Hopefully this is just a case of me worrying too much but it has crossed my mind before that some players may not be incentivised to win promotion as they know that they would get jettisoned if we go up. I very much hope the club have promised every member of the squad a very healthy win bonus for Saturday as a standalone game to counter this. As win and we get £150m+ lose and we are in the lottery of play offs.

That is a total non issue.

Most players would get a huge pay rise if we go up and I'm sure they'd get a promotion bonus too

It is possible in some instances, but I can't think of any individuals in our squad where it would apply especially. Most of those involved are contracted beyond this season and stand to gain handsomely financially if we go up, and being the professional sportspeople they are will want that sense of pride and achievement.

I was at St Mary's on Tuesday, we certainly didn't look like a group that doesn't want promotion.

Even if players were to be moved on, having a promotion on their CV will do them no harm when negotiating contracts . Honestly thats the least of our worries on Saturday.

Do you not think 'promotion winner' on the CV is a good thing?

Didn’t the club pay out 17 million in bonuses last time we went up? That seemed a huge amount at the time albeit spread across non-playing staff, too.

I hope not.

They will be incentivised at the start of the season.

If our players need an additional win bonus, then we have a bunch of wrong uns in the dressing room.

Ashton I read earned 720 grand the year we got promoted.I'm sure a nice big fat incentive for all involved.

They are professional footballers, who have a desire to win.

There will also be the small thing of promotion bonuses - based on 23/24, I suspect we'll be paying out £20-25M in bonuses if (when) we confirm promotion.

There won't be a single player in our team without a promotion bonus and a wage rise written into their contract.

Wasn't there an ex-player (Shane SUpple maybe?) who came out and said years after that there were players in the squad who didn't want to go up for this reason.

Football has changed now and i'm sure they pay increase in going up is worth it for these players alone (and a bonus) which is probably a lot more than it used to be.

£16.95m went to Ashton. Def info.

They will motivated.

Even if deep down players know they aren't good enough for the Prem, they will earn a promotion bonus/payrise if still under contract next season and it looks great on their CV.

My only potential gripe with that is where it applies to players who aren't involved in the squad, and have been loaned out (a bit like Ladapo in 23/24).

My understanding is that the potential of a promotion bonus and a PL salary increase deters these players from taking anything but a loan move, which then leaves us with players we don't need, drawing a PL wage.

Freddie earned his payday, wouldn't be where we are without him.

Yep, he mentioned that. To be honest I seem to remember him having some sort of romanticised vision of how a professional footballer should act.

Quite. He did that in the Cardiff game alone, let alone his League 1 goals.

And also, on the wider thread point, some players go through their whole career without a single promotion. Yes, it's a job but the chance of achieving anything, especially, is special in itself.

Sorry - my mistake. I had forgotten that he was in the squad for the first half of 23/24.

I'm sure there have been players, though, who've taken loans when, otherwise, they'd have been happy to be sold.
