That's a good question. I think Parrott has done well this season but has he been at Premier League level and how well does he fit the profile of who we want. Fleming has some Premier League experience but, again, how well does he fit the profile? I feel Lankshear is a Delap-type punt and I like that. I would love to have Delap back if that were possible too. But a lot don't want that. My problem is that I can't see who we can get that is what we need. The ideal would be someone from the above and some player who has been identified with everything we need but not really on anyone's radar (like how Matusiwa has been found). Ultimately, it is clear this is a priority area to improve but I don't hold high hopes that we can improve it enough.

| If we end the transfer window with... on 08:47 - May 16 with 1467 views | Len_Brennan | Definitely not. 1. Delap or Ferguson + 2. Parrott or Fleming or Lankshear + 3. Hirst or Azor would be ok, but I'd still worry about us from a goalscoring & fitness perspective. We have to have a #1 centre forward that we know can be effective both in our formation and at PL level. A very stringent medical will be necessary of course. Lankshear reminds me a bit of Flemming, in that he is a player that we already like & have enquired about, who looks like he has the game/ability to step up to PL level. Similarly, Parrott should be good enough, but he still has it all to prove. If Hirst or Azon are here come September, it can only be as 3rd (or 4th) choice centre forward. | |

Parrott has had a good season. However, i don't think the general quality in the dutch league is great Jozy altidore banged them in one year over there and was no where near good enough when he came to the prem so i'd be cautious when looking in the dutch league, i'm sure there have been others who have similar done well over there and dine nothing here

Alfonso Alves is the best example. Its a terrible standard in that league.

I was at the KC for his Hull debut against Bolton, where he scored the only goal. Hull fans singing USA! USA! was a surreal experience. He was only 19 and too much pressure was put on a young man a long way from home with the expectation of instant stardom on him... hmm...

I guess it's tough for a young lad with that level of expectation, however, when he returned to the uk, his spell at Sunderland was awful

Odd comment. The one think we haven't struggled to do this season is create chances - we have plenty of players already in the squad doing that. Our biggest weakness this season has been taking the chances often enough.

We currently don't have a 10 or a right winger who is Premier League quality in the building though, so his post isn't wrong. Neither is yours we do need a couple of strikers.

Well that’s what a recruitment team is paid for. You have to go and find someone like a Thierno Barry who was at Basel before he went to Villarreal 2 seasons ago. Villarreal paid 13M Euros for him before Everton paid 30M. We need to be a transfer ahead and find that kind of player from a club like Basel who would come straight to the PL. Thats what Sunderland were so good at last summer. [Post edited 16 May 14:28]

Not odd at all. Creating chances in Champ has nothing to do with creating in the prem, we created little in Prem last time in comparison. Of course depends on the other players to create chances. If you have wingers crossing into the box a lot we need a big striker who can head the ball well. If its more about trying to get into box and cut it back you need a different type of finisher.

Well, of course you can't assume chance creation in the Championship will translate into the PL - and we won't know until we see some playing at that level. However, you can't ignore that we were amongst the top for teams creating chances, McAteer was in the 95th percental for creating high volume, high quality chances for large chunks of the season, even before many recognised his potential, and (crucially) we were at the top for missed big opportunities. It come down more to composure in front of goal, than chances created imo. We clearly have players who make the opportunities, and this may or may not translate into the same in the PL. Since very few of the attacking players in the team were in the PL with us last time, or played few games, that's not a suitable comparison. Jaden and Wes out for much of the season, Jack playing most but all the others no longer with us. We'll not know for sure until the season starts, but IMO we have players who will create in the PL. Of course we need more, but being clinical in front of goal is key to our survival. Without a doubt, less clearcut chances are created in the PL by any team.

It's the Dutch league bit that bothers me... Been there recently haven't we. Give me Delap over him and I'd be happy with those 3

We can't answer the profile question you pose unless we know for sure exactly what the profile is. I'd certainly be happy wih ZF as one of the main two, not sure about TP, and GH not what I'd be looking for at no 3. I'd imagine top of the list is a striker who ticks the PL boxes of Physique, pace, power, and of course an ability to stick the ball in the net on a reasonably regular basis. That has the sound of someone that " doesn't come cheap ". But we're in with the big boys now, have to play big boy games. So I guess my answer to your question if I was pressed for one would be at least a partial no.
| If we end the transfer window with... on 18:48 - May 16 with 444 views | RobTheMonk | It wouldn't be my first choice. I actually quite like Flemming though. The Dutch league is funny. You get the odd me mercurial talent who looks world class, but then there's a realisation that anything bottom half of Eredivisie is around League 1 level. I do like Kees Smit though, but think he'll go on to bigger things. And as much as this pains me, I think it's time to part way with Hirst. | | | |
