Question on the penalty 21:22 - Apr 11 with 3105 viewsIllinoisblue

How was it described on Sky? The (English) commentator on the CBS coverage here didn’t even realize it was a penalty. Watching a scum vlog filmed from the other end, and the ref is trotting away from the incident when he suddenly stops and goes back to the scene of the crime. Did he get a nod or notification from the linesman? I’d have been foomin at a pen given us against us in that way. As it is, can’t stop laughing 😃😃😃

They would have been chatting through the mic/earpiece they wear. To be fair, it's a much better system than having the lino flag and the ref having to stop the game to chat to him.

Yep lino's call.

I don't think it would have been overturned with VAR. Soft but probably a pen. Taylor's head seemed to jolt so not sure if he was caught in the face. Didn't look like it but that made me wonder.

On Sky it took a while for them to realise. I saw the ref point at the spot and whistle and said "he's given a penalty" a while before the commentators appeared to realise it.

The Lino didn’t flag (it was flag across the chest in my day) but apparently told the ref via his earpiece to give it.

The co-commentator thought it definitely shouldn’t have been given.

Obviously Andy Hinchcliffe was saying it's not a penalty.

It's really soft, and quite frankly I don't like those penalties being given, but its the rules, and they're given so its tough luck.

After all the crying about officials recently, we got away with at least 2 decisions today. I thought the ref was cr@p and inconsistent but it won't get mentioned cos we won!

If you listen to Brenner on Radio Suffolk (thread below), he took a while to realise too. I think the Norfolk commentary got there quicker.

Really? Not sure about that.

At least if the Lino starts waving their flag in the air like they just don't care and then the ref goes over to have a chat with him, or they put the flag across their chest, you've got a bloody good idea of what is going on.

As this happened, I didn't know what had happened, and even the sky commentators took a little while to realise it was a pen, there was very little clarity in the way it happened.

Watching the footage at the time, it felt to me like the ref took a long look and weighed it up in his mind before giving it. He clearly blew and pointed at the spot (but from some distance away and the ball was near our area by then). I immediately said "He has given a penalty" because it was clearly signalled but commentators generally don't appear to have seen that. Listening on the Radio Norfolk commentary linked with Brenner's the co-commentator is clearly in the background repeatedly saying "he's given a penalty."

CBS buys the rights it’d just an EFL world feed and pretty sure they’re always in a studio so he’s just seeing what we see.

I know that but he was utterly baffled and had no clue what was going on… altho sounds like Sky were equally mystified.

New rule for football: games where commentators aren’t at the game should be marked as such on the broadcast. I mean it’s pretty easy to figure out but still annoying as fk.

Hinchcliffe was talking rubbish all game. Like when he reckoned Leif should have had a go with a free kick so far out that Roberto Carlos would have struggled.

Hinchcliffe talks rubbish all game, every game he’s involved in.

The man is an absolute bore. Sucks the life out of games with his constant drone about defensive discipline.

Unless it’s Bannon, Barry Bannon on the pitch and then he’s gushing in his praise. Odd.

That’s the issue studio commentators!

Watching it back I’ve got it in a similar bracket to the one that Stoke got awarded. Soft and would be annoyed if it went against you but can see why the officials gave it. Once he nicked the ball and the defender was committed, there is always a danger. Not too dissimilar from the one Kane got against the Dutch.

Not sure if that gets overturned or not really with VAR, think they might stay with the call (if there was indeed any contact at all). Definitely a case of Jack Taylor winning that for us, if there was an award like there used to be in under 13s football, he’s got the most improved player sewn up. Have been critical of him at times but a super solid season.

Don’t think Lino’s do that anymore for a penalty. Ref held his ear when awarding it. Norwich broke for the counter and were away until ref brought it back.

I can't believe there is any debate on this one. Its a stone wall penalty. The guy foot was so high and could be deemed as dangerous play. The only debate should be why it took the linesman to give it and not the ref straight away
