| Ashton: "there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months" 12:46 - May 6 with 8409 views | Cheltenham_Blue | No; Not about that. Quizzed on whether promotion hastens the rebuild of the Cobbold Stand, a medium to long-term aim, Ashton added: “Over the next couple of months you will see numerous plans coming out for Portman Road and the areas around Portman Road. “We work really well with the council, they’ve been really supportive. Not only do we want to build a football club, we want to help regenerate this town. We’re passionate about that. “I’d say watch this space because I think there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months.” Not sure we've talked about this. Will it be plans for the Cobbold? Plans for the roof being popped off the West Stand and another tier being chucked on top? (Good God that will be high) As I suspect - The council starting work on the Aquatic Centre and the line of Portman Road being shifted? Or Something Else? [Post edited 6 May 12:47]

I assume that would've reduced the bar area/Planet Blue footprint at each end of the North Stand to put seating into the corners at that end, and Churchman's end, would've been where the scoreboard/pitch access is now positioned, as well as the control centre/TV studio above the tunnel?

You don't, but you also can't really replace the Cobbold without doing so for a season? ST only across the stadium for a season with those displaced moved into the 'match-day' seats?

Looking at the incredibly slow progress of Wrexham’s new stand doesn’t inspire any confidence that the new Cobbold will be in operation anytime soon. 2032/33 maybe? Unless… Gamechanger folks can ship over a team of Amish builders, in which case the new stand will be ready by next week.

When the North Stand was rebuilt, if I remember correctly, that there were ventilation shutters built into the stand that could be opened and closed to assist with ventilation in the maintenance and condition of the existing pitch. If I am correct, then that would potentially no longer be required, with the new pitch with undersoil heating being recently put in place. If this is the case, then the corners could potentially be considered for extra seating.

Unfortunately that progress would be slowed up by the planning department over here getting permission sorted.

| Ashton: "there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months" on 13:32 - May 6 by Illinoisblue | Another tier on top of West stand will be quite something. Better than having 3k or 4k fans with nowhere to go but won’t be much of a view from up there, surely? I still wonder if there’s a way to knock down half the Cobbold - leave enough room for away fans - and get on with building a new half, then knock down the away section and finish it off. The logistics and financing and uncertainty of what league we’ll be in, make this a complex project. Sooner we start the better. |
Churchman’s won’t be happy when the away fans eventually get housed there.

| Ashton: "there’ll be more things coming out over the next few months" on 13:41 - May 6 by hype313 | I imagine planning permission being submitted for one of the stands, or has recently been submitted. Would imagine they'll try and do what Liverpool did with the Cobbold, limits the impact of ST holders, which is why there was a big song and dance about securing the perimeter around it. |
I think the point of adding a tier to the West Stand it to house the Cobbold Stand season ticket holders whilst it is is demolished and re-built.

I'm with you, I find it utterly bizarre, are there that many kids into Swimming? My boys and all their friends learnt to swim, after that they had no interest. Seems like another Snoasis to me.

It strikes me as one of the sports that we look to target in the Olympics, so perhaps there's decent funding available for that sort of thing?

Not a 25m one - that's just a massive bag of really stupid half-arsed bollux.

Maybe one of them might want to put everything into it and excel at it? It's a pretty real and fundamental thing to do with your life. Or you could sit on your arse and play video games.

The aquatic centre has just had unanimous approval from the council so I guess that ship has sailed. Maybe Crown Pools is worth more closing and selling than refurbing?

That'd certainly make sense. Maybe I'm about 20 years behind the times, but that's a prime town centre site being used for a municipal use.

I get that the ship has sailed. Just seems that £38m (probably £50m by the time its completed) is a heck of a lot for a publicly funded pool. Crown Pools wont fetch much in terms of land value, and could have done a high level refurb for 10% of the cost of the new building. Not suggesting anything will change, was just unsure on the rationale.

The Aquatics Centre is going to have ships sailing on it? Just how big is it going to be?

Is there such a thing as a 'prime town centre' site in Ipswich?! 😉 Selling Crown Pools would fund very little of the new aquatics building.

The linked post says that was his AI vision of the remodelled Cobbold Stand, not the West Stand, so the dugouts would still be opposite.
