When did days out get so expensive?! 08:10 - May 26 with 5770 viewsZx1988

We're over in the West Country with Mrs Zx's family for a short break. Since when did everything become so eye-wateringly expensive?

Wells Cathedral - £15
Cheddar Gorge & Caves - £27
Wookey Hole - £30
Bath Baths - £33

I had in my head that £20 was probably the cost of a day out at a decent attraction. I get that prices have increased, but by so much? Surely there's a greed premium being tacked on on top of the increased operating costs, hoping that owners will be able to get away with laying it all at the Government's door?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

At least if they put Spoons in charge of heritage they'd make it financially accessible to all

Exactly!

I bet they’d sell the Tunnocks Teacakes on a meal deal.

Alton Water have set up a water park so a cheap family visit on a hot day - or it would be if it wasn't £20 per hour ffs.

Constable Park in Brantham do kayaking etc., and that's £18 per hour.

Maybe, but you'd spend half the day out getting to the toilets.

Of course those running these things will want to make a profit, nobody is working for free (a few volunteers excluded of course).

Ancient buildings and geographical spots can also cost a fortune to maintain.

But government does have a hand in this too. Making employment more expensive via taxes and regs. Foolish.

Welcome to a Scandinavian socialist country. This offers better public services but taxes are much higher. I don't necessarily have an issue with that & Britain should decide if it wants to go that way or else cut spending more. But usually people don't vote for higher taxes.

Honestly guys, gals and all - there comes a time when you can't go out at all. Either save up & enjoy it when you can, or take to the hills for free - public footpaths, bridleways, country lanes and lakes cost nothing to meander along, some are ok for wheelchair users; there'll be pubs to visit for the price of a pint (yeah I know), and you'll probably meet some lovely people + their dogs too.

+1 for making the most of the countryside. So many lovely views to be had, and it's decent exercise getting there/back.

Was planning on being in the Malvern hills this week but the heat put me off - hopefully get there soon enough once the temps are back to normal.

Good to remember this, there are still plenty of free options if we're able to put in a bit of effort and planning, instead of insisting on fun and attractions organised by someone else.

We still have free/subsidised museums too.

If historical sites like Sutton Hoo/stately homes interest you then I definitely recommend National Trust membership. Will save you a fortune if you/your family visit even just two or three sites across the year. Am sure National Heritage offers similar for what they manage.

Historic England, formerly English Heritage, manage or advise on listed properties. A mate of mine is a member of Moor Park GC & its clubhouse is a Grade 1 listed Palladian mansion. The club had to renovate a wall & the guys from Historic England came down & inspected their work. The club had used the correct traditional material for the bricks, but then they were asked how they had been made. "By machine" was the answer. The Historic England guys out on long faces, tut-tutted & said "Oh dear, that's all going to have to come down & rebuilt using bricks made by hand".

We find Geocaching to be a really good way of exploring places.

There's a 20-stop 'Tour of Bath' multi-cache, which contains all the main sights and has a good amount of information as well. Just a shame we decided to walk around a stone city in 35c heat!

Places like Thorpe Park are nearly £70 for an adult now if you buy on the day.

So for a family of 4 nearly £280 for a day. Without any fast track passes etc.

Yes, there are hacks to get them cheaper but it is mad now. And the parks here are SO poor.

In 2023 we had a day pass to Disneyland Florida. It was £125 each plus £30 each for the coach there and back. It also turned out to be the Spring break so absolutely heaving. Never got on one ride. Spent quite a few dollars getting souvenirs. Had an ice cream which even though we got in a shaded spot managed to run up my arms.
On first getting into the park we decided to get a Coke. Fortunately the lady that served me said "We don't take cash" and got me two cokes for free.
The one thing that really struck me was how immaculately tidy the park was. No rubbish anywhere.

Luckily we went to Florida & DisneyWorld in October half term, when the weather wasn't too hot & none of the Americans were on break so the parks were half empty.

If that's your bag... you're better off getting the Merlin annual passes. If you visit 2 or 3 times, or a couple or so of the attractions, you can save a lot.

We had them for a few years when the boys were younger, and made the most of it - doing 2 or 3 days at Alton Towers, including the waterpark, staying in Premier Inn/Travelodge. Doing Madame Tussaud's, London Eye and London SeaLife, Dungeons etc over a weekend, Legoland, Blackpool Tower

I should also recommend https://www.treasuretrails.co. which we used a lot as a family when visiting UK locations. Whilst it's slightly geared towards kids and our are now grown, the wife and I still use them to give us a route and a purpose when exploring somewhere. Gets you to notice interesting details about a place you might have otherwise missed.

£10 a time for a couple of hours activity and if you complete the clues you can enter a prize draw.

These are absolutely brilliant. We used them a fair few times for Ned junior when he was between 8 - 11. Really good way of exploring somewhere new and seeing things you'd normally walk straight past

Geocaching was the secret to getting the kids out on walks or mountain bikes - would go for hours. Ice cream and drink made it a great day out.
