I wonder if we’ll look at Ramsdale if Saints don’t go up. Presumably Newcastle will be back in for Trafford so he won’t be an option.

| With Newcastle actively looking for a new Goalkeeper. on 19:09 - May 8 with 796 views | Churchman | On a free transfer yes. Fee? No. He’s no better than Walton. Ok so he’s an ‘name’. He also old and appears injury prone, but I’ve no stats to back up that impression. Just listened to the Bluemonday recent podcast and they ran through the stats. They and my failing memory tell me the strength of the team was defence, despite heart failure sometimes when they played out from defence. Walton was excellent and so were the rest of them. I’d leave it alone but add good quality CH and full back for squad depth. Individually and collectively they are far better than two years ago where defensive frailty was masked by a team that score goals for fun. This defence know where each other are now and that’s important. We don’t have time for the mud at the wall approach of the last PL season in my view. So for me, focus on the middle of the park and a couple of forwards, if we can find them. Maybe a right sided player, given I can’t see Burns staying, sadly. | | | |

Can't argue with that. Good points well made Sir.

I just can't see this point with the defence. Sunderland conceded less goals than us last season. They signed Mukiele, Alderete, Roefs, Renildo etc Burnley conceded less than us they signed terribly but still make significants moves to bolster the defence. Leeds conceded less goals than us they signed Bijol, Gudmundsson and Justin. Now I know there are more helpful stats than just GS but whilst we were pretty solid this season I don't think we were this incredible defensive unit like Burnley were last season that is ready to step up to the Prem. We need significant upgrades to our defence not just for squad depth but to make us better if we are to be competitive and I'm very confident the club will do that. [Post edited 8 May 19:33]

Not saying we should go for him, but 34 is fine for a goalkeeper, and he's certainly not past his best - he's a regular starter in a PL team.

Given we will likely be facing a lot of shots, Pope could be a good shout, and he is out of contract this summer.

I don't see his having the time on the ball to play out fro the back so much this season. Premier League press is ruthless so I think we'll go more direct this time around.

If he's a regular starter in the prem I reckon he'd be better than what we have. Id have him - even as a better number 2 than Palmer. it's an upgrade in a position.

No, not incredible but a long way better than two seasons ago as part of a new team getting to know each other. Good teams defend from the front. I know plenty hate our players or think they are a waste of space. I do not. Defence is about week in week out knowing each others’ game and having people in front to pass to and to cover. We have Matusiwa in front who I’d EPL standard all day long. It’s what is directly in front of him that worries me. That’s where the money needs to go in my view.

Always looking for players to come back. It’s almost always never as good 2nd time round, with a mere handful of exceptions.

I really like Jacob Greaves and don't think he is a waste of space at all but I equally think that is a position we should be looking to upgrade on and I think its very fair to say that. I agree we absolutely need to have a partnership in there but I think that partner for DOS isn't in the building yet and we will probably spend a large chunk on that person or not as you can sign players who are really good who don't cost a lot of money if you recruit smart and then they can develop a partnership together. There is plenty of money to spend we can improve the defence and the midfield and the attack. [Post edited 8 May 20:08]
