| Trippier to Wolves on 13:55 - May 29 with 2591 views | Axeldalai_lama | ... Just goes to show that just maybe the average punter on here has no clue about the inner workings of football, relative standard of players, what they'll bring or won't, what contracts they'll want, whether they're fit enough and a million other details. Clearly there was no one else interested or he'd have waited longer than this, or it's such a ridiculous deal it would have made no sense for any other club to counter. And yet if he does well, or if anyone we 'miss out on' does well it will be brought up ad infinitum on here as an ever so clever 'told you so'. | | | |
| Trippier to Wolves on 14:09 - May 29 with 2413 views | franz_tyson | There does seem to be a real obsession to get in a mid to late 30's veteran in. Is it only because of Xhaka? For every Xhaka........ aren't most of these types just going to get 5-10 games a season and then maybe captain a League Cup game? I hear so much about how these types of players are essential to the dressing room with their experience.... but why not bring in newly retired players as coaches? I know we've had Keogh, Aluko and Young as senior, senior players but all of them were really non-existent on the field. Aluko had chops.... but he really was a showpony who didn't contribute much apart from baller skills. Keogh and Young looked ready for the knackers yard. If there's a 32-33 year old with good fitness, top level skills and still got the desire who'd fit in here.... then great.. but seeing so many trying to find the new Xhaka as if it's now necessary for survival. I'm just not convinced. | | | |

The seasons we had those individuals were the ones where we got promoted. Correlation or coincidence? Hard to tell with the information we fans have. But it is small margins which determine success.

phillips was our prem version, maybe that one would have gone better but for a dodgy red card and injuries at exactly the wrong time?

I fancy them to do really well, top 2 I think. They've got a bit of continuity off the pitch in Edwards, he knows the Championship and has done well there previously at both Luton and Boro. They'll build a really good squad for that level and I can see Molineux being a really tough place to go, their fans have been starved of something to shout about for a while and they'll relish it if they start strong. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It really wouldn’t have. We took a desperate punt on a big name signing, but he was always off the pace. Even at his fittest, not that he was ever that fit, he was half a yard short. His previous loaned to West Ham? Wiki says after a thrashing by Palace in April: ‘The following day, it was reported in the media that West Ham's coaches were "shocked" at Phillips's poor performances during games and attitude during training, opining that he had seemingly "lost interest in playing Premier League football". He was and is washed up. Trippier? When I’ve seen him playing for Newcastle in the past year or so, he’s looked like he’s wearing lead boots and along way from where he used to be. Wolves are welcome to him.

Planning? Perhaps with their Premier League wealth they should have done that two or three years ago. They’ve been a shambles/ garbage for a while now. Just because, like West Bam, they carry a big, famous name doesn’t make them any good. Unlike West Ham their points total was at pitiful levels. But I don’t think they or WHU find it at all easy in the ham and egg league.

Presumably it's because the data modelling all clubs and international teams (well, England at least) are doing are suggesting it's the most effective structure. Getting one that fits and works as well beyond the database as Xhaka has is the challenge.

| Trippier to Wolves on 04:10 - May 30 with 917 views | itfcsuth | Would have liked Trippier, think he would have been a great addition. You need to add experience to your dressing room, for me it’s a must, and think he still had a lot to offer for somebody like us. Still played 30+ games last season, including a substantial amount in the Champions League. Would presume on this one, at his age, he may not be looking to move so far down south though. | | | |

How can you data model 'influence in the changing room' or 'experience on the park.' I'm getting left behind. Algorithms getting too good, bro.

You can hypothetically use any attributes you wish and model any scenario you want to use. You just need the cool kids to press the buttons.

Is there any modelling, algorithms etc that can identify hunger, desire, work ethic, professionalism, team orientation (bullsht bingo term - apols) in sport? I ask because the world and what can be done is changing so fast and I’m genuinely interested.

I genuinely don't know but as many of those are transient dependent on environmental context, I imagine they're difficult. I'm no expert but some of the team type attributes and motivations etc are available in existing psychometric work so it's only a sport application of those. Somebody, somewhere will be doing it!

| Trippier to Wolves on 08:23 - May 30 with 649 views | Nutkins_Return | Trippier was brilliant when Newcastle signed him and it's a decent signing for Wolves but his legs were gone from a prem perspective. His pace is non existent and it had become really problematic at the top level. Right call for him in my opinion. He still has a lot to offer but it's a weakness teams would go after in the prem. If you are having most of the ball much less so as he's still brilliant on the ball. | |

You definitely do need a Xhaka type of player though. We clearly went down that route with Phillips, but it was a disaster from the start and I said at the time, the fact that a 33 year old Morsy who’d never stepped foot in the Prem was keeping him out of the team, well, just sums it up. Xhaka has been excellent this season, and probably not only helped them on the pitch but off it as well with his experience. It was probably a right place, right time signing given his time at Levekusen - by god I hope we can pick someone up this summer who will have a similar impact.

I don't think Phillips was really that. He didn't fit the experienced senior pro model - not old enough nor with sufficient good Prem seasons under his belt - but instead was more a punt on someone trying to rebuild his career after a difficult spell. Too busy working on himself to teach others. We lacked someone with the real mentoring gravitas of a Keogh, Sonko or Young in 2024-25 and perhaps it showed.
