Reform’s candidate in the Bradford ward of Clayton & Fairweather Green, said he wanted to “blast [Muslims] all of the face of the earth [sic]”. Writing on Facebook in September 2024, he further described Muslims as “pure scum”, adding: “We’re being invaded by potential terrorists day in day out.” https://hopenothate.org.uk/202 On the 2nd May he told the local press he was no longer standing and wasn’t bothered as he had lots of other stuff to do. On 7th May he was elected as top candidate.

To be totally fair, that only really plays on the claim that they are all the same! Which is a position I definitely do not subscribe to.

These people are utter scum. Too many BNP types going through what must be an easier vetting process than becoming Ambassador to Washington. When people like Tice won’t publicly condemn these scumbags it gives them a green light to spout these abhorrent views. I hope the whole thing cones crashing down around them before any general election.

It does pose the question: is it ever justifiable to start using the dirty smearing tactics of the other side? The answer is no, morally, and that should be the end of it, but in the context of the low altitude engagement with information of a vast swathe of right- and left-swipers armed with a vote...

A little experiment in giving AI governance a go. If it all goes wrong the voters of Waveney only have themselves to blame.

Maybe if a councillor resigns within a certain time period following an election, the seat just goes to whoever finished second?

I think the approach should always be "be better". There are clearly bounds to this (the Gerrymandering going on in the US currently is a good example. If the Dems do not respond in kind then they risk being wiped out). I do not believe that posting unverified nonsense as fact passes that threshold though. It just serves to undermine real issues that do exist. [Post edited 12 May 8:50]

I actually don't think this is a terrible idea, but it would have drawbacks (people less likely to be sacked by their party if they were to lose their seat, and the invariable ethical issues that brings up). However, by-elections are not free.

I completely agree, and trust that at some point that approach will once again have intrinsic value to the electorate. Once we realise that we have to grow up again.

Only workable imo if the Aleternative Vote or Supplementary Vote (maybe STV?) systems are used. No need for another costly election just a costly re-count whereby first choice votes for the out-going councillor are re-apportioned according to second vote preferences.

They could help themselves if they weren’t churning out AI slop all the time!, but anyway glad to hear they haven’t invented a candidate. He does need an up to date photo though, he looks nothing like his photo now lol It’s important fake claims are debunked even if the damage will be done. There’s plenty of other stuff that’s more serious anyway like Farage continually not declaring donations and benefits, etc.
