You cant grab people from behind in the area when they are clear of you.

The defender has held him back in the area.

How is that not a penalty?

More a pen than the Norwich one.

Doesn't matter, any foul in the area is a pen whether the player is near the ball or not.

He pulls him from behind and twists his body round. Hirst has to go down, as he has been pulled completely off balance. It doesn't have to be strong contact, if he unfairly pulls the player to the ground.

Pen for me.

I thought the ball was too far away from Hirst to make it a penalty but happy to be wrong

Can you point me to the rule that says the fouled player has to be playing the ball?

It was a clear penalty.

Wrapping your arms round a player and dragging him down is a foul. Simple as.

Have you seen what goes on at every corner these days?.

It was soft, but we'll take it.

I would say technically a pen for the pull back but very lucky to get those. I would say on balance that evens up the one not given in the other game.

Fair point. Hirst made the point well in his interview

Why? Because Egeli is crap and I thought the penalty was soft but was happy to take it?

It should *always* be a pen when a defender puts hands on/around a player in the box. Or defenders free kick if the other way. More of this please! It might stop happening then.

Before the ball is in play at corners it isn't a penalty which is why referees often blow up, talk to players and then get the corner taken.

There is an inherent advantage to the attacking side with the grappling at corners because a foul by the attacker is a free kick whereas one by the defender is a penalty. Often it is 6 of one and half a dozen of the other and the referee either ignores it or gives a the free kick.

So, yes, I have seen it. How is that relevant to a defender holding an attacking back in open play when the ball is in play? Or are you saying that, because of grappling at corners, the rules shouldn't be applied at all?
