Can anyone find the permission notice? There’s usually artist impressions on them and stuff isn’t there?

I imagine this is stage one of getting to that? Bringing the bottom of the stand outwards thus strengthening the foundations etc so something could be added on top.

They're essentially more than doubling the depth of the concourse, looking at where the stairs are. And then moving all bars to the new side, and making the existing space into toilets. Very minor detail, but hope they're going to be considerate about the named bricks on the floor out the back of the West Stand.

Sounds like a sensible set of changes before we add capacity. At the moment it is too congested around the back of the north especially. They certainly want to fix this before adding another 4k on the capacity.

Not enough people go the Constantine road route to get to their seats either. Once they get people using all entrances it will much better from a logistics point of view.

They have hopefully thought about the bricks, but it might be worth getting in touch just in case.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

All seems very sensible which has been the case with all of the building works carried out since the new owners came in. It’s a real bonus that the facilities can be used during events on the practise pitch, opening the area up to more events / making the club more money during those events.

Noticed they’ve just got the Suffolk punch symbol above the new gate onto SAR way, think it’s been included in this form on the new training ground as well, which I’m not against at all, just hope they don’t try and change the badge to just the Suffolk punch in the future.

All in all, really good to see the continued investment in the club

To increase capacity of the stand by 4,000 you would need to add around 12 extra rows. Which, looking at the planning application seems to be what is going to happen. The new roof will presumably be similar to North/ South stands.

Hopefully no obstructed views.

You’d think as time goes on RV will be a thing of the past in football, especially as it impacts on revenue potentially.

I'm trying to get my head round where the turnstiles will be. To access the West Stand will we now need to go through one set of turnstiles into the fan zone and then another set to get into the new concourse and the stand itself?

No colour; all that open space with just a couple of portacabins serving food? I know all that stuff doesn’t need planning permission, but at least jazz up the drawings!

As I said, hope it's the pie and a pint stand and not the Pie and Ear. It would have been in the 70's.

Where are you seeing plans for a North/South Stand-style roof in the planning application? There's no mention of 12 additional rows of seating from what I can see?

Yes, as per the Design & Access Statement: "There is a tremendous time pressure on the development of the West Stand, and with this in mind the construction approach will look to incorporate a sustainable approach where possible.
The skeleton of the extension will be a concrete foundation, a brickwork plinth
and a steel frame. Whilst these initial works are underway, the timber infill of the
Kiosks, Catering, Briefing Room and Ticket Office can be constructed off-site. This
approach allows works to run in parallel but also minimises waste and improves
resource efficiency, aiming to reduce construction waste of these items by 70-
90%. The off-site approach also reduces the number of deliveries to site, reducing
transports emissions and local community disruption."

As I wrote on the story comments:

As someone who teaches Landscape Architecture at UCL, I agree it's stupid and annoying that the whole of the practice pitch area appears to become hard surface. This is only not great from an aesthetic standpoint, but a very simple and cheap strategy could easily include trees for shelter, grass for kids, SUDs and level changes to avoid huge runoff in heavy rains.

North Stand and South Stand roofs are entirely different though.

I think the fanzone area will be open to the public with no turnstile access required. Interesting to see how that will work as the fanzone gets pretty packed with ticket holders.

It is remaining a practice pitch looking at other photos in the planning permission. Just the aerial photos are brown.

There is an interesting use of language in the planning application.

"Expansion of the existing West Stand at Portman Road (Ipswich Town Football Club). Expansion to include the extension of the stand at ground floor level to allow for a larger concourse and relocated Kiosks. Fanzone adjacent to be refurbished to provide more parking provision and a better threshold to the stand."

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it suggests that this is a series of applications for the West Stand Expansion. I assume this is phase one, to be done this summer, followed by the increase in capacity to add the required number of seats next summer.

I guess a big profile change of the existing elevation will take more time through planning than this would, so we have split it into phases.

If so, that would be great and will definitely help reduce the congestion on the road outside. Will also be interesting to see if they allow any away fans in - personally I would have no issue with that and enjoy chatting with opposition fans before a game but can imagine that there would be some concerns

A monitored bicycle park (maybe in that triangular bit) would be a good addition.
