The Championship next season ... 22:03 - May 20 with 2383 viewsBellevue_Blue

Firstly, thank goodness we are not in it.

Secondly, In terms of narrative, the top of the division is going to be up there with the most competitive it has ever been in terms of quality and spending.

Wolves, Burnley & West Ham/ Spurs will have some of the best squads ever assembled in the division.

Millwall/ Southampton/ the loser of the PO and a better Shef United should have more than enough quality to trouble the top 6.

Wrexham and Birmingham will throw their cash around this summer and will surely be up there in the top half this season.

And that's not accounting for any real progression from the likes of Derby/ Swansea/ WBA all who have shown signs the back end of this year.

Norwich will finish 13th again .. nothing interesting there.

Then there are the rivalries ...

West Ham vs Millwall
West Brom vs Wolves
Cardiff vs Swansea
Pompy vs Soton
Burnley vs Blackburn

How nice to be an interested spectator again...

I heard a whisper that Birmingham might have issues with the financial regs.

It will be very tight! I would have been worried if we had missed out this season.

unless burnley mess up their manager choice, i can see it being a more dominant top 3.

don't think there's any more parachute teams except soton, who will likely be forced into another managerial change, and more chaos (as well as a points deduction with the possibility of more to follow)

I would not be at all surprised.

I keep thinking the same of Wrexham, but then I remember the Disney cash they must have coming in.

Neither would I , yes, we beat them twice, but they have one or two above average players now, if they can add to that they will be competing.

I agree. I’m glad we’re not in it next season but I really think the Championship is the best league in the world in terms of entertainment and good competitive matches so I will be following it with interest.

If the last two seasons are anything to go by then Wolves, Burnley and West Ham/Spurs will not have it easy.

Forget midday kick offs, the West Ham v Millwall, Millwall v West Ham games will have to be played at 8 o clock in the morning.

1 or 2 above average players? Means they have 9 or 10 average players or below, they don't look great when playing against the leagues top sides

For relegation? It’s possible, but I think they might just scrape in at around 18th.

Agreed, if we're being honest, it is as strong next season as it was weak this season and thank God it was or we wouldn't have got automatic promotion* and that does look tough!

* that being said, there was a real argument that what the 26 side had gained in quality they had lost in character compared to the 24 side, I would have shared that sentiment for a lot of the season but i thought the squad showed real character, bottle, professionalism and resolve in the very difficult run in the last part of the season.

I'd imagine Millwall's best players will be picked off over the summer?

Southampton will have a new manager and significant sales too. Same with West Ham (assuming it's them down)

Burnley could be in a similar position. They are losing huge amounts of money and have Private Equity investors to satisfy.

"Millwall/ Southampton/ the loser of the PO and a better Shef United should have more than enough quality to trouble the top 6"

*Top 8 next season

Should keep a few more teams interested for longer

Agree it'll be a tough league next year, but i'd imagine a fair few fans of other teams thought the same going into this year. What with big spenders coming up from lg1, us and Southampton throwing considerable money around, Sheff utd still with parachute payments, Leicester still having a squad with a lot of prem experience. Coventry improving year on year etc

The Welcome to Wrexham TV programme brings very little actual cash to the club. It is owned by a separate company run by Ryan Reynolds and his mate.

What it does bring to the club is a good fee for the access and a world wide fan base. If you have ever watched it it is so dumbed down aiming at those who knew little about football.

As this season drew towards a conclusion I had the feeling that staying in the PL next season will be easier than getting out of the Championship. In other words we had to go up now. Had we missed out and then failed to gain promotion next season we would be out of parachute payments.

And for what it’s worth I think Millwall will be in the relegation mix next season - this was their shot at glory and they had to take it.

On paper, this all makes perfect sense. And maybe, with the continuing influx of money into the English game, the Championship does improve every year.

But the refrain that the forthcoming season will be even harder because of those coming down is heard every year. It was said of the likes of Leicester 12 months ago. Leicester are now in league one, and Southampton couldn't do better than 4th, having cheated.

The side that ran away with it was one that had been building step by step.

It's hard to know what any of this means for overall quality, but it's fairly likely that at least one of those coming down will disappoint.

Norwich finished 9th. Unfortunately. And clearly they were hampered by their ludicrous start. With 8th place making the playoffs next season, I would very much expect them to be part of the promotion race.

Correct. At least some of those teams will underperform next season.

If we get our recruitment right this time we have such a good chance of staying up.

We are capable of finishing above Coventry, Hull or Boro.

It's just getting past another team that's the issue!
