| Southampton lose their appeal. on 22:15 - May 20 by Ryorry | They've still got to do the same amount of fitness and on-the-ball work. I'm not a football coach though, do they really need more than 2 days to work on formation and tactics to deal with team B rather than team A? Wouldn't their manager/coaches have already drawn up both a plan A and a plan B? I'd bet my house that KM would have done! |
Of course but it's very different having to split your preparation between two teams as opposed to focusing on one in the same period of time.

| Southampton lose their appeal. on 22:02 - May 20 by Ryorry | Hull are a near elite level professional football club, not a year 6 school team being coached by a stand-in history teacher because the sports coach is on long-term sick. Saying that they're not up to coping with not knowing which of two teams in the same league, both of whom they'd already played twice this season, they'll be playing in 2.5 days time seems rather insulting to me. |

They would having been focusing more on Southampton as well. I don't think he understands that teams would have an entire tactical plan and preparation based on an opponent. Literally for a week and now have to pivot in just a couple days. That's rather an important aspect of the game, so much so that some teams apparently try and spy on others! ;)

How often in a Championship season are there 2 games in a week? Seemingly all the time. Are they unable to prepare for those games or do they do a bit of tactical work in the lead up to those games? 6 games in 17 days or something for us wasn't it? 5 of them away from home. If we missed out on automatics because of that would it have been deeply unfair? Hull have had longer to prepare for both eventualities and would have been negligent if they hadn't. Don't get me wrong, I do have sympathy for the Hull argument but this is the only fair way to deal with it imo. I know it hasn't ended up affecting us but it could well have done and this is what we would have deemed a fair outcome. Is teams break rules playing ineligible players in cup games their opponents are reinstated in to the competition so there is precedent here. The correct official ruling would potentially have Southampton forfeit the tie 3-0 before a ball was kicked.

any non-tinpot club would have prepared for both likely eventualities. it would be a massive dereliction of duty to just assume soton would get away with a clear and admitted breach of rules!

It’s the PLAYOFF FINAL. When you have two games in a week you know both of those opponents a long time in advance and plan accordingly. Jesus! [Post edited 21 May 2:09]

Totally agree. People have been overplaying this 'ooh we don't know who we're playing, how can we possibly prepare?' whine. I imagine they'll be concentrating on their own game, and then doing bits and bobs on the threats of both possible opponents. Not ideal but not the disaster some are making out. Some people seem to think training sessions are solely about the opposition!

when you know that the winning team has breached the rules at the expense of the losing team (and admitted it!), then you plan accordingly if you have half a brain!

Your football IQ is very low I’m afraid. The idea that some clubs have two games a week is one of the most ridiculously arguments I’ve ever heard btw, the fixtures come out in June or cup draws or made in advance. In this tournament they would have had ten days to prepare not 2/3 Bits and bobs? Lmao laughable

Still testy while calling others testy? Still no explanation of how it's fairer to give Hull a bye to £200m and Prem status (a team who weren't involved in spygate) than reinstating Boro. I also didn't make the argument about clubs having two games a week. I won't make a comment on your intelligence/IQ.

Yep. Not sure people realise quite how much prep goes in to preparing for opposition teams. Hours upon hours of work on the grass and indoors watching video etc. It would have been borderline impossible for Hull to do as much prep as they wanted to on 2 different teams. Simply not possible. I would bet pretty confidently that if we were in this position McKenna would be fuming for that very reason given how much work they do preparing for opponents and our fans would (rightly) be in agreement with him.

how were poor millwall supposed to cope with the uncertainty of having to play any one of 5(five) different playoff opponents for their semi-final with just 6 days notice?! 5 days is plenty of time to focus on boro, especially as it's been a very strong possibility for nearly 2 weeks since soton admitted to cheating

soton shouldn't have cheated. it's a very minor disadvantage compared with millwall's and it isn't boro's fault (who have had massve disadvantages to their preparation with all the emotional energy expended on the trials and uncertainty)

Absolutely they shouldnt have cheated. Obviously it isn't Boros fault. It also isn't fair on Hull who have been preparing for a different game when they should have had 10 days to focus on 1.

what's your solution then? it's massively unfair on boro to be cheated out of the semi-final then having 5 days of uncertainty and mental and emotional exertion followed by 5 days to prepare for hull. hull have had 10 days to train for the possibility of playing boro and soton and they'll have used that
