's their prerogative.

Steal 4 bottles of wine and sell them to feed your kids, or directly steal a loaf of bread to feed them, it's whatever - in my personal values it's all one and the same.

I think many people are so far away from that being their personal reality that they find it hard to comprehend without resorting to over the top Robin Hood/Aladdin-esqe stereotypes about robbing "the rich" to give to "the poor" - but there are a lot of people out here struggling to survive day-to-day.

(sorry, just as a side comment...)

One that shocked me locally - our Tesco Metro now has these little clear plastic slidey cover things over things like pots of jam or large bags of chocolate. I think the idea is that you can't swipe the whole shelf in one go, but the fact that people are trying that is very revealing I think - it's not just booze or meat.

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
