Release - Burns (sadly), Townsend, Young, Chaplin, Clarke, Neil
Return to parent clubs - Kipre (but try and re sign), Azon, Cajuste, Akpom (will probably have to pay compensation to get out of permanent deal if promoted to PL)
Sell (S) or loan out (L) - Humphrey’s (S/L), Szmodics (S), Al-Hamadi (S), Ogbene (S), Hirst (S), Baggott (S/L), Johnson (S/L), Mehmeti (S/L), Muric (S)
What we need
Cover for Davis and Furnell, another centre half (Kipre?), another defensive central midfielder, box to box midfielder, two/three strikers
Current players who will need to step up if we are to survive
If promoted our recruitment must improve this time, no excuses! No more buying one season wonders from the championship. As Sunderland have proven this season, you can recruit good players from abroad and stay up!

There’s no chance we will choose to have Kipre, he’s just not good enough for that level. He has 3 good games then looks like a carthorse the next, way too many errors in his game to play at a higher level.

Bit harsh that. There's a reason Greaves, who most people like, couldn't get in the side for quite a long time. It's because Kipre was playing brilliantly, good on the ball and not giving strikers a sniff. I might be wrong here but I think he's got as many assists as Clarke and Philogene combined.
He's become more of a liability at times during the second half of the season and when he gets exposed it's really noticable. It's right Greaves now has the shirt back, but I wouldn't disregard Kipre completely. He's one of our stronger players generally, and we can't genuinely replace the whole squad if we go up. He'd be a bench defender I'd imagine.

I dont think either are good enough for the Prem.
Very few of our squad are. We either need 15 new players or a miracle if promoted.
We don’t have a single player that gets in the Spurs or West Ham side, that’s the reality.
We only have one (Mats) that’s even a conversation. Sinita of work to do for sure, which after previous spending will be interested, Evans ewe won’t have the scope to spend that much again.
Agree with your assessment mostly. Mehmeti is very technically good, and better than most you listed to step up, probably all of them except Philogene.
He’s not been great if late, but has the ability, and we don’t have many that do, so he’d be a keep for me.
We don’t have a striker at this level…, so two world class strikers required. Can we ask Brighton and Brentford to put their heads together and sign us a couple??
Brentford. THREE 20 goal forwards the last three seasons, all signed for less than we paid for players like Ogbenne, Muric, Sammie, Greaves, Clarke and a few more.
That’s the level.
If Ashton and McKenna do the recruitment again, it’s going to be a slog.

I think it's largely inevitable, very few teams survive in the PL with what took them up. There may be 3/4 who feature if we get there, some will undoubtedly leave. Whatever happens, the recruitment needs to be of our womens team standard in January. That might give us a sporting chance!

-1 for being a heartless bastard; & for appalling man management- sacking off almost the entire squad before we've even kicked a ball in the last two games of the regular season - great motivation that eh .
Sentiment needs to go out the window really. If we do go up, we all know the step up in class and quality in the EPL. The fact players have done a good job in the Championship should not be a consideration whether we keep them or not. It’s whether they can step up their game to be able to compete at that next level. Some of the displays this season, we’d get an absolute good hiding in the EPL, I just hope we’ve learnt our lessons from last season. However, before all that let’s get there first and then worry about that afterwards.

I actually think JG could make a decent premier league LB.
Probably better than Leif who lacks the physicality or positioning sense.
I would have totally agreed 6 weeks ago but on the ball in recent matches he has looked laboured and always on the back foot. Perhaps some of this is inconsistent back 4s and high lines etc.
I think Leif is incredibly dangerous in high positions but we often don't capitalise because Hirst and Azon aren't on the same wavelength. We often compound this by giving him no cover on the left flank.
I shared my view a couple of weeks ago and it remains unchanged:
Gk: NEW, Walton, Button RB: NEW, Furlong, Johnson CB: O'shea, Kipre CB: NEW, Greaves LB: Davis, NEW CM: Matusiwa, NEW CM: NEW, Nunez, Taylor RW: NEW, Burns, McAteer AM: NEW, Mehmeti, SWE LW: Philogene, Clarke ST: NEW, NEW, Hirst
There has to be a bit of a balance between clear out and consistency. We need a lot of new players in the starting line up, and we need them to hit the ground running. But having a bit of a sense of consistency in the squad will be important, if nothing else for the fans.
Plus, who would ever choose to join a team as the third choice striker?

Although we lost a handful of player prior to the start of this season I was under the impression that many of these players were brought in not just to replace the ones that left but to be much better and that we have a squad that only needed a couple of purchases and maybe a couple of loans to turn them into a team capable of holding their own in the Premier League. The reason being that when we got the double promotion it was unexpected and a few players apart weren't ready for PL football and so it proved. But the situation is that Akpom, Azon, Cajuste, Neil,Cipre and Szmodics have all had pretty underwhelming seasons. I suppose of those Cipre and Azon have been fair to middling. then you have players like Baggott and all those out on loan plus Burns and Young who will no doubt be finished at the end of this season. So we will need extra cover along the back line, another midfielder, a winger and a centre forward. Totalling around six or seven players.

As much as I agree that we will need upgrades, the past two seasons of a high turnover has helped and hindered us in equal measure. I would hope we supplement what we have with some real quality, rather than trying to replace most of the squad again.

Exactly my thinking. Of the 8 out on loan, I only see Slicker returning, as 3rd choice keeper, with Button's one year deal expiring. Young, Townsend, Neil and Burns will also be at the end of their contracts. Kipre's loan has an option for us to buy, but worryingly the loans of non-performing Cajutse, Akpom and Azon all apparently contain obligations to buy if we get promoted. Anyone know where we can get two good strikers?

That would be fine if we had something getting towards a PL starting XI in the current squad, but personally I don’t think we are anywhere close.
It’ll need an overhaul with significantly improved performance from the recruitment team compared to the past couple of years. You’d hope the list of targets would be very well developed at this point.

Azon's is a straight loan, no obligation or even option included.
It's a bit premature and disrespectful to key members of the current squad to be talking about a clear out in the summer when this season isn't over yet and we have two massive games to come.

Happens at all clubs every year. Certainly hope the leadership are well advanced in their thinking.

I'm sure they will but I doubt they'll be publicly telling everyone they're going to bin off Wes Burns when we might need him to make a big contribution this week.

Why would you get rid of Townsend, when wanting cover for Davis? He looked pretty capable when standing in last season. The only reason he's missed out this time is injury (a single major one, not multiple niggles).
Likewise Ogbene has looked pretty sharp while out on loan, after recovering from an injury.
The defence is working well (joint lowest goals conceded), do we want to risk breaking that up?

I can't see Slicker wanting to come and be 3rd choice again, he's had a full season of 1st team football, and has largely impressed in a team still in with a shout of the Play-Offs. He's also earned a full Scotland cap, he'll have been very poorly advised in my eyes if he comes back here and settles as 3rd choice. I think we'll extend Button's contract, low cost, low hassle 3rd choice who helps on the coaching side.
There was lots of talk on here yesterday about the loans, seems the general understanding is Cajuste, Kipre and Akpom are obligations to purchase upon promotion. There is no agreements or options on Azon.

Not sure you've said loads that's too controversial tbh, although I disagree with a few of the suggestions. Probably the words 'clear out' are a bit disrespectful.
There will certainly be plenty of players leaving though, not least there's a number out of contract. Young, Townsend, Burns, Chaplin, Harry Clarke, Button plus the loanees Azon & Neil. Then those in contract who will almost certainly move on: Szmodics, Muric, Al-Hamadi, Ogbene, Humphreys, Baggott.
That's 14 right there, and I can't see any of them here next season (albeit most aren't currently either).
